When 1.5 came out, it was sooo hard to fight a skeleton! They have an amazing aim (it's IMPOSSIBLE to dodge their arrows) and when you try to kill them with your sword they spam arrows and knock you back and kill you! It's impossible to kill them in the water too! Anyone else think the same?
My suggestions
1) Try running left and right when rushing towards a skeleton. that'll make it harder for them to hit you.
2) Use a bow. There's a reason they're in the game you know
I like to play on hardcore, and when this change first came out, it killed me a lot xD It was even the end of me in my main hardcore world.... So I decided to come up with a few techniques to combat the new skele jerks.
1) As I'm sure all of you know already, skeles shoot in a pattern, and the first of my tips is to study and get to know this pattern. Know what they will do before they do it, it will save your life more than once.
2) Holding right mouse button with your sword out. It seems a lot of people have forgotten about this feature. Blocking will reduce the damage a skele does by half. Unfortunatly, the knockback still has some effect. Still, blocking when you know the skele is about shoot can really help, especially if you're low on life.
3) Don't run straight on, zig-zag as much as you can. Skeles do have better aim now, but that does not mean they cannot miss ;D If possible, try to take cover behind something and let the skele come to you, making him easy pickings.
4) Use a bow ;D ever heard of fight fire with fire? Imagine the arrows are the fire.
5) Set the difficulty to peaceful, something I don't even get the choice to do in hardcore xD Of course, this is the cowards way out ;P
Not that great of tips, but hey whatever. Hopefully it helps a few people out

I was playing on easy, and I can't count the times where I had 4 or 5 skeletons attack at once when in a cave; when the arrows hit it knocks me around like a pingpong ball. If I can't get my feet on the ground long enough to move I can't exactly fight back. Plus there have been a bunch of times I've been knocked off ledges that I wasn't really even close too because 1 or 2 attack at once and they knock you around so much, so fast, I go right over a ledge that's maybe 7 or 8 blocks away. Same thing with getting knocked into lava. They fire too fast, too many attack at once now. Same thing with creepers; quite often now I get hit by 4 or 5 creepers not 1 or 2, and this is on easy difficulty. There are ways to make skeletons more difficult if you want to make them that way, without making them just plain irritating. If you walk into the wrong situation, you just die... nothing you can really do about it. It's worse when you lose all your stuff to lava from this.
Message me yours if you want to trade in Animal Crossing: New Leaf or just need some friends to play with. I can also do Pokemon trades in Pokemon X(or Y), but I don't have any good stuff, and the only good stuff I have is not for trade so...send me requests anyway.

This helps skeletons to get their hardness they had back in Beta. Back in Beta, Skeletons were extremely dangerous. And what all the people said, the harder the game is, the more fun and intense it is.
I think the changes to the skeleton are great; all the mobs should have adjustments like this that make tactics important. The problem is that the old method of adding difficulty (more HP and damage) sorta multiplies the difficulty of this stuff. How much health and damage each mob has should be revisited when tactical behaviour and nuances are applied to them (such as for the skeleton). I don't know that revisiting the skeleton's health and damage means changing it, but I'd like to know that the devs have used some kind of reasonable method to determine that in the grand scheme, this setup makes for the most interesting challenge they can get from skeletons.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
I agree that they have been amped up too much. I wouldn't mingd the close range rapid fire, but the knockback is insane. On top of that, as some have mentioned, the spawn rate seems to be through the roof. I've grown used to seeing creeper herds on occasion in the wilds, but now I see them all the time and in caves to boot. I actually had 5 spawn inside a house of an npc village.
As if all this weren't enough, I think they reduced knockback on the player bow too. Look some challenge is fun and all, but this is a creative game for the most part. I used to almost always play on peaceful back in beta because the mob were so annoying. The more recent changes up until this point have all been for the better, but now it seems like were going backwards.
It's only impossible in the water.
How do you do it?
1) Try running left and right when rushing towards a skeleton. that'll make it harder for them to hit you.
2) Use a bow. There's a reason they're in the game you know
This is a good change imo.
The only time when they're a real problem is when their bow is enchanted with knockback. They become almost impossible to melee.

Run up to them and swing my sword, as usual...
