In the snapshot today, the Beacon received a small buff. It now gives the beacon effects out to 51 blocks instead of the old 40. Not a huge buff, but at least he is looking into making it better.

For those interested in some of the specific buffs for each layer of the beacon pyramid added this is what I found:
(measured from the beacon block, does not include the beacon block itself)
I do hope they just make something else to create from nether stars. Like a magic wand, or something, idk.
Something slightly more mobile.
This! Craft a Nether Star with 2 sticks = Wand. The Wand would use XP to do different things, from attacking, to mining, to travel. Would be a nice way to add spells to the game.
.....they finally DO something to the Beacon......
.......and it adds a mere 10 blocks to the max range?
.....well. I've officially given up on ever finding a use for that idiotic thing. At least without it there's no reason to ever have to deal with the Wither boss.
Emerald shouldn't be that high really. With trading it becomes pretty easy to get. It would be logical to have it below gold.
I agree with this completely but if they did this I'm sure more than a few people would complain because they can't grasp the concept that they can sell excess wheat and such for emeralds and would complain that emeralds are naturally too rare to have them that low.

You can use it as a marker for where your base is. I mean it does send a giant beam of light up into the sky. Unless they changed that too. I've yet to even attempt to fight the wither so I have no idea.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.

Yeah, I've had that idea of using it just for the beam.... but it's SO not worth it. It can take a rather absurd amount of hours JUST to get the skulls necessary to fight the Wither, and on top of that, the Wither is still extremely broken; just a gear-check fight, nothing more, so that means building up a big set of super-enchanted diamond armor & sword/bow first.
I wanted to get a beacon just to at least experiment with a bit, but..... 30 hours of trying to get those accursed skulls, and how many do I have? ONE. Just..... one.

Sigh.
No offense, but if you put 30 hours into it and only got 1, your doing something wrong. I usually get 2-3 an hour with Looting III and a decent area to spawn them.

Tried that. Big fort, Looting 3 sword.... no effect. Id be interested to know just HOW MANY Wither Skeletons I've killed by now, because the number must be pretty absurd at this point. Hell, I even use speed potions so I can zoom from one to the next and chew through them that much faster.
.....on the plus side, I sure have alot of coal and bones from them.

You guys are lucky, I get like two WS that spawn and thats it. And looting doesnt affect head drop rates... But, I think they need to let the Wither skeleton spawn more frequently or in more places, at least make the Wither fight more gainable.

No, you just need to find a good area for them to spawn. My Fortress has 4 intersections I use, about 35 blocks from each other in a square. When i run to one, ill have 3-4 skellies, i kill them and run to the next one. Ill kill about 10 in a minute or so with this method. Also, Looting DOES increase the drop rate, i think Looting III puts the skull drop at 3%? Ill have to look it up, but im certain it increases the drop rate.

You need to "condition" your hunting ground. Finding a fort inside a lava lake decreases the spawn rates of ghasts & pigmen. The skeletons can't spawn in every part of the nether fortresses and chances are if you have a big one you won't want to go to every part of the fortress during a trip. A good way to lower the spawnable area is to half slab the fort. You'll want to half slab the roof of the fort, find the area you want to hunt in, and half slab all of the fort outside that area. Also if there are netherrack structures around the fort (~100m radius) it wouldn't go without harm to half slab those as well. After you have your spawnable area laid out you'll want to increase the spawnable areas, this can be done simply by destroying walls and creating new walls. Let's say you have 2 paths in close proximity to eachother you'll want to tear down the walls and join the 2 together use a building block [ex; cobble]. Another good tip is on the paths that don't have a roof or walls you'll want to tear down the 1 tall netherbrick "railing" and place a block extending one block away then a fence [preferably cobble walls]. You'll want to go through disabling blaze spawners in your spawnable area [this can be achieved by creating 9x9x2 box around the spawner]. There is a "max mob count" so you'll want to kill the blazes while hunting to keep the spawns changing. Also note that wither skeletons spawn at light level 7 or below so if a blaze catches a block on fire it would be smart to take the time to put that fire out.

Playing Minecraft since [Friday, March 19, 2010, 9:20:21 PM] (First indev world save)
(measured from the beacon block, does not include the beacon block itself)
1 Layer: 20 blocks radius (old radius:16)
2 layers: 30 blocks (old: 25)
3 layers: 40 blocks (old:32)
4 layers: 50 blocks (old:40)
Conclusion: Beacons now have a 25% greater range than before.
I like the idea
