So, did anyone get a really big smile (and perhaps history class flashbacks) when they saw what Mojang did with the flowers, or in particular, the tulips and alliums? For unmodded servers, I can see them being the new roses in terms of trading. Very clever! I myself am searching long and hard for enough to form vast hanging gardens on survival! Others' thoughts?
(For those of you who aren't aware, during the 1600s different varieties of tulips were so highly coveted and so valuable in trade in the European world that lives were lost over them. A field of tulips at the time indicated that the owners were ridiculously wealthy. Alliums, aka the onions, garlics, and chives, were also a hot commodity, but instead among North American native tribes. Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania )
I wouldn't make any sort of assumption about the rarity or lack thereof for any item in the game until at least the pre-release candidates for 1.7 come out. That is definitely the case for these tulips and/or roses.
Antique trading in on-line games is indeed an interesting phenomena... just ask those who are Runescape players what they think of party hats. Regardless, Minecraft doesn't seem like a game that lends itself very well to the antiquarian trade. Antiques in this case are items which can only be destroyed, lost, or removed and never added or created in the game (or found from resources.... diamonds aren't antiques but chainmail armor could have been on some servers).
I understand why you would think that would be the case here.... but be patient. I think Jeb has something in mind and the final word has not possibly been said yet..

I don't think I'll be going out of my way to hoard them but interesting anyway.
