I spawned like RIGHT next to the sinkhole. :smile.gif: oh, and i might try your challenge, sounds fun! i love how the gravel falls perfectly to reveal it
I don't really understand how seeds work. I think there is currently a common misconception that two worlds with the same seed are exactly the same. I have seen posts like "well this seed gives you coal right to your left if you just dig one block. This is not the case. In fact, they are not close enough that I could tell one seed from another provided they both do the typical spawn on sand and have water nearby thing. My 404 world is nothing special, just on a beach, with some water and flat land around me.
You may spawn a good distance from the sink hole, wherein you are allowed to recreate the world. The sink hole is conveniently close to the origin (0, 64, 0... kinda) so you should never spawn too far away to not make it there and have time to gather materials in the first day.
The worlds ARE the same, and you just need to do a bit of running to find the 404 cave.
People have misconceptions that the spawn point is always in the same location, but that is untrue. This is the sole reason people think the seeds dont give the exact same world.
Theres 2 cool spots in 404 the sinkhole. and sometimes you spawn with a 4x4 cube infront of you which is another huge cave and goes allmost to the bottom. so there is 2 huge caves :wink.gif:
For the sake of this challenge you must enter through the sink hole. In order to maintain difficulty and to be able to relate to each other we all have to start in the same location.
Have to have Mo' Creatures to make it worth it though.
If you are interested here are some rules: You may carry only a limited amount of items on your person at any time.
These consist of 3 material based tools (ones made of wood/stone/iron sword/axe/shovel). 1 of either a fishing rod or a bow. 1 ladder. 3 food items. 1 torch (if using hand held torch mod) or three torches and a flint&iron without the mod. You may not carry any blocks for extended periods of time. Anything else within reason (flint, a sapling, seeds, ect ect).
You may not place OR remove any blocks to blocks to climb/maneuver except certain situations. That is what ladders are for. Shovels may be used to dig blocks, but you cannot place them to climb/manuver or hinder mobs. You may use your fists to punch out rocks in order to climb/maneuver. You may knock down walls only if you know for certain there is something on the other side (you hear a noise through the wall).
Special rules of wood gathering: Gathering wood depends on the level of axe. Fists/wooden axe you may only keep one plank out of every log (throw three away), stone you can keep two, iron three, diamond all of them. These rules are to ensure that axes are not seen as a trash choice for one of the three tools you are allowed.
How are you planning to score people for surviving this experience?
I don't mean "what scores points," I mean "how do you determine what they did?"
Require a video upload of gameplay as it goes? Screenshots wouldn't track a kill count and it'd take a mess of them to chart all digging progress, not to mention visuals will be troublesome with limited light sources.
Really. How do you plan to survey entrants at all?
Funny, I just had a look around 404 and deleted it, so I shall re-gen and accept the challenge.
Creating a tree farm will be difficult given that torches are not allowed. I've done it in my own "cut down one tree then go underground forever" challenge, but that used torches.
Could "never to return to the surface again" be clarified? I.e. what counts as returning to the surface? Would turning it into an open-cut mine be forbidden?

Minecraft=insane
Think if it:
You can destroy a whole mountain with a feather
You have an infinite amount of water in a bucket
Chickens grow when you throw eggs
There are walking nukes
There is hell
Want more? [Notch]
The best way to really evaluate someone is by a video. Of course, not everyone can or is willing to record it and upload it. Screenshots are the next best thing, mostly to showcase how you did.
You really do need to go on the honor system, and since its just for shits and giggles it would be pretty petty for someone to lie just to get a "high score".
I'm more in favor of an abstract scoring system and people retelling what happened to them during the challenge. Compare each person and have the community decide who did better :tongue.gif:
Overall, just remember to have fun and document it as well as possible to share! I'll be taking another serious run soon and I'll post the results, good or bad. I have a fear that I'll be killed nearly instantly again and have to face the shame of being bad at my own challenge :biggrin.gif:
I'd go with video, ideally, but I wouldn't know where to start. Never done video recording of my gameplay in anything before (one exception: two arena matches in WoW, but that was built-in video stuff in the game and looked...shoddy, overall).
Of course, this would be after they fix the game to actually run for OS X 10.5.8 again anyway. -.-
Hell, maybe I can do the video research in the interim.
Okay I have a pretty quick question. Even though I know you can't use torches for lighting, are we allowed to use furnaces powered by coal?
Sounds fine to me. The fact that its very inefficient and temporary seems OK to me.
If something arises that makes using that way too easy I'll change the rule. Until then go for it.
Also are we allowed to build skylights in our cave system for light during the day?
For now, yes. But, you arent allowed to go to the surface (64 or higher), so if something could be iffy on if you did that or not, I would stay away from it.
I may make a further stipulation that you have to stay above an even lower point (40?) so you cant as easy do things like farming and skylights.

I use Fraps, and its fairly cheap, but understandable if you dont want to buy it for 1 video. There are many other free programs that can record decent amounts of time as well.
Recording it on half resolution would be fine as well. Its much easier on your FPS, and is good enough for things like this because we already know what awaits you and likely seen it before. Dont worry about getting 720/1080p resolution for something like this.
On hard too.
