As you can see, feather is on weighted pressure plate. It activates redstone signal.
And here, I'm standing on weighted pressure plate. It doesn't activate.
This is meant more for map makers or redstone crazy people, People who just play minecraft wont really be affected by this. Think about command blocks, they're pretty illogical but only meant for map makers or server admins. Gold and Iron pressure plates are usefull to everyone, but mostly people like etho or map makers like vechs.

The point of the pressure plate is to detect a certain amount of items on the pressure plate, not the character, so...
