I was wondering what you all thought of the new fishing and if it's overpowered, underpowered or if it's good how it is right now. My personal opinion it is a bit overpowered because of all the things you can get from it. Power 4 bows, nametags, multiple high level enchants on one book, etc.
I personally like that there are more reasons to fish & another way of getting things like saddles. I would even like it if we got more of the treasure, especially the enchanted books once we have a rod that is enchanted. I have spent a lot of time (many hours) fishing & only have gotten one enchanted book. I am sure some people are more lucky but so far I have not been even with an enchanted fishing rod with multiple enchantments.
As long as they keep the "easy" setting as "a sandbox game with some survival thrown in", I don't care about balance.
I really think that 'balance' is not necessary on "creative", "peaceful", and "easy".
As I keep 'catching' Rods enchanted with Unbreaking III and Lure III or Luck Of The Sea III, plus a Saddle, and a nametag; and I've not actually got a stack of fish yet, I'm going to say the percentages may be a little off.
Having now spent considerable time fishing, I'd say that it is slightly overpowered. I find that by killing one spider and punching one tree, I can make one fishing rod, and the odds are that in using up that fishing rod, I will get at least one Enchanted Fishing Rod and one Enchanted Book. The enchanted books are awesome, and rare enough that I don't feel spoiled by them. But the fact that I get a new or slightly used fishing rod, almost always enchanted, means I never have to craft another one.
Hence, slightly overpowered.
I must add that it doesn't ruin the gameplay for me. I enjoy collecting worn out leather boots and "repairing" them lol. The enchanted Rods, Bows and Books are reason enough for me to spend some downtime fishing. I like to fish near my farm, so the considerably large amount of time fishing uses up, serves multiple purposes.
EDIT: I should mention that I'm currently playing in the 13w38c snapshot.
I've going multiple bows with Power 4 and Flame 1 enchants now, a few nametags, and enough pufferfish to let me build an underwater metropolis. Overpowered? Maybe. But it's fun to get a really good item, and I think it fits pretty well with the type of game Minecraft is.

Any particular reason you're playing in w38 instead of 42?
Fishing as it is right now, isn't an enjoyable task so I think fishing up just about anything isn't overpowered. Besides, most of the things you can fish up aren't exactly very useful.
The only thing I would change is to make it impossible to get enchanted gear from fishing, only enchanted books, so that you do have to put a little effort to maintain your fishing and bowing activities. As it is I get enchanted rods (Unbreaking 3 is very common) faster than I can use them up. Hell I just reached level 39 and renamed the ultimate rod (Unbreaking 3 + Lure 3 + LotS 3) I caught few days ago.

I believe it is very balanced. There is a small chance of getting anything other than fish, and when that happens, it is almost "Junk". The items that are actually good are books, which require additional EXP to use. Fishing alone won't get much, but it is a nice addition to someone who is already far into their survival experience.

I like the fishing, even though I thought I wouldn't like fishing up stuff other than fish. If I get too much of anything, I just throw it in trash hole, and let it despawn there.
I think they should lower the rates slightly. Fishing is much easier now, with the particles telling you it'll be time to reel in soon. I think either the particles should be removed or the rates be lowered.
I feel like I might be on the wrong forum when people start talking about whether a Minecraft feature is over- or under powered.

Okay, and a few days in I'm knee deep in enchanted rods, I even got a maxed out (level 3 on lure, luck of the sea, and unbreaking) one. The bows and such aren't coming with such regularity; but I don't mind, I'll die IRL before my last rod breaks...
Underpowered. The only useful thing from it that you can't easily obtain otherwise are name tags. The time it takes to get anything rare from fishing is pretty substantial, and by the time you've created something like an automated fishing farm, you would have also made something more practical like an Ender farm in which you can get enchanted books in less than a minute each anyway.

Imagine if a regular diamond pickaxe regularly got you fortune enchanted diamond picks, diamond enchanted looting swords, iron armor pieces, glowstone, magic books, horse armor and pumpkins
That's the what the rod is.
