Wait, so how are you even supposed to fish without that sound? Granted, there were red herring sounds fairly often, but it was the only visible sign to say you needed to reel in.
According to the wiki, it's not really that different: Boats are controlled by the player's movement keys.
The only changes I saw to boat mechanics is that they will now move in the direction you're facing. Just don't look around when you're riding a boat.
Boat controls were changed? Why? The new scheme is (from what I hear) rather inferior. Why on earth would Mojang implement a worse system when a good one was already in place?
(Then again, Mojang tends to do this. The cauldron brewing potion mechanic is by and far away superior to brewing stands, and adding structures did not balance out the predictability of the new terrain generator over the old one.)

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Boat controls were changed? Why? The new scheme is (from what I hear) rather inferior. Why on earth would Mojang implement a worse system when a good one was already in place?
Because Mojang stopped listening to the community and started listening to a select group of people that serve as nothing more than an echo chamber for their bad ideas. Instead of listening to what the gamers have to say they go on Reddit and insult and demean anyone who disagrees with their decisions.

Or quite frankly just ignore them; then decide to respond in the usual smart-alecky tone.

I still hear the splash when I fish. What are you talking about?
Not the initial splash, but when a fish bites and you reel in with the right mouse button. I still hear the bobber hitting the water. But there is a distinct dunk sound. It is good, especially on a PvP server cause you can pan around freely to keep our eye on any other boats or players coming and gives you time to flee. ... Or equip to fight, which ever you prefer.

I know you were still able to look freely with your mouse and it still effected the steering in the pre 1.6 update, the problem is the handling. By removing left and right keyboard controls and the reverse, which you could change direction quickly. Now, it's like a boat with no power steering and 'blinders' on. By only being able to use the "W" key, and the mouse to steer, the boat is very sluggishly responsive. Since you have to move forward to change direction in the boat, your momentum builds too fast, too quickly and is too high to be comfortable to steer with your mouse without the fear of crashing. Or wonder what is going on beyond your peripheral, If your being spotted, or not because your too busy paying attention to what's coming in front of you. Possible getting an arrow in your back in the process or your boat is suddenly destroyed because you didn't notice someone coming and they rammed you on purpose and there goes your haul of diamonds or gold. All because of bad controls.
Also, to be honest. I quit playing. I haven't played for about a week now cause the changes are just too frustrating and I don't want to be exposed like that. I haven't even bothered looking for zombies after the update cause the continuing spawning for reinforcements sounds plain obnoxious. There is a map, specifically for zombie hordes, that those mobs exclusively overrun the entire world in the server I use. If I wanted to fight a zombie horde I would play that particular map.
... can´t believe people are still complaining about that Zombie-Issue. If you don´t want to adapt to the changes use a mod or use the older version or do whatever. There are numerous ways to get around that.
Now for the boat mechanics: I´d like to see this changed back to what it was before, too. Now it´s more "realistic" (if that word even makes sense in such a game), because it´s closer to what boats actually behave like. Still it makes travelling rivers almost impossible or you have to be super-slow and extra-careful - like with real boats. I´ve been working on a huge river as a long-range travel route, extended an existing one and broadened it here and there. Connected it to others. That was fun to use and faster than walking. Now it´s no fun anymore and i use boats only for crossing oceans in a straight line not even trying to evade lilypads, i just take some extra boats with me. I guess i could also just quit and be very angry with Mojang. But there a one or two other aspects about MC i like....
As I said before, on single-player, it would not be as much of an issue cause I would have all the time in the world to handle those problems the way I choose, but on a custom PvP server map that updated to 1.6 and one that I have grown accustomed and would not want to leave. They stated they would continue to fix bugs and not revert back to an older version after I asked if they might consider. I'm not able to get around what the developer chose.
But yes, I do agree, the boat aspect due to the new mechanic as appose to the old one you could exploit faster travel is just not fun anymore.
i just avoid large bodies of water in MC cause now their is no nice way to get across
I just use nether portals to cross oceans and such
oceans and seas are a waste of space, their is nothing of interest in them or above them and fishing can be done in small rivers and lakes
and now boats handle like a drunk rhino
Same applies to this one. Unfortunately Nether portals are not readily available to craft by normal means in this server and requires some prerequisites to 'purchase'.
I may have to change my strategy to reduce my time needed to have to rely on using the ocean for a safe hideout and store my valuables, so I can just be on land and only use boats if I absolutely must.
Still, I wish to have more people vote and hope to have one of the Mojang Team see this.
they removed that sound in fishing too? I almost never fish but when I do I rely on that sound to know when I got a bite. Now there's even less of a reason to fish.
As for the boats, trying to ride down a winding river with a few narrow parts is nearly impossible without crashing a few times. "Improved" is simply an unnecessary nerf to boat controls. Might as well just walk/swim now...

Due to my snarky and sarcastic personality I can easily be seen as a jerk. If I've offended you in any way it was likely unintended.
there wasn't even a good reason to change it, but they did anyway! someone needs to convince Dinnerbone to fix this! it ruins so many fun things about the game like boat racing and docks
Guys guys, put down your pitchforks and torches. Yes, the boat mechanics are pretty bad, but the reason they changed it wasn't completely unreasonable. They wanted the boat movement mechanics to be the same as the horse movement mechanics so that everything would be more uniform. However, because "strafing" left and right on boats doesn't exactly make sense, they just took that out. So yeah. They didn't change it for no reason like you guys said, but I still agree that it still needs changing.
Having to turn around backwards to slow the boat down is stupid. In RL if you wanted to slow a boat down you row in reverse, not get out of your seat turn around and start rowing in the opposite direction.
Are you telling me that in order to stop a horse in this game, you have to sit on it backwards and say "giddyup"?
Oh, and the A and D keys were used to turn the boat, not strafe it.
I was referring to the horse mechanics - like, you use A and D to strafe on a horse.
I think that they removed everything about the horse movement except the going forwards part. ...Man, even saying that sounds stupid. Okay, you guys win, I can't defend mojang anymore.
