This is a proof of concept for an automatic wheat farm that does not require you to replant the seeds. One push of a button lets you collect your wheat out of a chest and go on your way! A villager automatically replants the seeds and gets locked up before he can break the grown wheat.
This build has a locking/unlocking door, water dispensers on a hopper timer, a sorting system to separate the wheat from the seeds and an item elevator that pushes the seeds to the surface for the villager to collect and plant.
Nice well thought out system. I especially liked how the seeds just appeared after harvesting instead of using a dispenser to shoot them out.
I didn't have the audio on (@work) so forgive me if you covered this, but one concern I had was what if you harvested right before dark? The villager wouldn't be able to pick them up and the seeds would decay. Does the system only dispense enough seeds to plant the field and keep seeds in reserve?
Thanks for the compliment! If you did harvest directly at nighttime the seeds might despawn, but nighttime is 7 minutes and the villager would be out anytime before or after that. That leaves only about a 2 minute window per minecraft day that might despawn seeds when you harvest.
Also, our farm has 42 spots to plant so we will get on average 63 seeds per harvest. On the very rare occasion that our villager stays in all night and misses the seeds, they will still have plenty of seeds left over from other harvests to plant.
Thanks! I didn't either until I sat down for a few hours and worked on it haha. I was actually just playing around with it and found out I can tweak it to do carrots and potatoes too.
I like your cow-cooker, so I built one, but I modified the system slightly. The actual mechanism is the same, but I couldn't for the life of me get the adult cows to go in; no matter what I tried they just stood on top of the hole. The calves would go in, though, so I put the adults in a pen adjacent to the cooker and built a size-restricting lock next to the cooker hole, which only calves can fit through. So I breed the cows in the pen and then lure the calves through the lock and into the hole with wheat. Works like a charm!

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
I kinda liked the way I was doing it before. I kept falling in the hole myself and by the time I made room enough to see the wall to dig it to get out, I'd killed all the cows I'd managed to push in the hole. Annoying! It is a lot more convenient breeding the cows in the hole, though.

2. Could you add more villagers to make it faster replanting?
3. What if you set it to harvest automatically every 2 days MC days? That would make it so the villager could be out when it is day and would be automatic.
4. Could you do a tutorial for this? It would be awesome on a server or something.
2. I wouldn't. One of them will almost always get locked out when the other goes inside the house.
3. I generally try to avoid constantly running redstone/clocks. You could do this if you wanted, but if you do it with daylight sensors, remember that sleeping will throw off your timing.

Q. for RabidSmore.
In your design how often does your villager disappear? glitching or leeching out during chunk loads?
(entering the game, returning from nether etc)
I shall try and emulate your design, I only work in survival, and I haven't come across away to completely eliminate the glitching, I have cut it down a lot but never completely. (while giving the villager free range movement ). Working in survival only, makes me go from project to project while the previous are being tested in real-game time.
Thanks for you response and for the link to your latest upgrade to your design.
Newer version was working well, little to no prob's - of course, maybe a daylight sensor/clock would stop the dork who has to press the button if its dusk or even night. ...after that, made it a little more glitch proof (never 100%) - & altered to a 12*7 with 4 water dispensers, prolly can make this more productive with tinkering.......Will leave that till another time , Now it's on to more sub-villages within the large village.
thank you for the build, suited me perfectly, I had lightly concluded that villagers used within the confines of a village is the way to the future. (villager update)
I am trying to build this but I'm having an issue with the fence that is suppose to glitch the seeds up to the top of the world. I did it exactly as the video has it and my seeds keep getting stuck in my fence is there another way to do this or do you have any suggestions.
EDIT: Check out my newer version of this farm here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/redstone-discussion-and/redstone-creations/2516462-automatic-replanting-wheat-farm-84-wheat-per

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

I made a more detailed video on how to build this as requested by a viewer:

Wow man, Gj on the built didn't even know it was possible to make such a farm
Thanks! I didn't either until I sat down for a few hours and worked on it haha. I was actually just playing around with it and found out I can tweak it to do carrots and potatoes too.

A great use for all the wheat you get from this here:

Nice!
This is a really cool idea, and I actually just learned that villagers can plant stuff and collect stuff
Thanks!
Thanks, I'm glad I could help!

Here is the simplest way to get the cows in, just push them into the corner:

4 Things:
1. HOLY CRAP THAT IS AWESOME!

1. IT IS! Why can't I hold all of this wheat?!
2. I wouldn't. One of them will almost always get locked out when the other goes inside the house.
3. I generally try to avoid constantly running redstone/clocks. You could do this if you wanted, but if you do it with daylight sensors, remember that sleeping will throw off your timing.
Great questions!
