I've done all of this twice already.. Why won't anyone give me the credit I deserve?
Obvious troll is obvious. This is mathematically impossible due to the infinite regression issue. Until Mojang provides us with a viable new method, this will be limited to semiautomatic use.
I have finaly made an account...I have read all 45 pages of this fourm from the beginning and using abdiel's design I have made a flying machine, yes it follows all of the rules correct me
If I am wrong(yes I know you can't do that as I haven't posted an pictures or videos)DRR DRR. It also is semi-automatic..... It requires you to flip a lever(the same way you do in abdiel's) except I have it set up in such a way that a piston pulls the block that the lever is on(the lever controlling the regular pistons, not sticky. As
I know(too lazy to look how to spell his/her name) Draco or whoever or someone else will ask where the power for the piston pulling the block the lever is on. To that I say... I have my "machine" super small kinda, and the power for pulling the piston that pulls the block the lever comes from the lever that powers the other set of pistons and sticky ones(I have my machine set up like the barge models) therefor when you flip the lever for the other set of pistons the lever not only activates the pistons it also pulls the block the other lever is on the activate the other side..sorry I know no one will understand..I have made lots of dif-kind of ships I will share Pictures in a little bit

I'm sorry but I had a hard time following your description of the flying machine. Pics would be much appreciated.

Lol I know I wasn't home when I though about posting it here. I also knew without pictures or videos or anything it would be pretty impossible... Sorry about that...i might spend the night at my friend's house tonight then I wouldn't beable to show a picture until tomarrow. The best I can explain it I did...if you want I could make a
Diagram thingy with letters meaning stuff(p=piston, m=sticky piston and so on)

If you set up something like Piston-> <-Sticky (Blocks) (RS Block) (Block) (RS Block) and one redstone block powered a paralell normal piston, while one powered a sticky piston somehow, it could make a chain of piston ships and maybe a flying house, but it might not work at all.
So now we have the Redstone Block, which would make this incredibly easy. Only problem is, there's no way to turn it off, meaning you'd have to keep breaking it and placing it anyway (unless some brilliant redstone genius has a way to push and pull it with pistons to power the others).
Hopefully this changes before the full release of 1.5.
EDIT: I may have just thought of a way. I don't have any pics, but I use a certain clock generator often which cylces a solid block, powering the four pistons around it as it goes. perhaps a mutated version of this could be used. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to download pre-releases and such, so I'll have to wait for the full update to try it.
Hmmm I think I might be a redstone genius with spell check. Sorry about no pictures I am playing it on my Xbox 360 not computer(I have computer version though) so I don't have redstone block yet and also can't show pictures with out it being treturous sorry read the coments on this page they are good ideas and also mine is no mods

In other words, it's incredibly easy except for the slight problem that it's incredibly difficult?
Interesting idea, Yubs. Could we do something with spawner minecarts? Maybe falling sand entities of the type Redstone Block? The minecart would not get destroyed and can be pushed, which is why most designs use them as seats. Then somehow you need to delete the redstone block...

I saw this today and my first thought was that the challenge was over. But upon watching the video, there is literally 0 control he has over the "rocket", which makes me question if the challenge was completed or not. While this could be useful to learn from, there might still be a better answer out there.
Sethbling made a rocket today does that one count?

So, using mob spawners minecarts spawning falling sand, we can place a redstone block in a place to power the back one. Now the only problem is removing it. I suppose if you spawned a lit tnt at just the right place you might be able to remove it and keep the piston.

soon the player will know the true power of the redstone block; think about it, its like a redstone torch and it can be pushed by pistons no problem, and can work like normal redstone with shortened length and it just limited to a straight line, all you need to use is a piston.

You can push the block under. But the redstone stays in the same place.
Exactly. Again, hopefully it gets changed to have an off state, while still being pushable.
Which means it just gets destroyed anyway :/
I feel like I could figure out a Bat/Baby Slime/Pig Plane somehow.
Contains Pachebel's Canon made with noteblocks, a working Rubik's cube made with pistons, and the ultimate TNT cannon.

Now, time to start working on controls!

In this case: you're late to the party, bro.
