So if I go and pick up my diamond sword, and find somebody who has been mining and collecting resources instead of fighting mobs, I can one-shot them and take all their stuff?
We don't need a artificial leveling system. We have tiers of equipment that replace it much better. You start out with no armour, and hence little health. You eventually get armour, and your effective health increases. This happens naturally as you progress in the game without having to grind on enemies. Grinding in games is a poor designed, intended to lengthen gameplay artificially. Minecraft does not need grinding, its gameplay naturally extends out to long periods of time. Low-chance item drops that are important are just a form of grinding.

Why you bully hearts? Hearts are what make this the best game i've ever play. This makes hearts even better!

Are you being serious?
You see, the chances of getting hearts are the chances of getting diamonds, so if someone can get their hands on diamonds, you should have time to get hearts. Plus, you forgot about armor. And its not really a leveling system, but, an upgrade like system. You upgrade your tools right? if you think my system is leveling, youd be saying that getting a diamond pick from a steel pick is leveling also.

Don't let them dies, please D'=
They wouldn't let you die if you were in need of hatching!
What attribute of leveling does almost every leveling system include? An increase in health. It is practically a defining feature. Gaining a health can easily be described as levleing up. Getting a diamond pickaxe is an equipment increase; it is an improvement, but it is temporary and fleeting.
And comparing the chance of a mob drop to the rarity of an ore doesn't even make sense. One is a probability of a drop, the other is a density within the map.

So you can compare my system to the analogy I gave you? thank you for seeing it my way. I rest my argument and when you get your self respect back you can explain why i was right in the end.

No, look at Zelda games. You gain hearts but it's not leveling.
You also improve your gears and weapons, just like in minecraft.
Why cant we upgrade our hearts, too?
Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
And here are the reasons why:
1. Leveling should be by the skill of the player, not by random chance as you have suggested.
2.This idea will allow you to die really fast and that quickly becomes unappealing.
3.Leveling itself doesn't belong in Minecraft as it is a sandbox game. Much of the appeal is knowing that in Minecraft, you build for your own satisfaction. Not particularly to survive, but just to have a huge building. This would take that away as most of your focus would instead be shifted to getting the most experience instead of getting more materials.
4. Minecraft doesn't need a unique heart system to be fun
5. This unique heart system would not be fun.
Yah the op and brie are just trolls and this idea should be left to die, cause it sucks worse than the idea of letting players have m16's and ak47's
WHY YOU BULLY AK47'S?
...
In all seriousness, this "unique heart system" is, as many others have pointed out, not unique. Legend of Zelda comes to mind regarding this system. I enjoy Legend of Zelda games... But I wouldn't enjoy its mechanics in many other games, especially not in a game such as Minecraft.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.

if you never hunt down monsters, you dont need health anyways, and leveling is something completely different

Its called other players.
they will have 3 hearts also then. If they work for it so can you.

WHY BULLY HEARTS?!
Many mobs in the future will hit for three hearts.
Many more mobs will hit for more then three hearts.
So what you're saying, is unless you wear armor all the time, you'll start out being able to be one-shotted (two-shotted with the armor) by a zombie?

Not seeing the logic here...
