This idea is amazing, some I find a little over the top but still awesome.
Thought I bet the majority of these people will still craft these items at a workbench.
Some of these ideas I like, others seem not needed. I'll give a brief overview and opinion of each.
Knife - I like this one. Mainly due to the fact you throw it. Sometimes when cave exploring, you get stuck in really bad positions involving creepers and the like, and this would be useful in those situations. This would be really helpful early in the game before you have the resources to craft bow and arrows.
Sling Shot / Stone Bullets - Although I like your creativity on this one, I just don't see much use for it. The knives mentioned above should hold us over until we get fully prepared.
Trowel / Hand Pick / Hatchet - I wouldn't be opposed to these, but, since it's not critical to survival, I'm not sure if they're really needed. Making a crafting bench is easy enough, and any MineCraft Vet knows to carry enough wood for back-up.
Boomerang - This one I'm definitely in favor of. Infact, I've suggested it myself before. I think what it should do is momentarily stun the enemy, but not hurt them. Then you can hit them. Be very useful for creepers.
Directional Markers - Another one I'm definitely in favor of. Your idea seems like it'd require a map. But, I had the idea of making the markers appear on the compass. Obviously you couldn't use red, but all other colors are available. I'm using a mini-map mod now that has a feature like this, and I must say, it really makes a world of difference. How it'd work, and how to craft it exactly is up to debate, but I'd like to see it get implemented some way or another.
Powder Bomb / Dynamite - A griefer's wet dream come true, eh? I'm neutral on this. Don't care one way or the other. I rarely use TNT anyway.
Small Shields - Same thing with the small tools, I'm just not sure they're needed.
Full Shields - I'm in favor of this. This would be useful against skeletons. I'm sure we've all been stuck in those situations with no food, and only one heart. It's inevitable that you die if a Skeleton catches you. This will allow the good players to survive.
Torch Arrows - I'm torn on this one. Although I see it's uses, it may be easily abused. Placing the torches manually is kinda what makes the game challenging. This is another one I'm neutral one.
Glow Stone Arrows - This one I have a easier time getting behind because glow-stone is hard to come by, making it more difficult to abuse.
(Gravel) Flint - I'm down with this. Gravel is pretty useless atm, so it'd be nice to get atleast some use out of the excess amounts of it.
(Sapling) Sticks - Eh, not needed. I agree saplings build up quick, but not really enough to make a recipe for them.
(Stick) Wood Plank - You'll end up using sticks one way or the other. If it gets put in fine, if not fine.
Leaf Graft / Topiary Blocks - I think you should just stick with the second option. That way you can use these freely to create bushes and the like. Considering leaves are one of the only things you can't craft/move, I'm in favor of this.
Portable Grill - This one is creative. Being able to cook meat on the fly would be very beneficial to your survival.
Satchel - I'd like for some kind of inventory expansion to get added, but if it doesn't, I won't lose sleep over it. With proper item management, you already have enough space. I actually fear that Notch might consider going the opposite direction making it smaller.
Bow Drill - Totally not needed. 1 piece of iron and 1 piece of flint make a lighter, can't get easier than that. Both of those are abundant enough to have within the first day.
Glow Stone Sand - I don't know how I feel about the "Sand" part of the name, but I like the concept behind it. The way GlowStone is set up now is pretty brutal. You better be damn sure you want it in that exact spot. Your idea actually allows for it to be useful though, I can see many uses for temporary underwater exploration.
Small Ore Blocks - Another one just not really needed. If you only have a few ores, space shouldn't be an issue anyway. Very rarely do you collect more than 64 of one particular ore in one setting. The rest can be stored accordingly.
Coal Blocks - I like this idea minus the small size. I think you should be able to make coal blocks just like the ores for storage. The minecart idea is nice though, I could get behind that.
I made this for the inventory screen using this stuff. I think this will be the best way to do it IMO
that's cute, but now show the full inventory and how the crafting grid looks next to it. (because I tried it that way and it looks terrible, since everything is all squeezed in sideways)
And why do you have a spot for the satchel? that's not how they're used.

I appreciate the detailed response, but one thing I notice you missing is that you go "any veteran knows that you use X method to accomplish Y" and the point of many of these is to give people OTHER options. Options lead to strategy. It's that mental side of things and the ability to mix it up that keep a sandbox game like this from getting dull.
I'm in the middle of reading through modding tutorials and figuring out where to go to actually be able to browse through minecraft's code, so yes, things are beginning to move in that direction.
Bit late to the party, but: instead of crafting ammunition separately, just add the block of Gravel to the recipe, and have it not need any additional ammunition (you're essentially crafting the little rocks it throws, right into the sling itself).
You would then also have the option to make a sling with an ingot of Gold, instead - for enhanced damage. (Gold having properties similar to Lead, and pre-shaped Lead bullets being better than just well-chosen stones.)
Not only is that idea completely ridiculous (what, the gravel just magically regenerates itself?) [...]
One rather assumed the Sling would then be given, oh I don't know ... durability, like other tools?
[...] but the idea of having a sling with enhanced damage is completely ridiculous. If you want enhanced damage, make a BOW.
In fact, why don't you think at all, before coming down so hard on someone who was supporting your ideas? Yes, past tense on that is entirely intentional. My patience is worn quite thin this week already.

Here; talk to this guy, instead. You might get further with him:
now that there are fish, I think there's a way to craft it. Even though it doesn't logically make sense that fish turn into scuba gear, I figure you could craft a helmet or armor and then surround that with 8 fish to make a scuba suit.
because seriously, having to come up for air all the time when you're undertaking a massive underwater endeavor (like draining a 300x300 block area of ocean) is downright annoying.
Umm see this is the sort of thing that belongs in Mapping and Modding!
I would really like to see these in there, not only are these amazing ideas but getting these in mine craft is easier than bugging notch to create it. Instead... try asking requesting this mod from some REALLY good modders such as

Think about it.[/quote]1) you got the numbers wrong. Bow does 2 damage, sling does 1, fist does .5
2) It's a SLING. Ranged combat. It's one thing for a sword or melee weapon to have increased damage since the fewer hits you need = reduce the HIGH likelihood of getting hit yourself, but it doesn't matter how much damage you do when it's from a distance. It's 10 hits to kill a mob with the sling vs 5 hits with a bow, so 1.5 damage would kill the enemy in 7, but does it really make that much difference when you're just chucking half a piece of gravel? Are you seriously going to say that 5 pieces of gravel are worth even a single piece of gold, just so that you can kill an enemy 3 shots sooner even though you should be outside of imminent danger while using it?
The WHOLE ENTIRE point of the sling is to be an "it'll do" weapon so you can have half a chance against the spiders that you need to kill in order to gather the rest of the string you need to make a bow (and also to deal with the occasional skeleton along the way. Also possibly so you have a way to chuck snowballs, powderbombs, eggs, and slimeballs, though I don't think I've updated the main post to reflect that yet, probably will do that when I rerun the Classics poll.
In fact, why don't you think at all, before coming down so hard on someone who was supporting your ideas? Yes, past tense on that is entirely intentional. My patience is worn quite thin this week already.

I... honestly don't care. I mean seriously, I came down hard on your ideas, deal with it. You didn't really think your idea through for how it fit with minecraft, or how it fit the purpose that the item served in the context of minecraft. I don't pander to ideas just because someone claims to like mine. Saying that you "used to be" a fan of the project either means that you never really were a fan, or that you're just a whiny *****(I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and chalk the whiny ***** part up to whatever this rough week you're alluding to is)

Why are you assuming I'd only give the sling two shots, if it were crafted with a block of gravel to begin with?
Have you ever actually used a sling in real life, by the way? Only two shots per cubic meter of gravel is pitiful. 50 or 100 would be more like it.
I mean seriously, I came down hard on your ideas, deal with it.
I mean seriously, I made a small suggestion for an alternate way your unique-and-special-snowflake idea might work, deal with it.
Saying that you "used to be" a fan of the project either means that you never really were a fan, or that you're just a whiny *****
Actually, it's that I simply don't support any effort or idea that originates from self-centered pricks. Into which category, you've now very firmly placed yourself.
Why would you assume the Bow will never have a durability stat, all it's own?
Because I don't base the ability for an idea to work on something that is outside of the scope of that idea. If the bow does get a durability (which i actually think it should) then the sling would also get one, but the idea should be balanced REGARDLESS of that. Even if the bow DID have durability, you wouldn't just craft it with some flint and sticks and when the bow runs out of durability you run out of arrows too. It makes no sense.
Why are you assuming I'd only give the sling two shots, if it were crafted with a block of gravel to begin with?
Lolworthy. You're the one assuming that I'M making the stupid assumptions. I never said anything about the sling only having 2 shots, because after dismissing the idea of a sling being premade with ammo (or as you clarified; having the ammo run out as part of its durability, which is already covered by the knives being throwable) I had no reason to touch back on that subject. When I said half a piece of gravel, that was PER SHOT (1 gravel crafts 2 bullets, hence 1/2 gravel per shot)
Have you ever actually used a sling in real life, by the way? Only two shots per cubic meter of gravel is pitiful. 50 or 100 would be more like it.
sure, there might be 50-100 stones in a meter wide block of gravel, but that doesn't mean every stone is weighted properly to be thrown accurately and able to do more damage than just punching a guy in the face (especially when your punches can break meter thick pieces of wood, stone, and iron, since you apparently want to use realism for your argument)
There's also an issue of game balance. Chickens and zombies give you feathers (renewable) trees give you sticks (renewable) so the only part of an arrow that actually costs is gravel for the flint. 1 gravel can be mined for 1 flint which can be used to craft 4 arrows = 8 damage, therefor in the case of going gravel to 2 bullets, each does 1 damage, so the easier and less expensive use of gravel as ammunition for sling only provides 2 damage per gravel. Hence arrows are still clearly superior despite the extra effort needed to gather the flint from the gravel. (do not underestimate how significant a role the amount of effort an item requires plays in determining the perceived cost a player associates with making it)
I mean seriously, I made a small suggestion for an alternate way your unique-and-special-snowflake idea might work, deal with it.
Wow whats with ll the arguing, I am intrigued by this idea but would like it more, of course, if it were an actual mod, if it is and i missed the download link I apologize. Anyway I like all of your ideas, every single tool made sense too me and i liked them. I read the whole post and think that it looks very well balance and if any issues came up I'm sure you would tweak them.
I'm surprised too see people throwing insults and arguing about such a well thought out idea I mean did someone really say their sling should get 100 shots from one piece of gravel, that'ed be game breaking.
Anyway I hope to see this one day become a mod I might even stop using all my other mods and give vanilla + this mod a try cause that sounds fun especially if I look no further at your recipes.

You compared the number of shots with a sling using Gravel, to kill a creature (10), to what a 50% increase would produce (7). Then you asked if I thought 1 ingot of gold (a 7-shot kill) was worth 5 blocks of gravel (a 10-shot kill). So you were assuming, at the very least, that the ingot of gold would give you only seven shots. If it gave you, say, thirty-five shots? 5 creatures killed ... 50 blocks of gravel, by your two-shots-per-block math. Or just under two blocks (and two string, and two leather), if a 20-use durability was assigned to the Gravel Block version I brought up.

Ayup, you clearly haven't used a sling for real. Nor seen what a 1mx1mx1m cube of gravel entails, in terms of rocks suitable to do tremendous damage as sling bullets.
Like the effort of attacking twice as many times?
Frankly, with that sort of return on the gravel ... I'd never use a sling. It'd be useless to me. Give me 10 or 15 shots (and durability, so that the ultimate cost is not just the block of gravel, but also the string and the cowhide), and I'd consider it.

Frankly, with that sort of return on the gravel ... I'd never use a sling. It'd be useless to me. Give me 10 or 15 shots (and durability, so that the ultimate cost is not just the block of gravel, but also the string and the cowhide), and I'd consider it.
Being a pissant, is not "dealing with it".
Hey, look at that, it's an idiot who thinks he's clever.
I know it is an example, but this looks like it was made in MsPaint in 10 seconds. How about this?
Erm, well, blurring effects definitely doesn't work with 16-bit, but it looks prettier than that spray-can tool spam you did with MsPaint. I love Paint.NET. =D
I think it was meant to be lightstone. not sure thou
