I loaded up a new world after updating to 1.5, expecting everything to be great and all of the bugs to be fixed. I was very wrong. I'm now getting noticeable lag even though the FPS counter is showing 90-130. I put Vsync on, and it's locked to 60 on the counter, but it plays like 30 or 40. Putting smooth lighting on minimum does nothing to change this. I got 170-210FPS on 1.4.7 with very smooth gameplay, but this completely ruins the update for me.
(Put the sentence in bold because I know people are going to suggest this to me even though I already tried it)
Edit: Turning smooth lighting completely off fixes the lag and raises my FPS a lot, but I should be able to play with regular smooth lighting on.
Also, redstone clocks create huge lag even if it's a 2 repeater design.
90-130 is actually great compared to what I got. I used to get 50-80, and with 1.5, I get 20-50. The game became stuttery and laggy. You are lucky to at least have triple digits.
It says triple digits but as I said in the OP, it doesn't feel like it. There's still some very noticeable lag, it seems like 30fps.
That's not good, I don't know what could be causing it. Also, I remember Dinnerbone once mentioned he would add something "better than OptiFine," but I do not see it. He made it worse instead.
yeah ever since 1.5 it been laging for me in 1.4.7 with optifine i got over 110 fps even without it i got atleast 60 fps or 50 and my computer has a i5 2400 now 30 fps.....
Welcome to the world of Java. Try updating your Java version and if its 32 bit, install 64 bit java alongside 32 bit java. Other then that I can't think of a way to help, sorry
You can download an optifine demo of some sort. Just search up "optifine" and you should find it. If you need help installing it, here you go.

Step #1: Go to .minecraft
Step #2: go to bin
Step #3: Get winrar or 7-zip and open minecraft.jar with 7-zip
Step #4: Delete Meta-INF in minecraft.jar
Step #5: Drag optifine classes (extracted) into the minecraft.jar
Step #6: Run minecraft.

The lightning is not 100% finished yet so don't complain that he made it worse. It will be fixed. But if you download the Optifine for 1.5 it fixes the lag
The lightning is not 100% finished yet so don't complain that he made it worse.
That seems like a ridiculous statement, since this is 1.5, an official release, not some snapshot.
Putting that aside, I am experiencing this issue as well. Goes from being smooth like it used to be to being noticibly choppy. I am also having weird issues with the way that sand falls/is placed now. Terraforming a desert on my SMP server is more annoying than usual because of the seemingly new glitchiness of the way sand falls.
Changing to Minimum or no lighting does not fix the lag issue. Some people aren't having this issue at all. I am using a Radeon 6970 with the latest drivers (13.1) in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Interested to know if anyone else with this issue is using AMD or NVIDIA graphics?
Edit: Also, I am seeing very weird edging glitches now, especially on dark blocks, like a few others have mentioned. This is even with smooth lighting turned off.

"would add something"
"would add"
That means they probably haven't even implemented whatever it is yet, so don't worry.
Either that or you mean "added".
so... i have a reason at least. you need to remember that the fps meter measures CLIENT frame rate and not the internal server. it is possible that your client is running fine but the server is slowed down for some reason. we are getting a 1.5.1 soon... we'll see if that fixes it
90-130 is actually great compared to what I got. I used to get 50-80, and with 1.5, I get 20-50. The game became stuttery and laggy. You are lucky to at least have triple digits.
You're lucky to get 20fps. In 1.4, I'd consider 20fps to be average (but very regularly got less than 10 as well), with 40+ being brilliant (but extremely rare). As of 1.5, I can't even get into a world. That said, this is with a fairly-high res texture pack, but nonetheless it's still very disappointing.
It says triple digits but as I said in the OP, it doesn't feel like it. There's still some very noticeable lag, it seems like 30fps.
I'd kill for 30fps. In fact, considering my average was around 20fps, I don't even notice a difference between 40fps and 100fps (got it once, it was amazing ), anything above 40fps seems about as smooth as possible (at least as far as i can tell).
Now we have got the new Restone update 1.5. I must assume that some are really glad to see the added redstone features, although I seldom use complicated restone stuff. Another "enhancement" is the lighting engine which seems to affect performance. I was happy with the old lighting except for the dark spots, which are still present.
I wonder if we are willing to sacrifice any performace for smoother lighting?
Even with smooth lighting OFF I get drop in PFS of at least 100, from 150 to to below 50. Even worse is that periodically there is some sort of choppy or stuttery preformance which is really anoying.
I am runnig MC on Linux and I can't blame the computer or the graph-card, I use the computer for rendering hi-res videos.
The solution can't be Optifine, the program should run on most computers without plugins.
What options do we have? Do we downgrade until this is fixed and hope that servers will continue with 1.4.7 or do we have to live with this laggy and stuttery perfomance?
Framerate has been getting steadily worse. This is an official release and it's cutting peoples' framerates in half. Stop making excuses for Mojang, there's no excuse for THAT.
By the way it's lighting, not lightning.
And to the people who say "waaah it's a free update stop complaining" that's another cop-out. Minecraft wasn't free, I paid for it. When updates start to break the game, that hinders the gameplay that I paid for. And since almost all servers are going to be updating to the latest patch, "not updating" is not a reasonable option. Yeah, go try to find servers running specific old patches. Good luck. AFAIK you can't even get older patches of MC through official channels, Mojang doesn't host older versions or make it easy or viable to play them. Thus they're wrecking people's framerates and there are few options, and they have every right to complain. If I release a free update that wrecks the game you paid for, you should be complaining.
During 1.4.7 I could run the game at the base 1GB of RAM and get 120+ FPS
With 1.5 and running the game at 4GB of RAM (computer has 16GB total) I'm getting about 30 FPS, 50 FPS if I turn off all smooth lighting.
No mods
Something is wrong with the update. Was the snapshot like this? I wonder if isn't how the game is now pulling textures.
Fail, fail, fail and fail.1.The lighting is not finished.Do you see black spots?--->The lighting is not finished.
2.You can fix your lag by downloading the Optifine.---->Again the game lags because the lighting is not optimized and not ready yet.
3.The white dots around the blocks-bug is fixed in 1.5.1.They are gonna relase it this or next week.So don't worry about that
The only fail here is them including broken lighting that effects the performance of the core game no matter what setting you put it on in a major release. I could understand if only the NEW lighting was broken ("Maximum"), but turning it off completely has no positive effect on framerate. So they essentially broke having good FPS rates in Minecraft, even on powerful machines such as the one I am running. This is not acceptable.
Also, I don't run mods on my minecraft. Just don't want to. I shouldn't have to mod my client with 3rd party mods to make it work correctly. Absolutely no desire to download "OptiFine". I will just wait until 1.5.1, hopefully everything is running smoother once that is released.

Maybe not worded like that though. Well, I tried to help
