In PCMCv1.12 there are horses, sheep, and pigs near spawn.
There are six (6) abandoned mines within about 300 meters of spawn with one showing in a ravine very close.
The mines should be there in all versions 1.7.2 and later.

There are no dangerous weapons. There are only dangerous people. R.A. Heinlein
If you aren't part of the solution, then you obviously weren't properly dissolved.
It is worth noting that you'll also find all six mineshafts in versions back to 1.4.2 as well since all they did in 1.7 was make then 40% as common, without changing the way they generate, outside of mesas in 1.10+:
ETA - Here is a look at the mineshafts in 1.6.4 and 1.12, using Unmined; note that ravines are the same between versions except that they curve in different directions from their start, the same ravine near -120, 290 exposes a mineshaft in both versions. You can also see that 1.6.4 has well-defined cave systems while in 1.12 caves are more scattered about:

1.12:
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
