I made an 100% efficient automatic furnace... It's not compact at all but it waits until it has 8 of an item before it passes them onto the furnace that way no coal is ever wasted. This in conjunction with a sorting system and you can have it sort, smelt, and store items for you but it takes up a LOT of room.

Coal isn't wasted because the speed it takes to smelt one item is slower than the hopper putting in more

I'm talking if you have stacks that are not divisible by 8. Unless you only put in stacks of 8,16,24,32,40,48,56,64 then you will always waste coal. I know coal is plentiful especially if you gather it with fortune 3 but there are those out there that are OCD and will only smelt in perfect stacks.

Ah but i usually smelt with wooden planks anyways alot less wasteful!
Well I actually don't care about size, I prefer having huge furnace rooms with a lot of them. That's why I made my own design with tracks letting me automatically smelt everything, and then restocking furnaces and retrieving smelted items from 10, 20 or 40 furnaces without walking 1 step. That's the good thing about not caring for space, I don't build a furnace room in a house expecting to look good, I built it wanting it to be useful.
Don't you also want a new hopper 2.0 that plays the whole game for you while you sleep too? Seriously, how lazy can a person be? :/
It's not being lazy but rather adding more possibilities to the game like the hopper did
you could simply say why don't you just pick up the items and sort it your self or put the stuff in the furnace yourself
because it's no fun and you want to be able to mess around with the game mechanics
This isn't any different than using a regular furnace...only instead of inserting both ingredients into the furnace you put them in chests, and take the product out of a chest instead of the furnace.
Really all you did was make a way to prime, or que, the ingredients.
If you put a looping rail with a storage cart of full of coal running over the back hoppers, then you have gotten a little bit more automatic. Add the same time of looping rail over the top hoppers and fill it with ingredients as you obtain them. Then make the bottom hoppers feed into storage carts to your storage room. Then you're as automatic as possible.

Actually it is different
because that means you can have like 20 stacks of sand in a chest and it will smelt them all and put them into your chest
I like them more when they can accomplish some level of item sorting.
I've got one that all it does is take the output of my tree farm and converts it into Charcoal. I need never look at it again and it'll happily continue producing fuel for me.

I have a problem my hopper wont put items into my furnace. It will take them out, can anyone give me a rundown on how to use it? I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to redstone.

Forever protecting Hyrule with the power of the Master Sword!
For those worried about coal consumption, you could make an automatic blaze farm (Which is probably one of the hardest mobs to make an automated farm for, but eh.) which feeds in blaze rods as fuel instead!

I'm the bard. Always will be. And no one EVER respects the bard.

Hopper to the side(pointing at furnace) = Fuel, Hopper above = Item to process, Hopper below removes items after they finish.

I'd really love that instead, just not sure how practical it is to ship items across the dimensions.

I would love that
Dinnerbone (or Jeb, but pretty sure it was Dinerbone) already stated that they would not do that.

I wanna make 1 of those one day

That's really helpful
