So recently I had an idea and need some help. I built everything and then powered it up and it woks when it starts but when I kill the power it messes up.
This is what I need to do and need some help making it.
I have 4 pistons on top of each other shooting up.

Then when I power it up they should now be a total of 8 spaces high instead of 4. The I need them on a delay. So the first one goes up then the second and then third... etc...
I found out how to do that pretty easily. The issue I am having is how to make it go in reverse. Instead of having the first one go up first have the first one go down last when I switch the toggle.
Any ideas on how I can do this. I can explain it a bit better as well if needed.
You need to power and unpower them in the right order. I made a horisontal version(for this and longer ones), but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how to make it vertical. I'll upload a schematic for you.
Thanks.. I'd love to see it. This is bothering me and when I find out how it can be done that would be easy.
These are really bulky, since sticky pistons don't pull pistons when they are unpowered, they must be retracted in a very specific order. It's very confusing.
You can't just extend like piston 1-2-3-4 and then retract piston 4-3-2-1
It's more like retract piston 4-3-2 extend 2-3 retract 1 extend 2 retract 2 extend 3 retract 3
That might be off, because that was from the top of my head, but you get the picture.
However, it IS very possible, just very complicated and slow. But good luck anyway(=
power in this order: 1357. then when you want to retract, unpower all of them at the same time.
then give a pulse to 5 then 6.
then give a pulse to 3,then 4, then 5.
then give pulse to 1, then 2, then 3, then 4.
when i say a pulse, the pulse of a button should do.

I shoot my arrows in the air sometimes saying ay-oh, creeper's KO'd
I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades

Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
But that only requires the correct retraction sequence for a three high stack, as the final piston does not need to pull a block along every time.
True, it uses gravel falling. Retracting a single gravity-immune block the entire distance requires 3 extra pulses, at positions 6, 5 and 4, as the mechanism returns.
I don't know the details, but I know it involves some sort of memory. You have to extend them in order 1234 which toggles a toggle thingy then retract them in order 4321. By using the toggle thingy the device will known what state the pistons are in, and therefore be able to decide whether to retract or extend.
Where is the tutorial?
Forever a troll: Where is that schematic?
Unfortunately, time hasn't permitted detailed tutorials. For myself, I prefer good explanations and diagrams to having to watch a video.
WorldEdit STILL hasn't added piston support to produce .schematics! I'm not sure how to publish them otherwise with reasonable effort, without 400MB FTPs to get the world file into MCEdit.
If you want simpler wiring, if not necessarily more compact and much slower, it also works to send a series of pulses along the retraction direction... though I don't think it works vertically.
