I know many people have already posted topics concering minecarts but i wanted to list a comprehensive list of what i feel should be changed.
Some of these ideas i have gotten from other peoples threads, so please, if your idea is on here dont feel like i am stealing your idea. In fact i am supporting your idea, feel free to post links to your threads here and i will add them to this post.
First off, linking carts.
I hate the fact that if you create a powered minecart to push another cart you simply put it behind the cart and it just pushes it, there is no actual connection. So if the powered minecart runs out of fuel there is then the possibility that the mine carts with seperate due to momentum. my solution is a cart link

you then take this link and in the crafting table place it between two carts and they are linked.
Secondly, i dont like that the powered mine cart has to be behind the cart which you want it to push.
this means that you have to keep getting out of your cart, place fuel in the powered cart and then run and hop in the cart again. This can be solved with the cart link, since then the powered minecart can be in front and drag the minecart instead of pushing it.
Thirdly, i dont like that you can only add a single piece of fuel to the cart.
right clicking on the cart automatically adds fuel and it takes off. This should be changed to mimic the furnace screen. You will then be able to select the number of pieces of fuel you wish to add.
Please feel free to make your own suggestions, if i think they are good i will add them to this list. I really feel that the minecart system in the game needs a somewhat drastic overhaul.

Why not place a single iron bar in between two carts? The compass already uses 4 iron bars and a sword uses two. Since the end result is one compass and one sword, that just doesnt make sense.
Also, how would you link up more than 2 carts? Would the two linked carts them become one inventory item?

first off, i dont even know why compasses and swords are relevant to this conversation, since the link uses three iron bars, not six (which according to your math does indeed give you a compass and a sword)..
and i guess maybe instead of crafting a minecart plus a link plus a powered minecart you could just attach the link to the outside of the minecart which causes carts to stay together, or maybe minecarts should just come with links anyway

Minecarts are hooked onto each other With a tough Iron Stake, not linked with rings.
This allows it to bend horizontally, and not vertically.
Look at how trains are linked.
So the recipe to make one is:

Think of it like a "pin" with the wood able to prevent the iron pieces from falling off.
More controls are needed with the powered minecarts though...
Maybe...
Able to attach a "lever" with the receipt of a powered minecart, and this allows you to "open" the cart to put "fuel" in, and you can activate the switch to make it run (over tossing in 1 coal, repeatingly).
Of course, if the cart is linked, having another lever to "stop" it is important, and this would be another minecart maybe.
1) The Carts basically are able to "push" and "pull" each other, it's just that they are constraint by a link.
2) Carts that don't have any rails under it will unlink when it flies off and lands.
3) Carts still move according to the rails, it's just a "push/pull" attribute that makes it follow each other closely.
This means two linked carts will move slower than 1 powered minecart when it comes to maneuverability.
