Alright, I just finished my challenge with a bang.. a creeper bang, sadly. Played it for about 12 hours though. Unfortunately I didnt expect to survive as long as I did, so I didnt record it. I did, however, record a "recap/tour of my base" video after I respawned (reset with a bed) which I'll stick up on youtube once its rendered and such.
I've been playing this map on and off for months. As of this morning, I haven't been able to find anything else left to explore without breaking into walls, though due to the size of the main cave it's difficult to be sure you've explored everything. Last few hours though, the mob count has decreased a lot as it seems just about everywhere is lit up now. >200 mossy cobble collected, tons of iron, lapis, a few dozen diamond and gold, 100's of mobs killed. Large well organized, open base with all the usual amenities. Lighting method is either an unprotected lava wall or a single block of lava from the ceiling into a hole in the middle of a room. Much nicer looking than Guude's methods imo, though admittedly a bit more dangerous. :biggrin.gif:
But it had to happen, carelessness caused my end. I was creating a small area in the floor for extra chests and I fell in. Coulda sworn I wasn't mining directly beneath me, but I guess I must've been. Game over. Pretty good timing as I reckon I was at a stage that was more or less complete without using f3 to find other caves. Very nice seed and set of rules - that cave was MADE for them - no torches, but plenty of lava, and an absolutely massive cave system to explore.
Playing on normal maps with Quarg's torch burnout mod and a self-imposed restriction that I can't break smooth stone with anything but a diamond pickaxe has really made me appreciate all the darkened spelunking practice I got in this seed. Well, more like practice at running away screaming every time I hear skeletons :biggrin.gif:
i dunno... i guess this challenge is okay... but honestly the difficulties only take time to overcome... it's like asking someone to dig using a tea spoon instead of a shovel... it can be done but it'll take longer that's all
went down with a good supply... got my hands on some iron when i was down there and made a couple buckets... every so often i'd dig a little hole and put lava in it to light up the place
after a while got kinda old
if you want a real challenge go play one of Vechs' super hostile maps... or for something like this try Ashien's underground survival map
of course this challenge and thread are old and i'm probably saying stuff that everyone already knows
I actually got the 404 seed with the random seed generator without even realising it. I spawned on the sand near the cave and just remembered when I played the 404 challange that I found a huge cave underneath gravel in that world with water flowing down it after a creeper exploded near it. I just realised how stupid I am for not figuring out that I was in the 404 world without using the seed.

One thing I noticed is that sometimes the sink hole will collapse itself I look at it like ok grab wood and a bunch of supplies and go in. grab all my stuff look back at it and its already collapsed tried about 7 worlds keeps happening no clue y maybe its Mo creatures and a ogre hit something when I spawned on it.
Hey everybody, My friend and I are also trying to do this challenge. We already ventured down and set up a small shelter. I'm recording everything thats happening including how many points we get onscreen, so could you please check my series out? There will be more videos uploaded soon!

Well it seems fine starting out, I don't blame you for setting the time back because you got a bad start spawn time. The video randomly fading in and out was odd and you kinda just stopped the video in mid sentence which is always a no-no. Hope you spend a little more effort on editing the video and choosing a stopping point next time.
On topic: after about a dozen attempts not getting very far I finally managed to last for about an hour and a half before dying. I go all the way to the bottom of the waterfall to where it makes a obsidian floor and then block off the waterfall almost completely so I can make a mob farm (usually fails to kill mobs but it does push them all to one spot that I can stab their feet and get the drops to flow into my room :biggrin.gif:). Beyond that I can usually set up my wheat farm and find 1 or 2 diamonds. My last time I was getting ready to set up my Tree and dug into lava accidentally and died so was disappointed there. I think next time I may record my experience and post it on youtube but who knows since I'm now playing around with the Aether Mod.
I haven't really figured out any good way of scoring this. Maybe having something to do with what materials/items you have acquired while down there. For now, just post your results and we'll probably be able to tell who was the winner :biggrin.gif:
So far it seems that the preparation stage has a HUGE affect on how well you do in the first moments that you get down there. I still have some refining to do on what I decide to bring with me.
If you have ideas for anything with this, please post them. I know that I can't think of everything on my own.
I know im really late but i accept i will post my success

Thanks for giving some constructive feedback! This was my first time recording with another person and we did the gameplay in large section so there was really no clear stop, unless I wanted to upload more than 1hr of footage. However, I will try to make the end of the videos more "concrete" and not leaving people hanging. Look out for more episodes!
**** me, I suck at minecraft.
Entered the waterfall and I died at the end cause of fall damage.
Not playing this again. You can tell I suck by reading this. :angry.gif:
