EDIT: If you want it to be even easier, use ender pearls to get above bedrock in the nether, then build a portal to go back home. If you fight it there it can't destroy anything and you won't get stuck in the pits that the bombs make.
XP Guide Regardless of what change you do, no matter how small, someone will complain. - Jens Bergensten If you want me to see your reply, make sure to quote my post in your reply.
It depends on how you want to play it. The wither is a monster if you have mobGriefing on, and you try to fight it head on in an open area. If you fight it pragmatically (ie: the opposite of spawning it in a wide open area), it ranges from not hard to a complete joke. Spawn it in a 2-high room made of stone-ish material and the thing'll get stuck in the ceiling, unable to attack you, and taking suffocation damage. At that point, you just hit it until it dies. You can even do it with a stick, though it'll be slow going. It takes all the challenge out of the fight, yes, but given how obnoxious farming wither skulls is, I'd rather guarantee my victory than waste my pop items.
In a legit survival, you can't just beat it with a stick and no armor. If it's anything but bedrock it eats it, and you die.

Well that's stupid.
Now the only thing that slabs are useful for is decoration.
Everything in Minecraft is optional, the player makes the choice, not the game.
Unless the game chooses to undo the player('s creations), but that almost never happens unless you're stupid.
To be honest, I find the "those guys who complained the game was too easy now thinks the Wither is OP and needs a nerf" argument is stupid. It's obvious that the Wither is not OP, but he didn't add any difficulty in the first place (he's both optional and a gear check). Therefore, the complainers have nothing to complain about since difficulty isn't a factor, but the wither didn't add any challenge to the game so the side who thinks he's fine as-is isn't exactly correct either.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
It is nearly impossible to die from the Wither because you're bad at the game unless you do not know how to slash a sword or shoot a bow, assuming that your equipment is capable of defeating him. Purposely losing is another matter.
It's not a boss, it's a gear check. (An optional gear check at that, which is incredibly stupid no matter how you look at it.) The difference between a boss and a gear check is huge, even if the Wither IS labeled a "boss".

Why must people complain about optional features? If you don't like him, don't spawn him in.
In this case, it's probably because it's only the second boss ever added to the game, and it had TONS of potential.... and it didnt meet ANY of that potential. No effort went into the thing's attack patterns or AI: the only unique thing it does is eat blocks. But the rest of it's entire attack pattern is:
1. Sit on player's head, using speed that they cannot really outdo.
2. While sitting on player's head, spam a billionty little exploding skulls at point-blank range
3. Repeat until either player dies from lack of strong equipment, or Wither dies because player has strong equipment.
And on top of that, the ONLY reward for defeating the thing is a meager amount of XP, and the Nether Star. And the Nether Star ONLY makes the Beacon, currently the most underpowered-for-it's-cost item in the game. AND. And. The Wither can take AGES to summon. Getting the damn Wither Skulls takes utterly forever. So, you have a boss where the entire fight consists of "Have super armor/weapons? You win. Dont have them? You lose.", and doesnt even give you something worthwhile.
Normally, I tend to use the "Dont like it? Dont use it" arguement as well, when it comes to optional content, but the Wither is a special case. The idea of there FINALLY being another boss in the game was a very exciting one, and it was so disappointing to see the Wither (and it's reward) turn out the way it did. It doesnt "ruin the game" or anything, but I do consider it the biggest disappointment in the game since.... er.... since.... uhhhh...... ok, since EVER. Normally, I'm very positive about Minecraft, and there's pretty much nothing in the game that I DONT like, which has been the case since I started in early Alpha. The Wither and Beacon are the very first things I've just honestly disliked at all.
I don't understand the grief argument. You can grief with your fists, or a pickaxe, or a load of TNT. All of which are easier to get and use than the wither.
Agreed. However most servers I play on have TNT placement disabled and protection plugins so the wither is an easier tool IF well contained
The Wither.
Really? Its SUPPOSED to be challenging. Minecraft is an easy game to pick up and play; it takes real skill and hard work to get dimonds, enchanted stuff, and many other more complex things. Dont fight it if you dont like it. Dont like all these recent updates? Go get MCNostalgia and downgrade ( with the fact there will be barely any servers ).
The Wither itself is hard to kill; its supposed to be. But with well-thought through tactics, you can defeat it with relative ease.
If you don't like the game don't... wait... I think I've had an epiphany here.
I've just realized that you went on to this forum, posting this in an attempt to "spread the truth" and are 100% devout in believing how right you are. This means you will refuse to listen to what others have to say, because you are devout and human nature says you want to win an argument rather than admit you're wrong. So, even if 10 or 20 or 200 people on this thread tell you logical arguments, and you argue with them, and they beat down everything you have to say, you will never admit wrongness. I won't be suprised if you don't reply to this, because I know you know what I've typed here is true. So just keep going on believing you're justified in spreading your opinion, or trolling, or or whatever it is you're doing here. Just know that you're wrong, and even though you won't admit it, you'll know it.
Option 2: Knowing what I've just typed in your direction, you could be mature about this and just listen to all the people here, since logic dictates that if a bunch of people have something to say about something, someone probably has something worth listening to.
They should have made it spawn by itself right in the middle of your base randomly, in order to solidify stances once and for all and make people either definitely stay or definitely leave and STFU about it.
That said, I kinda like the Wither though. Aside from the wonky and exploitable AI. Even the Ender Dragon beats it in a fight because of that.
OMGWTFBBQ
NO. IT. IS. NOT.
Enchant some diamond crap and you're set.

Funnily enough I do use it, but it has a couple of issues (among which are spiders and creepers that deal very little damage and no nether/end).
It is nearly impossible to die from the Wither because you're bad at the game unless you do not know how to slash a sword or shoot a bow, assuming that your equipment is capable of defeating him. Purposely losing is another matter.

1. I think the Wither shouldn't be so fast. It's always in your face and you usually get stuch in a hole unless you are using speed II potions.
2. I think it should have an extreme weakness or a weakspot that you can hit to do critical damage.
And I'm sure servers have some magical hoobery-joobery to prevent people just kiting a wither all the way to the spawn area.
....right?
...RIGHT?! D:
