Then you have the gear boxes which can change the direction of the torque.
Something like
or
So these boxes would be able to extend the reach or change the direction of the torque power. I would probably place an arbitrary limit of 5-10 or so boxes before power is no longer transferable (friction) just so you don't have ridiculous spinning logs everywhere.
To transfer the power further I would suggest a red stone energy converter. Which basically would take in spinning energy and output 'red energy'. (and vice-versa?)
I suppose this would be instead of torches powering red lines like we do currently. I'd probably build it similar to the gear but with redstone torches in the two upper corners instead of stone/wood.
I would say it needs to be outside and height greater than sea level to produce it's power.
A water wheel would be an underground-possible equivalent that would be similar in it's energy production. It would obviously require running water for it's placement.
TL;DR What other ways could we use this type of energy (torque)? If we have rope I could picture pulling rope up a winch-type device. Maybe some sort of elevator or drawbridge contraption. Would it be worth the effort required to get something like this to work?
EDIT: I'm going to keep a running tally of things we think could be ran by this for easy reference. So Far:
Conveyor belts
Clocks
traps (maybe some type of spinning blades and/or cactusus?)
mine cart booster
elevator
drawbridge
red dust powered things
permanent lighting (for when torches become finite)
water pump
I want this. Good for powering minecarts only or what else would work? Water wheel sounds awesome too, it would be kinda easy though because you could just make your own little waterfall thing to generate power but it would still be really cool :biggrin.gif:

Conveyor belts would be the main hype (for me at least), but they could prove useful for traps, clocks, water wheels (make that flowing water/lava useful), and plenty other uses!
traps would be pretty cool, but it would be really easy for an enemy to just walk off of it :sad.gif: And don't see how clocks would work for it unless Notch actually added an analog clock just for fun...

You aren't quite getting the point of this...
Analog clocks IS what THIS is going to help bring.
Right now, we have ticking redstone systems that could be modified to turn a motor every certain ticks that moves fins (like on the windmill) around and around to imitate an analog clock. Don't know what I'm saying, look at the Big Ben.
You know. Since Notch is going to make Torches limited in the amount of time they burn. This could just be the solution to having a perminantly lit base. Congraz buddy. I support thee good sir!

I love the idea of the windmill (btw, I think that was first posted on the early pages of the Survival Alpha Picture Thread), but I'm not sure if it would work with Minecraft, especially with all the new recipes you guys had to make to accomodate the creation of it. It just doesn't seem worth it to learn all those for one item. And recipes tend to be able to make several things, which isn't the case here. I could be wrong, though. Dunno.

If Notch does indeed make torches have a limited burn time. This could be used (in turn with lights) to light your base perminatly. It would have a max amount of lights it can power of course. But it should be enough that you might only need to make a few of these at a time. It might power like, 30-40+ lights. Which you'd be able to acomidate everything fine.
I really can't wait for Notch to implement any sort of mechanical system. Would add a whole
new dimension of awesomeness to this already super-awesome game!!
(Also, seeing this, I can't help think of dwarf fortress and stupidly intricate mechanics to
pump water. :biggrin.gif: )

This is the single best suggestion I've seen so far!
Offtopic: Nice example pic.

WHAT?! STOP THE PRESSES!
You forgot to include the "rods" (The rotating wood bars in the pic) that connect the torque converters and what-not.

= One wood rod

Or

= One iron rod(Which maybe just doesn't catch on fire or something)

WHAT?
You heard that, green and red.

Okay, I didn't find where I found it. But I did find it on the Minepedia. Link is as follows.

Im pretty sure hes not the first to post this picture with an idea.
Yea, I kinda found that out as I re-read it a few times.

anyway for anyone who didn't notice I'm keeping track of the end-use items in the OP for easy reference in case the idea's ever considered.
