So, I recently started playing MC again. I'd heard a bit of mumbling about the zombie spawning being changed, but really hadn't been paying attention since I'd been distracted by something else for a while (coughKerbalSpaceProgramcough).
Anyway, I found my MC install, fired it up, updated and started playing. Got things up and running and really didn't see that much difference in the monster spawns. I finally realized that I needed to update the launcher and I was still playing 1.5. So I downloaded the new launcher fired up one 1.6.2 and met my first zombie horde.
Now, I'm not complaining it was too hard. It wasn't. My house, through an accident of design (a small fence and gate around the front door to keep the creepers at bay) was not only completely immune to the zombie invasion, but it also provided me with a completely safe way to stab them all in the face at no risk to myself.
This wasn't some carefully designed exotic material intensive zombie proof doom fortress, it used no resource other than wood and cobble, and it wasn't even built with the horde in mind.
It was trivially easy to defeat the lot of them. That isn't the problem. The problem is that even before I finished stabbing them all I was getting bored. I've been playing MC since the 0,0 chunk spawn bug was a thing, throwing up a quick hidey-hole that lets me hold off the most ravening horde of shamblers in perfect safety isn't the problem, the problem is that once I've done that I might as well just put something heavy on my attack button and go read a book.
Difficult isn't a design flaw. Tedious is.
Is there a mod that fixes this? I know I could just "Nope" out to passive mode when I get bored of dealing with them, but that kinda breaks flow. I've done a little searching but haven't found anything. Thanks!
Totally agree with you and loved reading this. Thanks!

They made zombies incredibly tedious.. It's pretty much impossible to keep a village alive now, considering their tracking is buggy, making unbelievable amounts of lag.
I agree with you 100%. This change didn't make anything more difficult, it made it very annoying.
I'm sure a mod exists that changes the zombie AI back to how it was in 1.5.2. I haven't seen one myself yet as I've never went looking. I'm still playing 1.5.2 happily while I wait for some mods I enjoy using to update. If/when you do find that mod I'd be grateful if you let me know of it.

Due to my snarky and sarcastic personality I can easily be seen as a jerk. If I've offended you in any way it was likely unintended.

Probably. There's a mod for nearly everything.
To tell you the truth, I'm not the kill everything type of person, but it is probably VERY annoying.
Tedium as a game mechanic is perfectly acceptable when there's a purpose behind it.. Minecraft is full of tedious tasks but most if not all of them have a "reward" of some sort at the end.. In this case, there is no purpose or reward. This is just one more example (along with things like the changes to the boat/minecart controls), that programmers are in charge of MC now and not game developers. Game developers constantly ask themselves if a feature makes the game more or less fun. They always put the "fun factor" first. Programmers do not. It's a different mindset and one of the reasons why most game companies have Producers in charge of a game as they're supposed to be responsible for ensuring programmers don't write "bad" features.
Ya just wait till you get 50 hours on the chunk and the regional difficulity kicks in and you have zombie hords with armor backed by skeletons and enchanted bows.
O ya. Annoying has not begun yet.
On the bright side the loot coming out of my grinder has never been better.
Didn't mojang at the LAST minecon agree that a update to combat was neccesary? I'd say improving zombies would be a start. They don't have to be runner zombies by any means, at least make them stumble, claw, bite or crawl. Some kind of variance to them instead of walking towards you and flinging their arms up. Changing spawning and damage values only goes so far if the mob itself isn't hard to kill.
I do have to ask one thing. Do you think it could possibly have been boring because you were standing in one spot in a place that posed no risk or challenge and slowly punched them to death? Last time I checked you could do that in any version that had Zombies, and last time I checked being in a situation with no risk is going to become boring no matter what.
All I'm saying is you should grab an Iron Sword and a Bow, head outside at night to some open ground and actually try some real night combat instead of saying the game is boring because you abused game mechanics.

The fact that you sit behind your fence to kill the zombies is what is making it seem like the game is boring, It isn't suppose to be played that way. There is no mod that can fix it, the whole point was to make it harder to survive at night. Some people like the challenge of fighting zombies and almost dying. If you don't want to hear all those zombies outside your door you might want to invest in making a few iron goloms then hooking them up to a lead and a fence post. You claimed the game is boring when you played it in a way that it isn't intended to play and that's not anyones fault but your own.

Oh yeah, cause zombie spawners are the height of difficulty challenge? When did tactical thought become "abuse"?
His thesis point is that the zombies are not actually "difficult", just annoying, and reduce gameplay, not enhancing it. You either have to do as he has done- wall them off so that they aren't a threat-, or die by zombie horde, regardless of your skill or abilities.
What they did zombies would have been a somewhat buggy MOD, but it never should've been made the base game. You see the difference, right? As a mod, you choose to face the horde, as the base game, your choice has been taken away, making the game less playable.

Wait, your solution for boredom is for him to take less action? Some people do like it, while most are finding it tedious, boring, and make the game less playable. SOME people could have just gotten a mod to make the game more grinding if that's what they wanted.
Even if I decided to face the horde, it doesn't change that the zombies have very limited variety and my attacks are limited to two options: sword or bow. I'd just be running backwards slapping zombies with a sword using the same attack over and over again. I'd still be bored out of my skull. The combat in this game is in no way interesting enough to become a core gameplay element.
I could build an elaborate array of traps and watch them all stumble in and get killed, but I already own Orcs Must Die!

Having 3 options (sword, bow, and potion) is not Zombie exclusive. You have to fight all mobs basically the same way, except with melee attacks on ranged mobs you run towards them instead of backpedal. Furthermore this is another issue that is not Zombie exclusive, nor is it something new. Combat has been like this since the first hostile mob was added. Furthermore, where was it ever said that combat was a core gameplay element? This game is a sandbox building/adventure game with light combat. Fighting was never the primary focus.
I'm not saying it couldn't be improved but it is way more helpful to go to the Suggestions section and talk about how to improve it, rather than merely state that it isn't great while acting like combat suddenly broke with the last update.

Dual wielding would be fun, as would spears and two-handed weapons. Oh, and different kinds of bows, and maybe crossbows. I wouldn't mind some primeval form of pistol, either - maybe a flintlock or a four-shot revolver with some interesting reload mechanic. The balance would be that bullets are expensive to produce, requiring gunpowder and iron...
The combat in this game is in no way interesting enough to become a core gameplay element.
This. And yet we still have people clamoring for more combat-based "difficulty", and game developers who seem to think that simple stat changes and throwing more mobs at the player will somehow make the game more fun, when combat with most mobs in the game is boring to begin with (the one exception I can think of being Ghasts; they're actually quite fun to hunt).

Yeah, the ghasts are fun because they require SKILL to hunt, not power. Yeah, having an enchanted bow is helpful, but it's about being a more cunning hunter. You don't just mindlessly hack or shoot at a ghast, because you know the incoming fireball is on its way. You move, reestablish your aim, and take your shots when and where you can.
The other thing is that ghasts aren't everywhere, so there's generally time to come down off of it, and you're choosing to go where they are. There's nothing to do as far as the horde goes aside from either embracing the grind, or getting rid of the exploration portion of the game as quickly as possible, and god help you if one spawn who is wearing armor, because he can still spawn zombies, and daylights isn't an issue anymore.
and the earlier pic of a villager surrounded by glass to keep it from the zombies only proves the point about villagers. They can't survive, save if you remove everything that makes them a villager.
