Here's the fruit of my labor! If I add anything it'll be a bypass for the on so the pistons will activate faster then when they turn off. I need a break though, I haven't slept much...
Just put this video up on YouTube. I looked around to see if anyone else has done this yet but came up short, so I apologize if I missed something. I hope this is helpful and I defiantly would appreciate any insight into how to improve this design. Let me know what you think and thanks for checking it out!
Here's an update with a more streamlined design (the wiring is a bit bulky)
Also with the lava one, use workbenches? or does the sign and the workbench work in the same way with fire? Oh I see the lava is just open tp the obisdian.

I tried making it work with the workbench, I thought I could use pistons to keep the wall flush from behind. It didn't work well at all. I'm going to keep trying to see if I can make it work because it would be cool if I could clean it up like the non-lava version. But to answer your question the sign does respond to fire the same way a workbench does.
Kudos for coming up with this, but it's already been invented - several times I'm afraid :wink.gif:
The first I've seen that uses official pistons is - also introducing a neat way of hiding the lava and using a thin water blade that won't spill.
In a variation of this I moved all the mechanics behind the portal.
So now it's all about aesthetics :smile.gif: Your way of pushing a wall into the portal looks great, maybe it's possible to use a block swapper for the lower part to combine this with hiding the lava. And (very) maybe it's possible to use double extenders for a completely flat wall.
Thanks for the links, I think I figured out a way to improve my design a little more. Really liking the double piston idea!
I'm wondering, does the button press turn the portal on as well?
Nope, what turns the portal on are the signs above the lava. Signs can catch fire but can not be consumed so they immediately extinguish, but it ends up being just enough to lite the portal. The major drawback to this is that fire takes a random amount of time to lite the portal so you could wait anywhere from five seconds to five minutes.
i watched the second video, looked interesting, not gonna watch the first because internet is playing up, but how does it light the portal back up?
Oh man. Check the post above your own.

Think of the portal as a barbecue grill. A gas grill to be specific. When you open the door it's the same as opening the lid and turning on the gas. Now you can stand there all day with the lid open and the gas running and get nothing more than a feeling of light-headedness, and that's why most newer gas grills have starters. When you turn on the gas the starter generates a spark and the gas is lit all with the turn of a knob. This portal works in the same way. If opening the wall to expose the portal is like turning on the gas, then the lava with the signs over it is like the starter. As I stated above, the lava can ignite the signs but the signs will not burn. They also take up a whole block of space, so when they catch on fire (for that split second that they can) they can ignite the portal.

Hmm, that strikes me as a bug. Would there be any other way?

Yes, this is a bug that signs "burn", but it goes out immediately and so is not really a major one.
There are ther ways, but they all rely on the same principle. A flammable block is put next to the unlit portal air space, and is lit through lava.

If you want to cheat even then, simply use that block update (being on fire) to move a sticky piston holding that block. Instant extinguish.

AFAIK, only explosions (or a bucket dumped into the portal) will close them.

That sounds painful....
I'll look into it!

Off to the lab, I'll post an update later.
Done! Let me know what you think!

It might be, but as it stands onlly signs and workbenches behave in this way. Wish notch would add a flint and steel block.
