This is why. I always liked that how in worlds it's completly random biomes all over the place. Yes, this way it's more 'realistic' in a way, and I say that only because minecraft isn't very realistic in the first place but, having the biomes laid out the way they are now kinda ruins the game for me. This is beacuse for the fact that now I can't have my sand quarry next to say my jungle house or mountain home. I created probably 8 different worlds and haven't found a desert, a clay biome or ever a Mega Taiga which is what I'm dying to find. Is this bad luck? Probably. But I'm not enjoying how I have to travel through multiple biomes to get to say a desert from a snow biome and I'm not one for nether traveling. That's just me
I like the world generation for the most part, but it's true that it's a problem for the single player who wants to see something specific. The answer, I think, is to have a button at world generation that says "which biome would you like to start out in?"

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
My only complaint (and it's more of an inconvenience to me, really) is that with all the new biomes and the rarity of some of them, as well as some things like horses, it makes getting to and from those places extremely hard and/or monotonous. I have a world i started and I didn't find horses for something like 2500 blocks, so It's going to be a huge pain to get those horses back to my base, even if I go through the nether with them (although that'll make it a little easier).
The nearest jungle to me is nearly 5000 blocks away (I need a kitty!) and the nearest Ice Spikes biome with the new ice blocks is --i have no idea how many blocks away, but lots and lots. The only mod I ever use religiously is Rei's Minimap but can't with the snapshots, obviously. If there's anything that should be implemented into vanilla, it's something like that, especialy the way the world is spread out now. Yes, I know we have mapping ability but they're not useful for traveling out 1000s of blocks. I need waypoints, baby!!
I get lost in real life really easy, and in Minecraft, I'm no better. LOL
When some people started complaining some time ago about how wierd some transitions or biome placement were i said that part of the randomness of the biome placement adds some fun and some expectation, makes you wonder what you are going to find next to certain biome.
Now you can simply see the layout and see whats going to be around you pointing the biomes you want or need to go and the ones you dont want or need to go. If you need certain resource and you are at X biome you know where to go, where to find it by thinking the pattern on the current biome generation. That kinda kills the exploring aspect of the game, the expectation, the chances to get certain biome you like next to other, the emotion to discover new places... it makes the terrain generation pretty much predictable and boring.
Although i want to say that i really like the new biomes but not how they are placed. We should be able to chose if you want this kind of generation or the random generation, maybe chose between the random generation with the new biomes. I made a pole about this on a post of mine but as always nobody seems to pay much antention to it.
this is a link of my pole, ill apreciate it if you add it in your main post so people vote and give their opinion about it.

Try a new seed? My wife was going through seeds the other night to start a new survival world in the snapshot; she spawned in one, turned her head and was standing next to a family of donkeys. She jotted down the coordinates and went on her way. Later she deleted that world and started a new one.
Anyways 2500 blocks on a horse is a relatively short and risk free journey. Let's not forget that often times our difficulties in minecraft are directly related to our play styles. Since the inception of horses I have never gone far from my base without a saddle and lead. I had been saving them up from dungeons because I never rode pigs.

Why do we need this choice? You don't get to choose to start on the star world board in super mario world why should you get to make choices about every single aspect of minecraft? Regardless; you get the choice in minecraft: find a spot in your world with easy access to everything you need.

Because Minecraft is a sandbox game and you should be able to do whatever you want. Why shouldn't we need this choice?

Giving the user choices means that the user has some freedom to decide on how he likes thing. You cant compare SMW with MC man, totally different gamme even in genre and not to mention the time... I want to be free to choose! this way everybody can be happy and have what they want without disturbing the "other side".
Lets put it this way: You want to meet a friend for dinner and since its his birth day, your friend wants to eat a big piece of stake with a good wine. Ok, if you are vegan and your friend eats meat you wont go to a vegan restaurant or one that doesnt has any vegan food for you.? you would go to a restaurant where you can chose either of them.
Ok, so both of you arrive to the restaurant where you should be able to chose your vegan food and your friend his meat of choice (pork, lamb, cow or w/e) and cooked how he likes it (dry like a boot sole, juicy or half cooked) with red wine. Imagine how uncomfortable it could be for your friend not be able to eat what he likes to eat and how he likes to eat it with the beverage of his choice...
People take a lot of choices EVERYDAY and if they dont have what they like/want/need, they dont feel right, well, im not feeling right with this new world generation and id like tobe able to chose and not to feel that im being pushed to it.
2500 blocks isn't impossibly far no, but there's very tall mountains and bodies of water in the way, so with a horse, makes it that much harder for me to not get lost lol I have a tendency not to build near spawn, so a compass is never in my inventory. That's my weak spot with this game; getting lost and my biggest flaw is never hunkering down near spawn. I have a hard enough time with the existing biomes but I've been taking advantage of the /tp command, although it feels silly to keep a notepad open with coordinates written on it. and it feels cheaty using it.
Lest we forget that Minecraft, despite being a sandbox, is still a game. Even sandbox games have rules and restrictions. If you don't want the restrictions then there is creative mode for you to fly around in and explore with no restriction. But survival mode is about thriving; of which exploring is required.
I am okay with choices for land generation, but not finite very detailed choices. I think that because survival mode is supposed to present some form of challenge (dependent on play style) that you shouldn't be able to generate everything you could possibly need right next to your spawn point....
Also, I have been a vegetarian nearly my entire life and I have never had an issue with eating with anyone where we were at a place someone couldn't find something to enjoy. My wife isn't even a vegetarian....
I think it would be pretty nifty to have a dropdown menu for starting biome, for the ones it usually spawns you in anyways, not like mushroom biome or an alternate dimension or anything.
It would also help for testing things, like back when they added ocelots and you wanted to practice catching them.

One of the bests aspects of Minecraft is the freedom, freedom, restricting the biome generation like that would take some freedom that the user has. Creative is totally different from survival and it doesnt really gives you more freedom than infinite blocks to build, it doesnt has the motivation to explore the souroundings and if the biome placement is predictable it takes part of that too and makes landscape kinda repetitive.
Well, im not asking to get the world generation that we had before, im asking just to have an option to generate my world as it used to be and let other people choose the new layout if they want and this wont restrict anybody. Its not that i want certain resource next to my spawn in fact i like be expectant of whats going to be next to a plain, the mountain the ocean or w/e biome you are and not to say: "ok, im in the desert, now i can be near a savanah or a plain or x biome" In fact if you want to get certain resource by knowing the layout you might predict where to find it so its not really exploring its just going and get it.
On my side things are the oposite, my girlfriend doesnt eats meat and we had some issues sometimes.. but we tend to go to places both of us can eat what we like.

The majority of the community has complained since I started playing that the generation was too random and too boring; the changes were made to it for the better and I doubt it will go back. Plus you have an option to play with the old generator; you can select version 1.6.2 from the versions drop down in the launcher.

Want to play Minecraft SSP like Spaceboot1? Try my modpack, all mods made by me, Spaceboot1!

And really you bad. You need to think in the landscape. It's just horrible to have a Jungle next to a Desert and a Taiga. That makes you eye bleed.
Woah woah!
