What you're not getting is that food only heals a heart and a half each drumstick, and that's standing still. And like most of the crap dinnerbone has added to further make the game more impossible, this doesn't scale to difficulty. Even in easy if you eat bread until you have a full saturation you'll only heal 3.5 hearts standing still, the same as in hard or normal. Does that seem right to you?
That doesn't seem right to me either.
1.5 hearts per drumstick is no good.
Here's the benchmark that we need: if you have a full hunger bar, you should be able to regenerate most of your health before needing to eat again. You should be able to heal from 0.5 hearts up to 8.0 hearts before you lose a whole drumstick.
I think dinnerbone has good intentions, but he's made it clear many times that he has no game design skills. He can code, which is good, but he doesn't know gameplay. He doesn't even know how to play Minecraft; he died in the first five minutes of UHC.
Btw, I don't feel right voting in the poll because I don't have enough information, and I don't know if this is how it's going to be.

7.5 hearts per drumstick is a better value.
this i can get behind, as just full hunger you can still heal.
Honestly all this uhc stuff with dinnerbone saying it has nothing to do with it, right after a uhc match that he lost... idk, im not buying it.
>Dogbone dies in UHC in the first 5 minutes
>nerfs EVERYTHING
Coincidence? I think not.
This new hunger system just makes players have to mash the RMB twice as often, as if hunger wasn't an annoying enough mechanic as it was. It is the very definition of 'artificial difficulty'.
Hmm... This is the first proper explanation of the new mechanic that I've seen, since I don't play the snapshots (so thank you for that!)
I like the idea of regen 'costing' a bit, but it definitely looks like it's overdone at the moment. You don't want to spend all your time running away and hiding to eat. Of course, it's a snapshot, so it's likely to be tweaked more when they see how it really works in practice.
For super-hostile style maps, it'd be a nightmare...

Considering absolutely nothing that he changed was even used at the time he was killed, I'd say you are confabulating.
I like it, overall. Actually I thought it already worked that way. It might make sense to make the amount of hunger required for healing to take place, as well as how much hunger it "costs" for healing to depend on difficulty.
Easy could be "free" healing, with 8 or more drumsticks required to occur (pretty much as it was before).
Normal could be about 2 hearts a drumstick, and require 5 or more drumsticks of hunger to take place.
Hard could be pretty much what it is now.
I'd like if the new gamerule was toggle-able at world creation. Right now there isn't a way to create a hardcore world with regen disabled without editing tools.

No, I'd say regardless of whether the scenario surrounding his death involved the usage of any healing items, there's a definite correlation to UHC and the nerfs in the snapshot.
Namely the Gold apple recipe change.
You guys have to remember something: This is based off saturation value, it's not a fixed value every time. The amount of health you heal before your hunger drains is based off how good the food is you eat. If you're eating melons like I showed in the example, you're not going to heal much. Eating something like steak- which has a lot more saturation and is generally better- will cause you to heal more.
Infact, after testing, a single piece of steak will still keep your hunger filled longer enough to regen 100%
I was at one heart:
After eating 1 steak:
Obviously, steak is much better than Melon, like it's always been. This is not as bad as you guys think. Only if you're eating a terrible food.
This is kind of similar to pre-1.8 healing, in a way. Each food will restore a certain amount of hearts, not instant, but based off how much saturation the hunger bar is given. Food items like baked potato now heal 7.5 hearts. I'll get a list of how much everything heals soon.
I'm content with the original hunger system, not this one.
Why should I instantly digest my food while healing?
All this will do is make food have to be eaten in the middle of battle a ton, and that'll just suck.
I say, leave it as it was.
Potions are supposed to be the things that are used in the middle of battle; oh wait, potions were nerfed a ton.
I'm finding myself a bit less happy with each snapshot for this version.
First, they make horses, which, while I'm happy with new mobs, made railroads even more useless(I blame railroads for being a bit buggy and not being fast enough despite taking inhumane amounts of iron to make).
Second, they make horse armor and saddles uncraftable, screwing servers, especially vanilla servers, over, and if you die enough, no saddles or horse armor for you forever; in addition, they keep acting like horses are end-game transportation, but railroads are.
Third, wheat blocks, which I thought were going to be a wheat storage block, turned out to not be craftable back into 9 wheat.
Fourth, they have that stupid zombie multiplication thing.
Fifth, they nerfed the crap out of potions, particularly healing potions, and they made it harder to make healing potions, making them more useless.
Sixth, they mess with golden apples, which I'm not sure I'm fine with, but I might be; whatever the case it's still brought me to be a bit edgy with them.
And now, they screw up hunger...
Okay, this is even more awful than I thought.
Unless you have armor, plenty of weapon uses, and a lot of food, you're not able to do anything at night because every hit you take reduces your hunger.
The ridiculous number and range of zombies doesn't help either.
Dinnerbone is doing a fine job with this. I've tested this and its not annoying at all. Just make a farm and your set. "But I will need to eat more now! D:" Oh cry me a river... Its a small change that adds a little more difficulty in the game. And for you guys who will say "What abput the newly spawned people or the people who play on easy?" Well first of all, ANYONE can get food. The first day is not hard. Just make a dirt hut, kill a few animals, make some wood tools. Your set for the next 7 days. For those on easy. Just play on hard. You will get used to it. IMO I think it should either be hard or peaceful.
Well, I started a new hard world today with the new snapshot, and I personally didn't really notice, it is a tad harder to fight at night, but still not hard enough to merit me having anything except a stone sword... So as much as I like the idea, I don't think it really helped.
I guess I don't have a problem with it. It just changes the mechanic slightly.
But like most other tweaks/nerfs to the food and hunger system (like the bonemeal nerf), it really doesn't affect anything other than the difficulty of very early game.
I just don't understand why they keep trying to make the first 15 minutes in a new world more difficult (it's already the hardest part of the game), just to make the rest of the game more tedious and annoying (and not more difficult at all).
It really depends on what you do, In my opinion this is great if you PVP alot. However if you just build/mine all day it will get rather annoying. nevertheless these threads don't actually change or affect updates, I doubt mojang actually reads these threads, we are merely arguing about irrelevant things. This isn't a bad thing to be added, your health heals faster when you eat if I understand correctly. the old hunger wasn't realistic if you don't like it play on a lower difficulty and stop complaining.
That doesn't seem right to me either.

In the wiki it says it's 0.8 energy to sprint-jump(which was super consuming) and regen on one health is 3.0..
They should just make food fill you up less, if I were simply traveling this new food system would make no difference, what's the point?
Seriously, it's a really dumb system.
