I'm sure we're all exited about the new skin format, but I have some questions, hoping someone would answer them:
1. Converting. I don't expect to have a tool today, but I'm wandering if anyone is making a tool to convert the old skins to the new skins, or if it's even possible (but I'm pretty darn sure it is).
2. Covering with extra layers. You know how (in 1.7.2, at least) when you cover your whole face with the hat layer, the hat layer becomes transparent? Is it like that with the jacket/pant legs/sleeves? Is it still the same with the hat?
3. Skin settings and multiplayer. You know how there's settings to turn off and on extra layers? Does it turn off just your entities' layers, or everyone of the server's layers?
Thanks in advance if you can answer them.

I'm just a Minecraft player that likes to give my opinion. Nothing special to see here.
Okay, answer number one: Your skin still works in it's 32x64 format, and if you want to just add the extra layers to your current skin, you can copy your skin on to the top of a 64x64 image, and following this example picture http://i.imgur.com/kZ6r4Ks.png the 2 is the higher layer RL and LL are right and left legs, RA and LA is the arms.
Answer number two time! There is really no reason to program a tool to copy your skin image onto a 64x64 image.
Last but not least: It only changes your skin when you turn off layers.

Thanks so much... but I don't think you understand my second question, and do you know if other players will see that you've turned off those layers on their side? (I.E. I turn off my hat, can others see that my hat is off?)

Oh yeah I misread, answer number two was directed towards the first question.
And I tested if you can toggle the layers and have the other players see them change in LAN (on the same computer but I don't think that changes anything) and it, to my surprise, works!
Excited? BAH! using custom skins on game avatars isn't anything new. Games have been doing this for over 20 years. Geez, Mojang seems to be starting things from gaming 101. While I'm glad they finally added this feature, but really should have been a standard base feature from the very begining (along with many other features they're finally getting around to.) We shouId be expecting more from games at the begining. It will be interesting to see the new creations player make though. Excited? Nah . . ., but nice to see it FINALLY be added.

Nah, not really an attitude, but an opinion. I love Minecraft, it's been consuming huge amounts of my spare time for over a year now. I still love the game/program, but . . . I see so much possible potential with what Mojang has created. I've been gaming for MANY year now, so I have history on what's new in games, and what's new and industry setting.
They've made gaming history with a huge editable world. No ones done it to the scale they have. Now that's truly exciting.
Redstone circutry. Amazing feature. not done to this extent before in a game. Aain, that is truly exciting. Cheers all around.
Adding the ability to create more custom skins for our avatars? Meh, ok, sure this is better, and nice, but if they had taken some tips from previous games, we'd be well past this point already, and maybe they'de be releasing something new and amazing like the two items i listed. Sorry, but I hunger for amazing and new. They have shown they can do it.

Ok, first of all, there have been custom skins in Minecraft for a long time, don't know where you have been. All they did in the snapshot is make them MORE customizable.
What feaures are they FINALLY getting around to? Don't they just, like, add features as they feel necessary?
For some reason the Minecraft community comes up with ideas to the game, and Mojang actually listens. Do you know many other games that do this? Many other games that you pay for it once, and the game updates with new features, for free, at least once a month?

I smell a troll, a jerk and/or both.
*laugh* Are you kidding us here? Where have I been? I've been a computer gamer for over 20 years. (Yes, that dates me. *sigh*) But seriously . . . I didn't say the change was bad, not at all. Just tried to convey that this kind of ability has been around a LONG time, and I didn't feel it was worthy of getting excited over. I explained why too. I challenge us to expect more from our game developers, and start where past games have left off. We'll get super amazing games from that approach.
As for listening to the community, and incorporating updates and new ideas. Again, are you kidding? Mojang/Minecraft isn't the first of it's kind, nor the first to listen or provide free updates and community ideas. Not by a long shot. It isn't a new concept at all. Others in the past have had open chat's with their communities for players to ask questions live. All sorts of communications between community and devs have been used, and for a long time. So, what you described is not new by any means. You might be young to the world of computer gaming, but many others are not. (such as me *sigh* *laugh*)
Anyway, not trying to rag on anyone, just trying to nudge Mojang and the community I guess a little to ask for big amazing things these days. Play as you like, and get excited over whatever you want. It isn't a problem.
I used the templates. And I also understand that there are transparency issues. Are you saying that the new format counts in instead of out? (such that the underlayer is now 2 and outer layer is 1?)
I've had an issue with hats for a long time now, and was hoping this new system would fix it, but it hasn't.
I'm just using ms paint, and I'm doing everything right, I upload the file, no problems. I go into minecraft, I have no hat (or any other outer layers).

The problem is this isn't symmetrical, and you did put your leg on left arm 1.
Here, this picture SHOULD help you get it right. http://imgur.com/PzcWfeV

Don't use MS paint. It turns transparencies into black pixels, and if your hat fully covers your face, the hat becomes fully transparent. Use photoshop or paint.net.

No, and I'm not really sure how to explain why in an intelligible fashion.
Here's some links that might help.

I appreciate that you aren't being aggressive, and respect your opinion, I'd just like to let you know that it's wrong.
