So I was just watching some update videos for the snapshot and heard that lightning now turns villagers into witches?
Tell me this isn't true, that's a terrible idea!
Look I play on either hard or hardcore so I like a challenge, but all this change does is give me even less reason to bother going to, hanging out in, or building up a village. The last thing that I want to be doing is playing around in a village and puff I'm dealing with a Witch.
Maybe it's just me, but I hate this idea. I actually want to play with the villagers in their villages rather than just breed them. What do you guys think?

I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, then Jesus! this coupled with the new breeding changes, entire villages will be wiped out before the chunks even load!

Please excuse any and all errors, whether they be grammatical or factual. I try my best, but no one's perfect.
The new zombie mechanics are far more likely to wipe out a village than a random witch. Besides, most people exploit the crap out of villages anyway, making them into villager farms. And if you're going to do that, then you could always just put a glass ceiling over your village if you were really concerned.
Besides, look at it this way:
Lightning changes creepers into Super-Creepers. Lightning also changes pigs into zombie pigmen.
How many times have you actually encountered either of those things happening? I've played a lot of Minecraft, and I can honestly say I've never actually seen either of those things happen, ever.
For how amazingly rare it's going to be, I wouldn't worry about it.
EDIT -- Because I just realized something else:
The only mob that actively attacks villages is zombies. Skeletons, creepers, spiders, etc. are not aggressive to villagers. I haven't tested it, but I highly doubt witches would be aggressive to villagers either, so even if one of the villagers does get turned into a witch, the witch won't wipe out the village anyway.
Yes, you'd lose the ONE villager that got turned into a witch, but really? For how often that's going to happen? Hardly an issue. There's WAY more things in this game far more dangerously stupid than this.
@ Divinius, it's a good point about how rare it is, I think that I have only seen the others 2 or 3 times, so you're right it shouldn't be an issue.
The rest of your response opens up a whole different conversation though. Should villages just be farms or should they exist as actual villages. Personally I like my villages to be just that, villages. But in order to play that way, you're right I would need to create a dome over the whole thing now along with the walls. It's just unnatural to build a giant dome over a village that is built from wood and cobblestone.
What gets me is that changes like this make it so that the only way to play with the village is to turn it into a farm. Anyone looking to exploit the village will just build a ceiling over it and they no longer have the .1% chance of dealing with a witch. But anyone that isn't exploiting the village still has that chance available to happen and getting a random witch to appear (granted very rare).
I won't deny that the new breeding mechanic is idiotic. I don't know why they thought it was a good idea.
Actually, I can guess why they changed the breeding mechanic... Because they were trying to stop villager farms. What the devs fail to realize is that trying to stop players from creating farms is as dangerously useless as copy-protection. It does nothing to stop that people that are going to do it anyway, because they will find a way around it, and only serves to screw over the people that aren't doing it in the first place.

I actually completely agree with you on the "I shouldn't have to make my village into a farm to keep it" thing, but as I said, the new zombie mechanics are FAR more dangerous, and likely to completely wipe out a standard (unprotected) village, than this lightning/witch thing is.
Doesn't seem like that big of a deal considering villagers go indoors during rain and thunderstorms, topped with the rare chances of it happening to begin with.

Unless you have houses with no ceilings.
Lightning can strike outside a wall, but affect things on the other side. so the lightning can hit beside the village house, and make villagers inside the house into witches.

I think its not the hugest deal, besides the fact that witches are dang annoying. While the strikes themselves won't kill more than a few villagers, the witches can damage others in the process of attacking you.
This does have the potential to affect me, so I may be annoyed by it. Even if a rare occurrence. Hear me out, this isn't a complain. Just a demonstration of how it may affect some players.
I always like to build a village close to my home. Some 500 blocks away at most. It's one of those things I always do. If there is a village already close by, I wipe it out. I just like to build them myself.
I do this the hard way. I lure in, trap and cure zombies. I then start construction. I then deface my houses to include a bunch of doors to make up for the stupid 0.35 villager per door ratio (which would otherwise mean 70% of my houses would be empty), I then release the villagers in the village, I then wait for breeding to be over, I then restore my houses to their correct form, I then am happy.
This takes around 1 week of real-time play to conclude, including disposing of repeated villagers until I get a nice distribution of professions. I don't trade (ever) or do much anything about my villages. I just like to build them and walk around its streets.
A single villager being transformed into a witch, doesn't worry me in the sense that the witch will just eventually despawn. But it will mean I will have to deface all my houses again in order to kickstart breeding and restore my village population. And THAT is annoying.
It qualifies right there with creepers's ability to destroy blocks or enderman's ability to take blocks. It's a random action that unintentionally shapes the world and removes control from the player. I have a definite way of stopping creepers, endermen, et cetera. But currently no way to control this.
I agree it's not a big deal. But it's a deal. And I would like for a /gamerule stopGrieffingMeForPetesSake true command.
No, that isn't a solution. That's a patch that would make my world just ugly. I like to play Minecraft for function true, but mostly form.
Do not mistake my comments has b*tching. I'm really not annoyed about this issue. I will take it as not being a big deal and I can quickly learn to live with it (considering I will rarely, if ever, witness it). I'm just pointing out the problems, since I tend to dislike on principle the idea that anything meant to grief you isn't something that affects you.
I think 1.X has to focus on modifying villager AI, seeing that zombies are far more intelligent, even capable of overpowering the infinite intelligent player.
And I like to post this around wherever villagers and the new mechanics are mentioned:
Let villagers represent some species.
Villagers are somewhat intelligent, capable of trade.
Villagers seek shelter in times of danger or unfit environment (night time)
Villagers defend themselves (iron golems, flawed...)
Flaws of villagers:
Passive unless interacted via trading, attacking, or time change.
Unable to generate sustainable shelter. (requires prebuilt structure for colonization)
The biggest problem of villagers is that a greater predator exists above them (that is un existing irl) that will target them.
Zombies are intelligent.
Zombies will find a path within a maze to the villager.
Zombies are capable of spontanious generation, without the need of breeding, and when damaged, have a chance to spawn another zombie.
Zombies are have a high chance of spawning at night.
Zombies are capable breaking defenses (doors on hard difficulty, swarms can overpower golems)
Take this to the real world, would a species obviously overpowered by a predator be able to sustain itself? No, so the only solution is the active player with infinite intelligence to step in and aid them or allow them to die.

However, I don't even know the last time I saw a charged creeper. Ever. Over hundreds of hours of playing MC, I have never seen a charged creeper.
Same with how I will never see a villager turn into a witch.

Oh yeah... I forgot about that too.
But then, by definition, they wouldn't be houses.
It can?

/gamerule doMobGriefing false. There you are.
Now, if we could drop the whole thing about witches spawning everywhere, that would be nice. And make them be-friendable.
Somebody take a screenshot; apparently I don't hate everything Mojang does!

No. That's not the command I'm after. I already know about that one.
