On my design off the barrage I have not fallen off the engine ever, I believe because you are considered on the pressure plate you fall through the plate and land on the block under it, or maybe its cause I have only used it on smp and creative, oh well... also I edited my older post with instructions, have a look. Also you really cant lose material unless you try...

I've tried to make my system automatic, but there's still many problem
I thought that making a simple 2-long rail on top of two version of my system would work, but the diagonal power prevent pistons to retract, and anyway, if all the piston push the whole structure at the same time, or separately in any order, rails break :sad.gif:, also, I've got no idea on how to propel the cart efficiently.
I could do it if detector rail could turn like normal rail, but for now, except if you find something to make it work, it's a dead-end.
Leave the minecart idea: pushing those with pistons causes problems.
That also means that we can't use tracks in our machine, and THAT means that we cant use the only movable power source. So- if we want a full automatic design, it can't use pistons, because you can't power them. The boat idea seems interesting.
flying... realised in real world but inaccesible in creative in minecraft... maybe there is an end to imagination...
Minecraft is very different than the real world, that is obvious. The reason why is not so obvious.
Minecraft uses minimal physical factors, it has one factor only, and that is gravity, when pistons where introduced it added another aspect, force. Rotary blades in airplanes and Helicopters use Force, Gravity, and Axle physics. Gravity pushes Down, force (should) pushes up, and this creates rotation. To create a flying vehicle in minecraft we would either A:have to base them of of only force and Gravity (which would mean no axle physics). Or B: Rethink physics.
I'm sure it's possible, but it would take thought.
We Can't Exactly make it fly right now, we can make it push us up, for us to "bounce" but there has yet to be continuous flight.
Kind of not like that. It fails the "free floating" and "self powered" requirements.

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable. If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME. Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.
It is impossible at this moment to make a self-powered version, unless we can find a way to drag items across the sky WITHOUT a pre-made track, we can only fit the Free-Floating and Flying Machine requirements. Even though, we have come up with some great advances in piston transport, and at least we can build a FLYING anything.

If you find a way to make a sticky piston pull two blocks simultaneously, you can make a very small, simple, quick one.
My design:
On the bedrock, but pressure plates.
The coal ores represent two pistons facing each other.
One sticky, one plain.
If you want to go left, you put the plain piston on the right.
You operate it by jump-sprinting over the pistons onto the other block and repeating.
I thought I struck gold until I realized that the block doesnt move with the plain piston.
... :sleep.gif:
well, until then bye!
I thought of a fairly simple idea. It has most likely been mentioned before and probably doesn't count. Step 1:Get a regular piston (left) and a sticky piston (right) to face each other. Step 2:Put a pressure plate on a block (that is not effected by gravity) behind the regular piston. Step 3:Activate the piston. It should do this: Step 4:Place a block behind the sticky piston. Place a plate on the block just like step two. Step on the plate. The piston will extend sticking onto the regular. Step 5:Walk off of the plate and the sticky piston will bring in the regular.
(I'll post screen shots of the last steps later). **Note the plates may be replaced by levers to get the same results.
Just thought of something that MIGHT work.
How 'bout pigs?
Pigs can stand on pressure plates.
Pigs can be ridden.
Pigs follow wheat.
I haven't thought much else through.
I have found a way to make unoccupied detector rails power redstone. What i did was i took a sticky piston placed a detector rail in front of it, wired redstone to a repeater wired to the piston and put a mine cart on the rail. Then i broke the cart. Then the rail still powered the piston even though it was unoccupied. this turned into a 1/1 clock that could go up to 8/8.

I already made that, but its able to turn without help and it has a select-able speed. Look in my earlier posts.

ok so in that case it is impossible without any mods :3

Liked "The Art of War"? Sad it was taken down? Now you can read it again!

Only when you hold it... so a drop wouldnt work
I just posted that!

i have a concept that follows the monorail idea, but adjusted
Front, Back View
Furnace is the monorail, and wood is the track.
Side View
...

...
"Free-floating" generally means "not touching anything". So no, not a monorail.
However, I welcome all designs and discoveries, even if they do not meet the specifications.

not sure it's realistically feasible as the detector rail itself can provide block updates.
on the plus side might make for easier non-water harvesting since you don't need different block types.
