Im making a build off map and there are a few feature which i want it to have to make it easier for the player. I want to have the player be able to instantly replace the ground with any block they want. To do the there would be a command block that replaces the ground with whatever block it sees is onto of it. Im having trouble figuring out how to do this in just 1 or 2 commands. Its easy to do with a bunch of commands but thats far too much work to do 16 times. Could someone please help me out?
Well, thats not exactly what I meant. I know I can be pretty unclear sometimes though, sorry.
What I'm really asking, is if there is a way to clone a single block to a large area without having to clone it to each individual block in the area over and over again until its filled. Because my problem is, that I want the player to simply be able to place a block in a machine type thingy. Then it automatically turns the ground to that block. Or a player places two blocks into 2 different machine thingies and then all of the first block within an area are relplaced with the second block.

Use clone:
clone X Y Z X Y Z x y z masked move
Where X Y Z X Y Z are the coordinates of the upper layer (where you place the blocks)
and x y z are the lower layer (where the blocks will go)
This moves every non-air block to the layer below

Oh yea, I see.
My fault, I read it wrong.
Well anyways, I guess this could might work, it's the most minimized thing I can think of right now:
