So you can now find books with stuff like Smite and Protection on them and if you enchant a sword with it, it gets both enchantments instead of just the smite. Does anyone know if the Protection enchant on a sword actually does anything or is it just dead weight that drives the repair cost up?

Last time I checked if you try to put a book with smite and protection on a sword it will only put smite on the sword. Were you in creative when you tried to put the book on the sword?
It is NOT dead weight. It only applies the enchntment that is obtainable in survival mode with that object. So, if you have, say, sharpness 3, power 2, and unbreaking 2 on a book, and you try to apply it to a sword, you would get sharpness 2 on the sword. A bowwould get power 2 and a tool unbreaking 2. However, all of the items would get unbreaking because it is applicable to weapons with an anvil as well as tools.
