I do want to have to. Minecraft is a sandbox game so I can play as I want, and I don't want it to be way too challenging as I'm terrible at games like that.
I doubt you'll have a bed or at the least a bow and sufficient arrows the first night of a new world. Maybe i'm wrong.
1. Be right back, I'm headdesking, then finding another desk to punch through. Minecraft is a survival game, at its core. You need food and tools to survive, but you can easily turn it into a construction simulator.
Yeah, they are too slow to merit such low damage. Honestly there damage needs to be much higher. Like 5 or 6. Sure they are slow still...but you had better not of mess up and get smacked in the face by them.
This is why I love Zombie Pigmen now, as long as they are still the same from a recent update. On hard they are extremely dangerous. Thus "derping" around in the nether is very unsafe. Which it should be. The player should never feel like they have 85%+ control over the world around them. Zombie Pigmen are there to be a constant threat. One mistake...and crap!
On the over world. It needs to be the same. Zombie P are far worse since they run and have swords. Thus Zombies just need to do more damage. The over world shouldn't be as intense as the Nether...but it should still be a threat to keep in mind.
Eh?
But the Nether is even more dramatically easy than the Overworld.... frankly, the place requires no effort or even armor right now, unless you're in a fort, and even then, not really that bad. (and yes, I mean on Hard difficulty)
The ghasts spawn hyper-slowly and shoot extremely easily dodged and slow moving bolts (and they have such low health themselves), and the zombie pigmen DONT EVER DO ANYTHING AT ALL. You have to specifically attack them before they'll do anything; as such, they're not a threat. And I dont think I've *ever* accidentally hit one. Or even seen anyone accidentally hit one (like in an LP or something). It's not like I'm going to run around randomly waving a pickaxe or sword in the air and crash into one while doing that, that doesnt make sense. There are Magma Cubes, but they're far too slow and nowhere near common enough to be an actual threat. Those guys would need to appear in large numbers in order to have any chance of doing damage.
I'm all for difficulty increases, but honestly, this snapshot did not quite manage it. Oh, the SKELETONS are a bit tougher, but only by so much... they did at least beat up my armor a decent amount. But the zombies..... are still just as weak as ever? I really dont understand what the change was to "make them stronger" they're still slow, dumb, and often coming at you one at a time, just like always. Havent seen increased damage from them, though, frankly, that would not make them harder either; you almost have to specifically TRY to get hit by these guys for them to ever damage you. They're just way, WAY too easy to avoid. Havent noticed any changes to the zombies at all, aside from the bit where they light you on fire if you get hit by them when they're burning, and again, that's likely to.... almost never, ever happen.
I like that Dinnerbone wants to make the game more challenging, but..... this isnt the first time he's said that, and it really has yet to happen. Which is kinda baffling, since it's pretty obvious as to the sorts of changes that really WOULD make it harder. The skeleton change here is the first thing that's made things even a bit harder in a long, long time. Sadly, those of us wanting a real challenge still must resort to mods in order to get it.

Which is why 1.5 will be the 'redstone' update and people like Keralis and gattcaAE play minecraft; because minecraft is solely about survival and nothing else.
2. I can be diamond clad by the first night.
I'd like to see you try.
I know 1.5 is the "Redstone Update", but that isn't a limit for them. See the "Pretty Scary Update". They can add what they think is right, whether it be a random block, nifty gimmick or something unrelated completely. But they at least have a track to go on.
And with the massive amount of caves, it really isn't that hard to dig down and find diamonds.

You act as if any layer under y=30-2 is hollow with the exception of cave walls and that y=8-1 is pure diamond ore.
I thought I acted like I think there's an abundance of caves in Minecraft, which makes it easier to find ores and other resources.
You must be mistaking me for somebody else.
Larger caves=more air. More air=less places to for ores to generate. Less places to for ores to generate=less ores. Less ores=less materials to be attained by them. Less materials=harder difficulty.
Do you understand this lofty concept?
Ever heard of people like ethoslab or vintagebeef? They have chests full of diamonds and iron and have full diamond tools, are they bored of minecraft? No, they actually do projects and have fun. If you don't think minecraft is fun, don't play it. You didn't think it was fun anyway, so it's not like you're at a loss.

Waiiiiiiit what?
Larger caves = more chances to find diamonds/other ores. A cave at layer 12 going for 10 blocks means a smaller chance of exposed diamonds. Exposed diamonds are the easiest to gather. A cave at layer 12 going for 100 blocks means more exposed diamonds.
Also, where did I say the game was not fun? Please provide your sources before saying things like this, thanks.

There's this thing in the options menu, see. A button. It allows one to select a difficulty level (or Peaceful). There are 3 of them: Easy, Normal, and Hard. There is a POINT to such a button being there, you see. Those of us that are more focused on building and mining and such, can choose "easy" or "normal". But those that choose "hard" do so for a reason: Because they want a CHALLENGE when it comes to surviving. And these difficulties do absolutely nothing to the world generator or anything like that. They're ENTIRELY about hostile mobs. And that's why Hard mode exists at all, in concept, is to be that option for those players that want that. If Minecraft was not intended to provide real challenge AT ALL, they wouldnt have bothered putting in those difficulty choices from the start.
The game could be made MUCH harder in HARD mode specifically, without ruining the experiences of anyone else, as those that dont want it that tough could choose normal or easy. The problem is that even on Hard, the game may as well be on Easy. For those of us that need a challenge, this can create boredom. And no, I dont care if guys like Etho and whatever can play it for hours on end with little challenge yet no boredom. They have a very, very different playstyle from some of us; I'm more of an adventurer than a builder, and I want to have some combat challenge in the game.... I could not play it like Etho does (and frankly, I cant watch his series either, just bores me to sleep, though I understand why others like his vids). The building and stuff is great and all, and sure, I do plenty of that, but me being the way I am, I really do want more challenge out of it. Give me harder mobs.... give me a reason to actually do something like, say, put up defensive walls, or traps or stuff. Give me a REASON to use all of those powerful weapon/armor enchants that, currently, have next to no purpose, as no enemy is strong enough to warrant their use (and no, the Wither does NOT count; it's a broken boss that ended up being a gear-check, and since the Beacon is worthless, it's a POINTLESS boss). And make the Nether truly DANGEROUS. All of these changes could be made without ruining anything for anyone, thanks to that magical button I mentioned.
The game is still fun, but as a rule, I need a challenge for a game to hold my attention past a certain point. In Minecraft, this means I have to keep a seperate heavily-modded world installed; when the vanilla game starts to lose my interest by being stupidly easy, I can at least go play that world and get some actual difficulty. The point of people complaining about the lack of difficulty here though, is the simple fact that this game really COULD be much more challenging WITHOUT any mods, and much more interesting for those that like such a thing.... but it just isnt. And it wouldnt exactly be hard to do such a change, but it never happens. Or it occaisionally TRIES to happen, but ends up being kinda half-assed, or having no noticable effect (like the zombie thing).
That others can play the game without a challenge and never get bored is fine. That's great. Good for them. But that does not work for everyone, simple as that, and the lack-of-difficulty complaints will keep up until something changes, likely. The sad part is that it's unlikely to change anytime soon.
EDIT: And no, caves being everywhere does not make getting ores "harder". I actually find diamonds dramatically faster by cave diving INSTEAD of strip-mining; when I try to do it via strip-mining, it is dull and tends to be slow. Strip-mining means you HAVE to dig through lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of blocks in random directions to MAYBE find some diamonds or whatever else. In caves, the stuff is just sticking out of the walls; I can traverse them MUUUUUUUUUCH faster than I could strip-mine an area, and thus I find and gather ores much, much faster. This playstyle of course wont work for everyone, but if you're used to caves and know what you're doing, it really is faster, by quite a bit.
No thanks, I like maps that are designed to be possible by mortal men. The best I managed on those was "see how many seconds I can live in a pitch black abyss of superfast creepers before hardcore mode deletes my world"

, Yes, that's probably what caused it- in earlier versions, the armour protection was based on durability, too. In fact if you are wearing heavily damaged armour it can make you take more damage (until something finally breaks).
yeah Enderman are my favourite mob to engage... sometimes I'll go to the end and run around for a few minutes angering Enderman and see if I can take them.
Usually I have to abort... or I die.
Does it make me seem old if the first thing that popped in my head to represent this was the BFG9000 from the original Doom and Doom II?
I was TOTALLY thinking about the BFG9000! I couldn't remember how rare it was! Yeah like that!

Well, the Nether has the highest possible damage threat. I guess is what I meant.
Yes I do agree skeletons feel good now. Zombies just need to be buffed, as do some other mobs. More difficulty tier-ing.
Something like... zombies should move faster on hard, do much more damage. Ect, Maybe they have a chance to poison you, or make you sick.

This is a good topic. I agree with the previous posters that super hard difficulty should be contained to Hard, but I think they probably should increase the rarity of certain ores. Also, wolves should be randomly hostile (same for zombie pigmen)!

With the diamond enchanted armor I'm rocking, I'm still invincible... Even after being spammed by like 3 skellies at once, falling down 40-50 block drops and getting sploded by creepers.
Well with improved AI they can attack you more efficiently
Still unneeded. The fact that they move slow and are restricted to melee is bad enough for them. And the Zombie changes in the last snapshot are not even close to being big enough to the point where their damage needs to be reduced. Zombies could deal 5 hearts, and there would be nothing wrong with that.
