This. Just one dirt block in front when the villagers are inside. Unless they changed it, you can still create villagers from zombi villagers underground. You can also shove villagers into the neither.
I agree with the OP completely. Changes like these do not make the game harder, they just make it unfun. The zombie multiplication feature is ridiculous and impractical. A larger detection range won't make the game any harder, it will just make a larger range of zombies wander over to you to be killed.

Splash potions of healing will be much more useful if it stays like this! I don't see a huge problem, most of you guys just use a bed to pass the night anyway right? I would recommend making sight range and additional zombie spawning scale with difficulty.
Those complaining about zombies at night while builing.. here's one word for you: BED..
...yes, but what about SMP? I doubt everyone would sleep at the same time.

95% of teens would scream if Justin Beiber was about to jump of the top of the Empire State Building. If you are in the 5% that would grab a seat and some popcorn and yell JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! post this into your sig.
Then build/flatten landscape at night.. but i still agree with the range these moaning green things with clothes have.. in the spanshot i tried to makea flatlands survival map and tried surviving.. first night was a nightmare.. i was looking at about 13 zombie eyes staring at me while they get closer and closer.. maybe the zombies shouldn't have long ranged sight but have a good sense of smell.. like they smell your blood and are longing for the taste of it kinda thing.. they could lock on to your scent trail, which is where you have walked and have a 50/50% chance of either going on the scent trail towards you or accidentally go the other way and walk further away along the scent trail..
Ha these snapshots are so awful. If any of this UltraxXxHardcore junk makes it into 1.6 I'm only going to be playing the game for the mods alone, and Might not even bother playing SSP past 1.5.1, not like it's worth playing on most servers anyways.
I remember when the hardest parts about minecraft were creepers and avoiding lava. It's nice to have a few features to up the difficulty, but this one is just plain stupid. No difficulty buff should be added when it takes fun out of the game for new/inexperienced players, or any player at all for that matter.

I think they only have increaced range against players, not villagers.
Whether they only increased the range to against players or both players and villagers seems immaterial since if you happen to be in a village, all of those zomberts will arrive and agro on the village anyway... and actually I'm pretty sure they are agroing on the village from 50m+ away.
This change coupled with the "fixed" zombie sieges has essentially destroyed the village mechanic. Sure I can build walls, but that doesn't help the sieges.
I'm probably going to abandon my village/base (bad idea to dual purpose it, I know, but... I was a noob) and just use zombie villagers from a zombie spawner to create a bazzar of useful trades underground in a well lit area.
Why are we complaining about zombies getting a buff. This community. Game gets harder people get mad. Game gets easy and people want a harder game. These New zombies are making the game a CHALLENGE. which is what people want. If you don't want to deal with them then set it to peaceful. All the changes that are being made are making the game a challenge and overall more fun. The agro range being bumped is good. It means that you cant just sit 32 blocks away and snipe them with a bow without them moving. now you actually have to be good with the bow in order to kill them. And to hit them with a sword also has its consequences. Why does it need some kind of logic. We all use the Minecraft is a game. No need for it to be realistic. But yet when they do something like this everyone gets mad about it. So please stop complaining.
A very simple concept can be extrapolated from your post. Make this a server.props option... "zombies.agro.from.distance=(true|false)" and "zombie.sieges=(true|false)"
I want to keep the mob spawning behavior for skeletons, creepers, spiders, etc.. and I want the difficulty setting on "hard", but I'd like to be able to build (and dwell in) a village without constantly replacing doors and dealing with zombie sieges or masses of agro zombies from half way across the map.
Zombies were too easy, craft stone swords instead of irons if you dont want to waste irons.
They adding Left 4 Dead to minecraft, to make zombies more threatening than ever.
Have you played it before? It's nice with the sudden horde, and killing everything, oh and I hate boomers.
Well games aren't meant to be realistic, did you played Team Fortress 2? How did the soldier can rocket jump? How did the engineers makes stuff less than seconds? How did you survived more than 2 shots on the head?
But true, I hate my village getting rampaged by zombies on a night, but goodness I have two iron golems defending the village. For early village, it's best to stay away from the village till you get to craft a bed to skip the night.

Bed? Skip the night? SMP? Not going to happen...
Golems? My village is easily 160 x 160 if not larger at this point and the 5 golems I have are never in the right place at the right time to defend it, so the exercise is basically replacing doors every other night... Very annoying and UN FUN. Walls/Fences or not...
What's the function of a bed then? Should mojang remove beds now, because it has no function rather than as decor?
Well, if you that troubled for zombies and wanted to stay the night, turn to peaceful mode, then change to hard mode again on the morning if you want to avoid your nightly exercise. Light up the village with torches, it wasn't that hard. Chop off some woods for charcoal, then make it as torches if you want to be efficient rather than using the coals.

Your suggestions indicate a facile analysis at best...
In multiplayer survival, difficulty is set on the server and not on the client... and yes, unless one is alone on the server or can achieve concensus that all players get to bed, the bed is just for setting your respawn point.
as for lighting the village, it does not stop the zombie siege at all. It also does not prevent zombies from 50 blocks away on unlit land from agroing. The latter can be mitigated by walls/fences, but that creates more design restrictions. i have a village near a river and the zombies can ford the river fine. so now i need to fence off the river? or i need to light up the entire 100+ blocks on the other side of the river? torches everywhere looks pretty crummy.
It was fine before. If you want this feature, cool... but make it a settable/tunable so each server can set it the way they want...
EDIT - and most importantly, this new mechanic is UN FUN... TEDIOUS... and it adds nothing to actual difficulty except for increasing the tedium...

I think what Mojang needs to do is to add more ways to customize difficulty, like being able to disable things such as zombies spawning more of them while keeping it on normal. I tend to build a lot of redstone contraptions on creative. I used to just punch away any zombies that got in my way, but now doing that spawns about a billion more zombies to annoy me. I can't turn it to peaceful mode because some of my machines use hostile mobs (like angry pigmen to track the player's location).
On the whole village matter, I once had a village that was completely walled off, had a massive population (about 10 iron golems), torches everywhere, and I even had a panic room with a half slab floor that had a few villagers in it. Want to know what happened? Zombies spawned inside the WALL of the panic room and killed all the villagers there. Then some more spawned in perfectly lit areas and went on a rampage around the town.
I actually have a decent idea that could bring this argument to a conclusion.
Just put it as a gamerule. People that want it can have the gamerule on, and those who don't can turn it off.
I like how no one listened.
As for the large agro range thing, that should be nerfed. We don't need zombies chasing people from 50 blocks away. Cut the buff in half or a fourth and I'll be happy.

I listened and agreed Though I suggested it should be a tunable in the server/client config props...
I know java, but I've not delved into the code at all... May even be a semi-simple mod to override the behaviour of the code to allow for a boolean and an integer (zombieSiege (yes|no), zombieAgroDistance (0-128)
Well...I haven't been playing my new world that much at all, but I jumped on today.
I read each snapshot, nothing about zombies...but they did change something:
When I first made this thread, they would attack you from max range, now there is a huge difference in agro range.
Better, but still not good.
Still nonsense random spawning of zombies...
Make 5-15% of zombies Angry Zombies (from FTB, not sure exact mod pack)...not this stupid ****.
I swear every single game is trying to promote the zombie fantasy. This game isn't supposed to be another DayZ or Project Zomboid.
I would have it so the zombies spawn normally, but as they scatter, they have a rare chance of making a loud yelling sound to attract more zombies within the set chunks. This will make it much more realistic and have it so we don't see falling zombies from the sky.
Also, they would only make the loud sound when a player attacks the zombie.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.

There's a difference between a hero and a champion. A champion overcomes threats, but a hero overcomes fears.
