Well, if you don't have to forward ports, then people can't connect to your server. So, if you can't host if from yours but still be able to host it without port forwarding, where ARE the servers hosted at? On Mojang's amazon cloud server? Nope, there would be hundreds of resource-eating servers, I don't know if even Mojang's ever expanding server could stand it...
However, I do love this idea and hope Notch sees this!
YESSSSS!!!!! I NEED THIS!! And so do most mac users. This is going into my sig.
Ignorant you are, my young apprentice. Servers can be run on a mac easily-- I've ran everything from hMod to Bukkit on my iMac.
Also, this is kind of stupid.
1. I don't think that with the game engine we can run servers without port forwarding.
2. The current process keeps out 90% of the idiots, meaning better servers for the masses. This would cause a LOT of problems.
Also, your UI looks like the MS Xbox live UI. It does NOT look like the rest of the game.

1. BY THE POWER OF NOTCH, WE SHALL FIND A WAY!
2. I don't understand why some of you are against people easily connecting with eachother. So what if a couple of noobs join? Do it the DTroll way and harass them until they leave, or LOCK your server? It doesn't seem that hard. In my opinion, I'd rather more people play, and Minecraft be a social game. With the GUI's I've sketched there, it could become a social game. In update 8, I'll be running over a new chat system and stuff. Maybe you'll jump on board, maybe not. Your decision.
Also, I sketched it in Paintbrush man, and I ain't no artist. Obviously, if an artist at Mojang picks this up, It would look a little better than this. Cut me some slack, man.
I'm actually against making hosting easier.
Simply because of server spamming.
At least with the current system, it is required that the creator has an IQ measurably higher than a broomstick.
But with the suggested system, a server could be created if you drop your mouse.
That said, I would like a browser.
Then maybe something can be implemented to avoid that instead of not adding easier server creation all together. If the server you made isn't active for more than a few days, it's deleted.

1. AFAIK, there is NO way to get around the port forwarding issue. /endofthread
2. I'm more apposed to the idiots in general floating around "I can haz free server", "hostzor me a freez minecfrat serv0r noob", "why can't notch remove port forwarding", etc.

I really like this idea, but on the minecraft website, it says that the multiplayer is really buggy and it under major development. The current server system is just to help test the SMP, but overall this is a really needed idea.
seems somewhat like the way BlockLand has hosting, although i think it would be better to have it as a seperate application, so you can have the server in one window still

Sir, I'm not going to flame you on this, but I'm not a noob. I've been playing Minecraft since Classic. I've played Invdev, and I was there in the Alpha. I was there when everything was added to the Minecraft you play today. Just because I'm new on the forums means nothing. Oh, and your "/endofthread" thing, lost its funny back in 2009.
Actually, here, let me say something.
I'm apposed to the idiots who are afraid of change, AND, stereotypes those who WANT change as those who use "Leetspeak". I want notch to make server hosting easier, so people can actually HOST THEIR OWN SERVER WITH MINIMAL WORK to play with their friends.
You sir, need to leave, because you aren't funny, and everyone here seems to be on-board with the idea except you.
To you
Yes I am a ____________ Miner.
Yes I have no profile picture.
Yes that is a bad idea.

You have my word!
Diamonds for you!
I approve! :Diamond:'s for you =D
