Ok, let's pause for a second. I know what you're thinking, you're about to scroll down to the comments section and criticize me. Yes, I am not happy with 1.8, but not for the reason you think.
Minecraft 1.8 is full of nice features, and besides the horrible changes to mob farms, I like pretty much everything about this update. But there is one thing bugging me. There are no actual changes to survival.
Sure, Mojang added a lot of things that can be utilized in survival MODE, but nothing added actually changes the entire purpose of survival mode, staying alive. And it's not like survival doesn't even need a lot of changes anymore. After you get a full set of iron armor (skipping leather, of course), you have no reason to worry about dying. Wooden tools are absolutely useless with the exception of pickaxes. And in just a few hours work, you find yourself invincible. This is not a good thing, since the name of the gamemode is quite clearly named "survival."
We haven't gotten major changes to the survival aspect of Minecraft since when? Beta 1.8? Nine updates ago. It's not like it's been over a year since they overhauled survival. This is not good, while the foremost purpose of Minecraft is to create anything in your imagination, survival takes a close second. It adds difficulty and excitement into the game, and without it you have a very dull, yet versatile game.
So, what can Mojang do? For one, they could work on balance. Wooden tools are useless, and gold tools are even worse. They can also prolong the excitement that occurs when you know that you could very well die soon if you mess up. [/rant]
Are people still whining about that small bugfix? The Iron Trench was OP, it's best that it's gone. It was ridiculously massive and hard to build as well.
Anyways, I agree with you. Absolutely nothing game changing has happened that actually affected regular survival yet. However, once the under the hood changes are complete, we ought to start seeing more features, even if it's just a new food.
Mob farms in general are part of the problem; instead of actually fighting mobs, people would rather just sit back and let the game do the work for them - what's the point of playing Survival then?
As for myself, I haven't even used 1.7 yet for my main worlds; I do use some mods (but nothing game-changing), but in terms of how I play the game there is nothing new (if anything, they made the game worse by removing giant cave systems, though it is easy to mod them back in). I've even added a few 1.7 features into my game, such as natural spawning of witches, and at this point 1.6.2 (didn't even bother with 1.6.4) will probably be the last version of the game I ever actually play on, unless some really big feature comes in down the line (of course I'll still mod the game, e.g. cave generation, unless they add some sort of world generation options, and restoring the old anvil repair/renaming system).
But there is one thing bugging me. There are no actual changes to survival.
Yes they have. They are adding 3 new kinds of stone with crafting recipes for them. They are also adding iron trapdoors and more interaction with villagers. Granted, the villagers need some more work, but as others have said, it's still in development. All of these features affect Survival mode.
This thread is a bit premature isn't it? 1.8 is, what, 1-2 (or more) months away still? Dinnerbone supposedly has a list of adventury survivaly stuff that Mojang decided to do for 1.8. That is all he said in his tweet about it not too long ago. But I'm not expecting anything huge, 1.8 seems to be heading towards the Map Making & Plugin Update.
But who knows what that list contains, maybe the new cave formations that DB talked about in his reddit Q&A, something that I would absolutely love to see. As nice as the new stone types are, the caves are still rather monotonous in structure and content and haven't really changed much at all since the game was brand new to the scene.
Snapshots are not mini updates. They are not done yet, not for a while. As said in the tweet, every update had survival aspects in them. How can a biome update not be related to survival? They added plenty of survival stuff. You sound pretty selfish from my point of view. Some people don't want survival stuff and just want the bugfixes and mapmaking tools.
Sure, Mojang added a lot of things that can be utilized in survival MODE, but nothing added actually changes the entire purpose of survival mode, staying alive.
And even your complaint confuses me. Do you want to change the purpose of survival mode?!?! It's fine as it is.
Before hating, please listen to what I am actually saying. First of all, let's not talk about mob farms, I'm sick of discussing that topic. Second, I am not saying that they did not add good things into the update. Third, I know that snapshots are not done, but if they didn't add any changes in the area I was talking about, then it's not likely that in these more bugfixy snaphots that we will see change. Fourth, I did not say they didn't add a lot to survival MODE. I'm saying they didn't actually add anything that has to do with surviving. Iron trapdoors and new types of stone do NOT help or hurt your chances of staying alive. I'm grateful that mojang is going through the trouble of making these free updates, but at least add what you advertise blatantly in the title.
I'd have to agree that I want to see more things that help or hurt your chances of staying alive. However, I think it's a bit premature to be making topics like this. On average, there are four months of snapshots before an update. We're less than two months in, and I have a suspicion that they may go a bit longer.
I, on the other hand, am having a blast with the /fill command. I just dug out an entire Zelda style dungeon in like 20 minutes. Normally it would take many hours of work to dig out each room by hand, but now I can create room templates by just copy/paste.
I will admit that the lack of changes to survival does make me kind of not want to play survival right now. Perhaps the future of Minecraft survival will be the mod API. As long as Mojang will put in place the base code to make the alterations we want, everything will be good.
I am not a fan of the lapis enchanting system because 3 levels for a lv 30 with 3 lapis it means with a op grinder you could become op with enchanted tools and weapons
i actually have to disagree with you, under the new enchanting system I haven't found any reason to build a XP farm yet, usually it's the first thing I do after I have a base set up.... It mostly removes the need for mob traps all together for me, I will build one eventually but that will be so I can grind out gun powder to use on my next base.
I've been disappointed with the last couple of updates. Mojang has really gone down hill since 1.0 first rolled out, with a few little victories like 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5. However, aside from those updates most of what they've added since then is utter crap. Updates are few and far between, months upon months for a little update that adds everything we never asked for. Let's take 1.6 for example. It added horses. Look familiar? That's because THEY ARE THE SAME EXACT HORSES (and items) FROM DR. ZHARKS MOD. Heck, they even got him to do it for them. Lets also look at 1.7, the "Update That Changed Absolutely Nothing Useful". What did it add? Podzol. The literal block of crap. Nothing in the entire update had any functional purpose, and it was all re-textured decoration blocks. How long did it take to roll out? A lot longer than it would take me to make a small game (believe me, I have). Finally, I'll address the next update, 1.8 (and it will probably name it something ridiculous, since it seems now they are naming every new update, which really destroys the feeling I got when a named update rolled out *OMG ADVENTURE UPDATE ITS ACTUALLY NAMED IT MUST BE GOOD! (and it was)*), 1.8 seems to only have added command changes and NBT tag changes, and a FEW functional items like slime blocks. Yipee, trampolines. Now where is that crossbow I've been waiting for 2 years since bows and swords got boring. They have changed minecraft from the original idea of a survival sandbox game to "Pimp my Pad", with updates only adding decoration and recreation items/blocks, and commands and NBT tags for people to screw around with and nothing that actually impacts gameplay in any way. That is the reason I stopped playing minecraft. When I knew that the crap had hit the fan, and updates didn't add anything to enhance my minecraft experience.

When you get screwed by admins but you can't do anyhting because they are admins. That feeling of injustice.

Oh boy! Three new types of stone?! I can't WAIT to experience the thrill of utilizing the exact same block THREE MORE TIMES! Iron trapdoors, you say? As if wooden trapdoors weren't obvious enough. Hello, it's called TRAPDOOR, not OBVIOUS HATCH TO SECRET BASEMENT. More interaction with villagers? You mean the annoying squidward noises they now make? Even BETTER!

What made these updates "Victories?" 1.3 especially was probably the most bug riddled update in history of the game due to the SSP and SMP merge.
However, aside from those updates most of what they've added since then is utter crap. Updates are few and far between, months upon months for a little update that adds everything we never asked for.
Name one thing in any of the past 7 major updates no one asked for. You can't, because it's simply not true. These past few updates have contained a lot of community requested features, such as new terrain generation, horses, stained glass, new music, commands, balance changes, etc.
It added horses. Look familiar? That's because THEY ARE THE SAME EXACT HORSES (and items) FROM DR. ZHARKS MOD. Heck, they even got him to do it for them.
Is there a problem with that? Modders working with Mojang should be highly encouraged. You are also years too late if you've decided to complain about mods getting in Vanilla, things such as the lighting engine, pistons, and save formats were all mods before Mojang put them in the vanilla game.
Lets also look at 1.7, the "Update That Changed Absolutely Nothing Useful". What did it add? Podzol. The literal block of crap. A lot longer than it would take me to make a small game (believe me, I have).
Only added Podzol, eh? Hm, I could swear it added more. Oh yeah:
More than double the amount of biomes in the game
Temperature system
Complete re-write of the Resource Pack system
Complete re-write of the sound engine
Complete re-write of the Network Code.
Fixes for infamous lighting bugs
Many new options
New commands
New achievements
New fishing mechanics
2 hours worth of new music by C418
Scoreboard
Stained Glass
New potion
Twitch broadcasting
And the list goes far beyond.

This part of the post has so many parts wrong its not even worth pointing them out considering 1.8 is nowhere near a releasable state. Dinnerbone has already stated he still has a list of survival mode changes to be implemented concerning adventurey aspects. This update won't be purely what you say it is.
This update has added so many things for mapmakers and quite frankly it's about time.
We just had a massive survival world change, every biome was tweaks as well as block additions, now mapmakers have exponentially more tools to play around with to make exciting adventure maps.
Just saying, the fact that they didn't release much new (complicated) content for survival likely means they will hold it for 1.9, because, if you think about it, why would anyone be silly enough to add a potentially bug ridden feature a week before the release? No, you release the big features early in the snapshots so that you can find bugs, granted, Mojang might add a few nominal things to survival, but I doubt this update will be very significant to the average survival player.
Though, to be honest I kinda stopped caring, because the only thing Mojang really does in new updates is force modders to update, oh yeah, and add a tiny amount of semi-ok (and sometimes cool) items/blocks/entitys/whatevers that you could have likely gotten from a mod anyways (oh, and pretend to work on some API to help modders out, lols)
There is already a whole bunch of updates mostly for survival mode! Even the latest 2 updates is mostly for survival mode! Can't you just give the mapmaker what they have been waiting for? Even I, who plays on an SMP server most of the time I play Minecraft is okay with this. So why can't you just be a nice person and be happy with what they give.

Hello there! I like leather caps and the number 2.

My response wasn't based on personal opinion, yours is. The OP comment was that NOTHING new was added, I was simply correcting them. I didn't say whether I like them or if the changes were good or bad, but it needed to be clarified that changes had in fact been made.
By your response we now know your true colors. When you complain, it's all based around what you want and what you think should be done and how the game is ruined for millions of people because you didn't get what you want. amrite?
You can also make survival more challenging by adding more mods that add mobs (like Mo Creatures and others). This is why I think it is so important that Mojang now concentrates on internals (bug fixing) and API so that writing mods becomes easier. And yes, I do believe that they are working on that. If you following DinnerBone and others on twitter they talk a lot about API related changes.

Ok, nothing changes in the way survival works.
Nothing (new) to make it easier or harder...
Most people complain survival is too easy, new mobs are needed to make it challenging, food and stuff are too easy to get and so on...
[...]
If you know a game (whatever it is), the game gets easy.
Want a new challenge?
Get a new game, download adventure maps, give yourself a goal.
New mobs and/or structures will get "boring" after a few weeks anyway, once you know how they work.
There are quite a few games whose difficulty is still up there no matter how long you've played it or how much you know the mechanics. All Minecraft has to do to stay difficult for people is up the ante and spread out the difficulty scale, and also improve mob mechanics and other such things so that on Hard, regardless of whether you know how they work, it's still hard to win.
You know, an actual "hard mode," a mode in which experienced players will be challenged and face things they never have before. A mode where despite experience and knowledge you still may not survive. A mode that players will want to avoid unless they want a challenge.
This is loosely related to having more things that help or hurt your chances at survival. Things that help or hurt your chances that aren't difficulty related (like the treasure maps that Dinnerbone said he was thinking of, or some sort of randomly-generated trap structures, or new hostile mobs, or enchanting, brewing, and all that, or some other things) seem more like what the OP wants.
Why does everyone try to suger-coat the fact we haven't recieved any significant survival update? I wouldn't really consider better Villagers and enchanting improvements an improvement to the greater survival experience, considering how their in reality late-game items. Neither is minor stuff like slime blocks, new stones, and a trap door.
Such a vivid and exciting new survival experience. Definately.
I like the new map-making features too, but do we really need to slam others over the lack of survival features? I mean, come on, survival as been the root of this game since Classic and its nice when they decide to expand on this gamemode.
The first snapshot of Minecraft 1.8 has arrived! This update will be split into two primary focuses: Survival gameplay & improvements, and new fancy abilities for adventure maps!
This has been an update of un-fulfilled promises for mainstream survival. There's no real other way to glaze over this.
Minecraft 1.8 is full of nice features, and besides the horrible changes to mob farms, I like pretty much everything about this update. But there is one thing bugging me. There are no actual changes to survival.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
