I think it would be wonderfull if their was a minimap in the corner, or you could press M and see a map. I get lost very easily haha.
Also if you could put markers on the map to remember where things are.

Make the map craftable!

Well, the feeling I'm getting here is that everyone wants to have the experience that you don't have a pre-implemented map system that makes getting around a lot easier with no work done.
At the same time, a map is a lot more efficient, so how about this?:
We already have paper, why not making a map as part of crafting. You create a map using a 3x3 block of paper. Then you put it in your inventory and start cartographing (that was probably not a word, but anyway...) by activating it with a right click. Once it's activated, it puts your position as it's start point, and wherever you go from there, it fills out in the map.
Obviously, the map has a limited size, so you need multiple maps to chart out a larger region. Once the map is filled out (or maybe even before then) you can use some key (like 'E') to open the map and look at it. It DOESN'T have your current location, but I suppose it would make sense that you would be able to pin stuff on it.
Any thoughts on this slightly modified idea?

i like this idea. but i think a couple modifications will make it better.
1. you have to craft a compass in order to put markers. this could be the compass recipie
gold being north, iron being south.
2. it shows the direction you are facing. i played this game called carnivores and it was super hard to hunt because it didnt show which way you were facing so i had to move around a whole bunch to figure it out...
three things actually.
3. you have to craft the map. this can be done like this.
blank boxes = paper. no paper emote

I don't know how hard it is to implement this, but I approve. I got lost tons of times early game before I started building giant towers that lit up the night sky to know where my different bases were.
One thing, the minimap will not show the height above sea lvl of things, so theres no guarantee you wont march off a cliff.
As long as we're talking about things that might be difficult to implement, there's actually a solution for this. Maybe a mode (a little button that toggles it with a hotkey maybe) that swaps the block colours in the map to blue->red. If you've played dwarf fortress, think of their system of heightmapping. White implies sea level. Higher than that goes to blue (light blue). The higher it gets, the darker the blue gets. When it gets to a certain mid amount of height it swaps to a similar range of orange. When it gets to the high elevations it swaps to red.
Eh. I'd prefer not to have a map, and if I get lost, I should have to find my own way home.
If there has to be a map though, atleast don't show the player on it, instead you should have to look at your surroundings and find where you are on the map.
Make your own map out of your world. Make landmarks, giant arrows, pathways, and your own signs of habitation. Alternately, get creative and make a giant + sign extending from your base of operations. Make a giant sand line extending north, cobblestone south, dirt east, and gravel west. That way, when you find one of the lines, you'll know Exactly how to get back home.
Or make giant arrows out of cobblestone pointing out the way. Easy to see.

Edit: Maybe you could have added functionality if you could attach it to a wall of a 3x3 size. That way you can have large map rooms with maps of the surrounding countryside posted on different walls with labels?

I agree with this. You should have to map out your own surroundings. I think the threat of becoming lost adds to the game, and you shouldn't have a little cheat sheet map you can access anytime by pressing "M" or something. However, if are prepared and think ahead, you can still prevent yourself from getting lost.
The only problem I see with this method is caving. What if someone decided to try and make a map of a cave? If there is a floor of a cave directly above or below the floor you are on, how would you convey that? If the map is top-down, it'll be pretty hard to read.

Well, it's definitely true that vertical height would be pretty hard to represent, but I think I have a solution. Firstly, I have to state that the map would only map out the highest level of terrain around that spot...meaning that until I get a better solution you can't map caves.
Now that I've said that, I'm going to take a hint from topo-maps (topography maps). Essentially height can be displayed with points that have little numbers next to them. Also, to represent gradual height changes, you have contour lines. A system of white contour lines would fit nicely with a coloured map imo. How's that for a basic solution?
(thinking about the underground cave thing....give me some time)
a friend of mine made a program that displays the X,Y,Z of you in minecraft, and places a dot on an image map generated by cartographer
I must say that a minimap is quite helpful. Even if you only know direction while underground, so helpful... but I kind of enjoy the ability to get lost in minecraft.. to not know where you are, or ANYTHING. Minimap is great for creating tunnels that connect things, and all of that.. it's very valuable for builds. But for actual survival, it kind of hurts the experience.
But for actual survival, it kind of hurts the experience.
In which case, you would need to craft a book instead of just paper, which would make a Map vastly optional. Creating a map as an item is far more 'Minecraft' than just a minimap, and thus would solve your problem. If you do not wish to use a Map, then don't!
It is much the same in many Roleplaying games. There are options you can take, but if you truly wish to Roleplay your character, he would not pick an option, thus you do not. I follow the same sort of thinking in games such as Oblivion and Fallout 3. Would my character really run into that room and slaughter everybody? I have the option to, with this massive sword/gun, but I will not.
Thus, those who would want maps can take them, but those who would prefer to get lost and find their way home, they can do so as well.
I do not agree to this
A minimap sucks
All of you people are suggesting a full fledged map not a minimap
A minimap is a screen which shows the map of the surroundings on the HUD
What I would like to suggest that a map which works with two torch like mechanism
Of course it would not be 3D
It should be like you place a torch in one corner of an area and the other torch at the other place
Now the paper will generate everything between both areas with the exception of areas which are not visited yet
It would be like fog of war type map
I do not agree to this

Perhaps you should read posts properly, and read as to a person's intentions with said post, before coming to a foolish opinion you posted. In the very first post, the OP stated that he would like either a Minimap OR a map, and thus our entire conversation about a full fledged map is completely valid. I find it hypocritical that you are also suggesting a 'Map' though.
Not only that, but I found it extremely hard to make sense of anything you said.
A minimap would not be all that good, in my opinion because it would remove the need of landmarks and etc. such as lighthouses. EXCEPT, I could see it like this:
Maps can be forged like this:
= paper
[] = air
[] []
[] []
Maps would give a minimap when opened and examined, allowing for both the need for landmarks for on the go locating such as nighttime, or, in daytime where you are in no hurry, you can use a map.

i think in multiplayer we should at least get a player list with waypoint indicators for each player (if the player is in range and the server actively is telling the client where the other player is)..
Serious sam does this and it works out pretty well. Next to each time there's an arrow that rotates around showing you the direction of the other player, and a distance measurement. For minecraft it could also somehow show if they're above or below you, maybe by making it red/green. who knows
Well the problem im facing in the game is i feel very limited on where i can travel to, i genuinely build near my spawn point so i dont have to walk for an hour every time i die. And what i mean by minimap is a HUD mini map, of course you would have fog on it for places you have yet to explore. And it would only show bird eye view of the world basically. Similar to world of warcraft or any other mmo you plays minimap. And to keep to the minecraft theme, yeah make it so you have to make a map then it appears in your HUD or something cuz if you die and loose your map... whats the point of having one ahhahaa.
Plus i hate making giant arrrows in the sky etc, just seems silly to me.
Also if you could put markers on the map to remember where things are.

This would add a new, amazing depth to the game, and would truly benefit us all, but not be extremely easy to accomplish.
