such a long complaint thread. I have nothing against them. Isolated witches that live in swamps, it's a cute halloween themed thing, like the pumpkins. As far as vanilla balancing though, their drops are kind of terrible, so there's not motivation to seek them out. Perhaps a random loot chest with potion ingredients in her house would help?
if you could customize the potions they throw/drop, these would be an amazingly versatile mob for adventure maps.

if there was an extremely rare mob that had customizeable drops (ANY drops) that would replace witches by a long shot.any way you do realize that the majority of voters picked "do nothing" and "i dont care." right?
I'm not really totally against witches but it seems like a such a weird feature to add to the game. It doesn't really seem to fit Minecraft in general, I mean sure there's zombies, skeletons, and giant spiders but there's not a lot of magical or witchcrafty objects, I mean sure there's enchantment tables but there's nothing really magical besides that. The only thing I can think of that would make someone want to add witches would be the cauldron and they took out it's ability to make potions (which was way more awesome than brewing stands ) before the game actually came out.
I like the witch fine. Many people are saying that they are the outlier, that they don't belong in the game because they are testificates, which are generally friendly and stupid. Well, aren't witches just the outcasts who have been kicked out by the iron golems for practicing their dark arts? Makes sense why they would retreat into swamps.
Some people have stated that witches will be so rare to find that they'd have little use. Why not spawn witches in groups of 3? No shortage of that in lore. Or maybe let them carry spawn eggs and toss those around too, perhaps just zombies and skeletons, to summon an extra tier of defense.
The only change I think I support is altering the "Wizard of Oz" look to something that's a little less cliche. I think it's a bit silly people are referring to gender since there really is no concept of gender at all in Minecraft. Change the name to "sorcerer" or "mage" or "outcast" or whatever, that shouldn't offend as many people.
its the whole "holiday-themed content" thing that bugs me. sure, it's nice for Halloween, but what happens afterward? it becomes boring and tedious. at least they made it bearable and looking a bit less like a generic Witch by making it have that swamp hut, though. now all that's left is the model/texture. don't ask me for an idea on how it can be improved, because i honestly don't have one other than trying to get rid of the pointy hat.
-Remake the Horribly done houses that polute the swamp
-Get the community to make better designs for the swamp hut
-Remake the witch all together or remove it.
-Theres a reason why people say that the witch doesn't fit minecraft
Yes, chickens and cows are always female, villagers are always male. That explains why they can all breed, right?
Just sayin'. I agree that all this debating about the witch is rather silly. The theme of the witch is a perfect fit for the game. Heck, you could even fathom up some headcanon that uses the malevolent witches to explain why there's so many undead humans and grotesquely mutated insects in the Minecraft world if you wanted to.
Notice how everyone doesn't share the same opinion as yours
Just going to post this again, since I originally said it:
Simple fix:
Change their appearance to look less like the standard villager, and more "monster" or creepy-like.
Change their name to Alchemist
Make them more aggressive / more health.
Make them drop something exclusive to them, that can make a new block or potion. Like invisibility / night vision potions.
Not hard guys. This fixes literally every problem people seem to have with them. (Which is insanely retarded to begin, that there's such an in depth discussion about this Mob, all the way to religious dogma. People never cease to make me feel less inclined to care about humans with each passing day.)
Also, I'm going to touch on this topic again with people referencing Witches being bad because of religious or dogmatic viewpoints. You're complaining about Witches being in the game because of their dark arts / religious affiliation, but yet if you go into the Nether, and press F3, your biome is called HELL. You're only now catching the religious references, and just now beginning to complain? If so, your right to complain about any of this should be revoked for pure stupidity.
No game is perfect, Even games I LOVE have elements I HATE. But It doesnt matter as I love the rest of the game.
Leave RELIGION OUT OF GAMES. PERIOD
If your playing a game, you play it to have fun and get away from RL for an hour or so (Much longer for some )
If your against witches, BTW the Original witch was more of a medicine person. But if your against witches for RELIGIOUS reasons, then your against.......
Zombies
Skelentons
Zombie Pigmen
Why because there all unholy in MOST religions, Don't see you all up in arms about them. You can't pick and choose witch bits you want to apply religion too and witch bits you don't.
Killing and eating pigs in some religions is a BIG NONO, And Cows same too in another If I recall correctly.
What about the tree lovers out there, should we remove the ability to cut trees down to stop offending them.
As for gender, STEVE is CLEARLY MALE.
The char you play is called STEVE, Never met or heard of a girl called Steve, Chickens are female, Zombies and Testificates are MALE, Cows are FEMALE.
Gender is in the game like it or not, GET OVER IT.
The witch spawns in swamps only, easily located because of the hut/house it lives in. It's easy enough to kill, and do you honestly think STEVE is the only person in the mine craft world that's able to do alchemy.
The Witch is fine, And all magic is at the end of the day is something someone can do that defies explanation. Heck being able to cure illness 4000 years ago made you a witch/wizard/ mirical worker.
But honestly LEAVE real life RELIGION out of games, It has no place at all.
Honestly (And I mean no offense here) Do the religious types here who it applies to bow ya head and give thanks before you get Steve to eat something. I'd place a solid bet the answer for 99% of you is NO. Why because its STUPID to do so in a GAME.
Rant over
Peace out
Soooo... My religion shouldn't influence my life at all?
1) Just going to post this again, since I originally said it:

1) I agree with your fix, I think that almost everyone would be happy if it were implemented.
2) I will say the same thing I said before: why do you think that it is called "the nether" in game, were as in the code it is not? Likely, because they didn't want to offend people.
I agree that the witch as is, is lame. I was hoping for something more undead, scary, and less testificate-ish. The potion throwing is cool though.
How about a skeletal looking creature in red robes that hurls potions? I know this can be accomplished by texture pack/modding the witch model, but since the witch has yet to be implemented, this is something that should be considered for a few seconds. It's an undead skeletal warlock. A lich. Whatever you want to call it.
You all know what I'm talking about. Anyone familiar with the basis of swords & sorcery stuff knows about skeleton mages. They're a staple of the genre. I think they'd fit in with zombies, skeletal archers, and zombie pigmen much better than a witch. Just imho though. Also: I just want to point out that the "poll" is highly biased. The way you phrased the questions is horrible. Could you rework them to remove the bias?

I think all the witch needs is a better-looking hut and maybe a way for players to make peace with them so they can trade for alchemy ingredients or something.
1( Witch brings me to my next point and I do NOT mean this as a personal attack on your belief, But in this day and age Anyone (Other than children) Knows that magic/witchcraft that is implied by the term witch (Cursing people ect) Is not real, and never was, Yet your up in arms about it, KNOWING it doesn't and never has existed.)
2(Know this, You know that those MURDERED (They called it executions lol) Because people accused them of being a witch, You/your religion supports that.)
3(Back on topic, I do believe renaming to warlock (Give it the ability to summon the undead) would be a good compromise.)
Firstly, I am sorry that I said what I said, it was rather rash.
1) I will say one thing (just as a idle thought); how do we know that they never existed? We can't go back in time to check, so therefor we don't know this
2) My religion does not support the killing of people who are thought to be witches, you must realize, the fact that someone calls themselves Christian does not mean that they are, the people who did these things weren't Christians, they may have called themselves Christians, but their actions proved that they weren't
3) I think so to, and I really don't know why this hasn't at least been tested by Mojang (just put out one snapshot with a renamed witch, and gauge feedback)
And honestly, I found it really hard to not take this as a "attack on my beliefs" but I will try.
1) I agree that the witch as is, is lame. I was hoping for something more undead, scary, and less testificate-ish. The potion throwing is cool though.

1) Honestly, I am really hoping that they get changed to something like you just described, but I don't know how popular of an idea that is...
2) I have to agree with EndRPnT "how so?" But if you have input on how I should change it, or how it is biased, I may try to implement it (and I say may because it may be too late to really make a difference by changing it)
1) I will say one thing (just as a idle thought); how do we know that they never existed? We can't go back in time to check, so therefor we don't know this

1) Generally the worldwide *scientific* consensus is against magic and deities, at least when we want to think about practical things here on earth and not in some form of afterlife.
2) Only problem with saying that those who killed weren't Christian is that they probably would have said the same about you, quoting "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." Exodus 22:18 . Like it or not, witch burnings are part of Christian history. One that luckily everyone (or so I hope) disagrees with today.

What about those players who would prefer witches to be initially peaceful and willing to trade? Essentially that's the opposite of aggressive. Since the trading system is already in place, that would be a "simple" fix. What is suggested above is not necessarily a majority view, as the poll attached to this thread shows.
2) I will say the same thing I said before: why do you think that it is called "the nether" in game, were as in the code it is not? Likely, because they didn't want to offend people.
That's exactly the issue. People will complain and say they're "offended" by literally anything. I'm sure there's someone on this planet right now, who is offended because they believe I'm raping their very existence by breathing in the same air as them, and it makes them "offended". Seriously, people need to wake up, quit being such crybabies about everything, and grow a pair. I don't know what happened to make people such whiny wimps in the last 20 years, but this needs to stop. It's to the point where I can't tell if they're being serious or not, because it's such a retarded thing to be giving any care in the world about, let alone being offended.

Make them passive until you hit them first / able to trade until being hit, then they get full of **** and vinegar and start kicking your rectum into your face with their aggressiveness. There, both issues solved. Now apply my simple fix, and literally no one will have anything to complain about.... but I'm sure they'll find a way to be crybabies. They always do.
Maybe because it is something brand new that they have to worry about or it is to easy I thought it would be pretty easy to handle her and I havent been able to download the snapshot because it wouldnt download all the way when I opened up minecraft and plus one more thing this was something they probably used as like a halloween teaser or something like that so you can always take it off.

Since the trading system is already in place, that would be a "simple" fix. What is suggested above is not necessarily a majority view, as the poll attached to this thread shows.
How about a happy medium where witches are neutral during the day, aggressive during the night (like a spider) but have a "faction", if you will, that will let players be friendly to the witch even during the night?

1) Yeah, but the worldwide consensus isn't always right, however, I was just pointing out that we have no way to know that they never existed.
2) I would respond to that (Exodus 22:18) like this (presuming I was talking to them):
(Note: this is in a spoiler because it is slightly off topic, also: this has a lot of bible in it, so if you don't want to read it, don't open the spoiler)
But first I will clarify (and correct) what I said before, they may still be Christians, all Christians do things that are wrong, so it was incorrect for me to assume that they were not Christians just because they did wrong, they may have later seen what they did as wrong and repented, so it was incorrect for me to presume they were not Christians just because they did wrong.
It is a good thing that we are no longer under the law, but rather under grace:
"For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace."
Romans 6:14
What does that mean?
Well, it means that we have realized that we can't obey the entire law, we are simply incapable, but
fortunately, God, in his great mercy, made a way for us to be reconciled to him.
So, why do we continue to try to obey what is in the law if we are now under grace instead?
Well, look at this, the very next verse:
"What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!"
Romans 6:15
So we are not to keep sinning under grace, but how do we know what is sin if then?
Answer: Not by the law itself, but rather, by what Christ did while he was on the earth, hence why
Christians are called Christians, (Christian, literally, Christ follower, or disciple of Christ)
So, what did Christ do when he was confronted with what to do with a witch?
Well, the bible never tells of him being in that situation, but, he was in a situation very similar:
John 8: 3-5
The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the
midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law
Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”
Now, as you can see, according to the law, people who committed adultery should be killed, much like how
the law says that those who practice witchcraft are to be put to death, but, what does Jesus do in this
situation? The rest of the passage:
John 8: 3-6-11
6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and
wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them,
“Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent
down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the
older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to
her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus
said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
He forgives, he doesn't say that sin is fine, but he forgives, so, what should a Christian do when they find
someone who is practicing witchcraft, well, according to Jesus, we (as in, Christians) should forgive them.
If we (again, Christians) truly realize what we have been saved from, we will agree with the bible when
it says:
"Vengeance is mine, sayeth the LORD"
Deuteronomy 32:35
And we will not feel that we have the right to pass judgement on people who God may yet forgive, just as he forgave
us (Christians). If a Christian truly realizes what they have been forgiven for, they will not hesitate to
show that same forgiveness to others, unfortunately, as Christians, we are yet sinners ourselves, so we still
fail to forgive, and we fail to do God's will, so we are not yet able to live up to the standard we set for
ourselves, but we know that some day God will make us as pure, just as Jesus himself was pure.
"Now wait" you say, "What about 2 Timothy 3:16?"
"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for
training in righteousness"
Now, that verse says that ALL scripture is given by God, so what about the law? Why was that given by
God? Basically, the law was given so that we would know that:
"All have sinned and fell short of the glory of God"
Romans 8:28
And this is where I get that form:
"For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight."
Romans 3:20a
So if, as this says, the law saves no one, why is it there? Second half of the verse:
"Since through the law comes knowledge of sin."
Romans 3:20b
So the reason the law is there is to convict us all as sinners, so that we know, that we have sinned, and
fallen short of the glory of God, and that we are desperately in need of God's grace.
Feel free to ask about, argue with, insult, or complain about anything that I said, but please do it in a PM
-Thank You-
I still stand by what I initially though about them, which is that they don't feel right. I could pinpoint exactly what I dislike, but I just don't like them. It's mainly the appearance, I should think.
If there we any chance of them being changed, I'd want them to look a lot less generic. Personally, I think a squat little frog-like person would be pretty cool, with a hunched back. I'm all for keeping the nose though, but perhaps the wiggling should also be applied to Villagers...
I might try and cook up a quick sketch or something of what I'd think would be good for the Witch. The look is just way too generic for me...
Yeah, I think it would be nice it they looked better, but I am OK with what we have now, not really happy, but OK.
I honestly find it mildly offensive that people would complain about the name, in fact it seems mildly bigoted, as I am friends with several Wiccans, of whom main Christians slaughtered for being witches, that whole thing is mildly bigoted.
now as far as the looks, I don't mind. I like the simple look, and I like the idea of testificates coming in a variety. Now the name should be revised to potion master, and then make a different testificate to be called a which and have that do something a little more magical. Then round it off to 3 with one being that warlock and having it summon undead.
Witch's are a year round thing, as much as zombies are. No one complained last Christmas they where being attacked by skeletons and zombies on Christmas because those are things typically seen around Halloween. Saying they should be removed after Halloween because it's not a Christmas thing is like saying the Records should be removed because it's not the 70's. Maybe they just wanted to spice up the swamps? How is adding more content to the game bad?
They remind me of halloween Stories where there's a small village and outside the village there's a witch who lives in a swamp, she lives there year round but around halloween they do spooky things. Notice the witch in this story is there year round.
if you could customize the potions they throw/drop, these would be an amazingly versatile mob for adventure maps.

someone who is practicing witchcraft, well, according to Jesus, we (as in, Christians) should forgive them.

Yeah, I think it would be nice it they looked better, but I am OK with what we have now, not really happy, but OK.
now as far as the looks, I don't mind. I like the simple look, and I like the idea of testificates coming in a variety. Now the name should be revised to potion master, and then make a different testificate to be called a which and have that do something a little more magical. Then round it off to 3 with one being that warlock and having it summon undead.
Keep on derpin'
They remind me of halloween Stories where there's a small village and outside the village there's a witch who lives in a swamp, she lives there year round but around halloween they do spooky things. Notice the witch in this story is there year round.
