If the API automatically installs mods needed on servers, and uninstalls mods not needed, that would be amazing. Just saying. Then people wouldn't be affected when they want to play with friends
Exactly. If the mod api works like this, then who cares? Mods would take center stage, nobody needs regular updates after mc supposedly stops updating. Of course those who play vanilla singleplayer would take a little blow, but MC is much more fun in multiplayer
Oh god no! Why must the noobs alway interpret this one wrong. What he means is that minecraft will be run in a new way once the api is released. We all know how world of warcraft works with the content packs right? That's how minecraft would work! No more complaining people on the forums saying I HATE THE WITCHES REMOVE THEM IMMEDIATELY IT OFFENDS MY BELIEFE SYTUM I EEZ MORMUN!
Everything would be on a don't want it don't need it basis. And all of these "content packs" would be completely free!
Well as long as all the promised features are added, (And the lost and forgotten ones, like the sky dimension and the red dragon) I'll be happy. What do we do when we get bored of minecraft? Professional modders will steal roblox and recode the game, turning it into minecraft 2.
Someone who remembers and wants the red dragon (that Jeb has stated he doesn't want to make ). I thought I was the only one who wanted it still lol

Woah...you get that all out of your system? Good. World of Warcraft receives regular patch updates by Blizzard, the dev company. There's the addon system where players can make their own extensions, but they can't add anything into the game. So I suggest you calm down, get your facts straight before ranting here, and then post properly. Thanks.

Oh noooo because it was slightly hinted to because Jeb is a bit bored and hasn't had his coffee (WHICH HE HASN'T SPILT ON THE AUTHENTICATION SERVERS YET TODAY) that means Minecraft will end after 1.5/Mod API noooo
As someone who almost always plays with mods, I wouldn't mind if they stopped updating once they got their bugs fixed. And I'm sure the developers of the mod I mainly play would have no problem fixing vanilla bugs anyways.
P.S. Mod setup: TerraFirmaCraft, Smart Moving, and Rei's Minimap.
Well recently in an interveiw, Jeb talked about the future of Minecraft. He said all the features he wants to add can be added through mods. And how he wants to put development in the hands of the community. He was hinting that once Mod API is out anf fully fucntional, he wants to stop developing Minecraft.
This is completely horrible idea. If Minecraft stops updating the forums will go berserk and then the news will stop and then the community will die out.
But, he said:
This is what Jeb said "he wants to stop developing Minecraft."
He said HE wants to stop developing Minecraft this doesn't mean that after that update Minecraft will stop, he could step down and let some other person take the seat like Notch did with Jeb.

I think that once the API comes out, any significant, non-bug fix change (terrain, skylands, etc.) will be the domain of mods. Dinnerbone/Mojang will probably slow down the update speed, but will continue to implement bug fixes and some smaller features/improvements.
However, I do not think the API will come out until 2.0/Minecraft will continue to update rapidly until 2.0. They have stated that they are working on something "better than Optifine," and have also promised to fix rendering, lighting, and more bugs before the API comes out.
I'm playing heavily feature-based and the day they stop updating Minecraft, is the day I'll probably loose interest in it... I'm not interested in mods (save for Optifine), user generated content can be good, but most of it is garbarge. It's always the official stuff that counts.
And, do you know of LBP(Little Big Planet)? I got bored of it because they stopped adding DLC Level Packs, so all I had left was user-creations.

Isn't that what they plan for the entire 1.5 update...

I'm quite sure Mojang is serious when they say something.
Maybe less frequent updates, much less frequent, like once a year because there will always be bugs that need fixing, but modders can fix those too.. So we'll see what happens. In my opinion the lack of anything new to vanilla will kill the game.. They said they have optimized the game, but I still think more could be done to better reduce the strain on computers more server optimizations too so we can have servers that support mods better.

I thought Notch gave the game to Jeb. If Jeb has it, he'll keep developing it until he think's it will be good enough. But I agree with you! I love seeing the development of our game!
I would be cool with one more year of updates like mobs, items, mechanics and maybe a new realm like the nether or some expanded feature that allows for longevity within the game. Look at how terraria just got dropped into a finished status. It is nicely polished but after a certain point I dont want to play it anymore. Minecraft at least has a better interaction level for building and mechanical functions. They made a brick of money off the game so it would be nice to see them complete the game in a manner that will allow it to thrive beyond its final release. If the people making and developing minecraft it just get bored with it or lose interest than leaving it to mods could help. I would hope that with the cash obtained and the fandom and continueing interest in minecraft as a whole would be enough to keep it living from the source and not the modders solely.
Ummm, the biggest problem with this is possible incomplete mechanics in the game. Like potions, I have yet to see a mod that adds real brewable, working potions to the game.
Either that or this goes open-source once sales drop, if you look in the "About The Game" section on our beloved Minecraft.net it still says this. If it goes OS then we definitely get a new team, maybe even begin works for new Minecraft titles? However it's hard to have a sequel to a sandbox game..
That's my thoughts. When Minecraft is done done (whenever that days comes, ignore that point), it'll go open-source. When that happens, there will be certain distros of Minecraft. At this point, you'd find one you like (or is most like 'NillaCraft) and follow that dev team.
They already take famous mods and implement them if they like the idea, Pistons, potions and many other mechanics and features were inspired/taken from mods, it's a pretty big honour to have it implemented... I wonder if they get paid from Mojang?
Some mod makers have been hired on (don't quote me, but pretty much most of the current programmers excluding Jens, maybe one more, were mod makers) and get paid in that roundabout way, since they know the ins and outs already, and can code things like the Mod API and engine overhauls cuz that's what they've been doing. But when you make a mod, you can't claim anything financially on it unless Mojang allows that (or opens their source), which they haven't done.

you don't know what Mindcrack is, do you?
OT: It would be sad to see the end of the official updates, but it has too happen sooner or later.
