What determines the different appearance of grass in different biomes? And what determines whether it has the snow texture or not? Is that also a data value? Because the machine isn't capable of producing those kind of changes.

Grass is grass. If you mean it's color, that's biome data (based on the world's seed and a color transition png).
If you mean long grass, that's placed by the world generator and then never changes as far as I know (the player can cut it down or use bonemeal to get more, but I've never seen it spread by itself).

I think different tall grass has different block values altogether.
I meant grass blocks. I know it's based on biome, I was just curious if the different appearances also are different data values same as wool.
Also, FYI, changing the appearance of a grass block by placing/removing a snow block above it does not trigger a block update (adjacent to the grass that is).

No data values involved, and the grass block itself is not altered in any way when snow is placed above it. Instead, the code that renders the blocks specifically states that a different side texture(with snow on it) should be used for grass blocks with snow on top of them.
If you made snow invisible would the grass top have color?

Probably white.

Ah, that's what happens. Me and my friend found it in SMP when we were making completely random things, and we were like "Did you take my wool?" and stuff. Didn't find how to get the rest of the options though.

I am decent at Lua and Python, and am an expert with C, C+, HTML, Java, Javascript, and redstone. Gotta love redstone.
Should I post about a "glitch" that makes a piston extend and retract so fast it can double any solid(not glass, stairs, tnt is a no-no or pistons of any kind)block, with a few tries.
I can duplicate diamond blocks...
So getting removed...

They've been posted in the past, and honestly, I disbelieve.
So sure. Go ahead and show us how you do it.

I think i know the bug he is talking about but i tought it was removed?
That contraption used a smart piston and othr piston that pulled the block while the other pushed it duplicating the block. On 1.0 i think or something, anyways, an update they fixed it and the block just dissapeared and i think now it does nothing.

The contraption doesn't work anymore because sticky pistons lose stickyness when pulsed too fast. That was how Mojang fixed the dupe bug-- making sticky pistons less sticky.

So its confirmed they removed it. After i tryied one i made on my creative world and failed i didnt use it anymore. So now thye have to remove the power rail dupe an other dupe bugs.
Anyways im sure the guy above was refering to that contraption.

the deleter is the one that creates block 36 right?
lol, it is spreading...
That's not data value; biomes affect that.

No, not at all. Completely independent. Grass color is a render (GPU level) function.

and when you put block on it:
After a long long life, you find out that infinity is really not all that long.

That change was made a long time ago, actually.
