Perhaps bats could drop wings, which could be crafted with sugar (or vanilla, though I doubt that will be added) to make Bat Wing Crunchies? An item that heals one food bar with satiation little over a melon slice?
Do you know what silverfish are? They are tiny bugs (an inch long) that eat glue and paper. I guess since they are "large" in Minecraft (relative to their real-world counterpart, like the in-game spider), it might make more sense for them to drop paper or books.
I thought they could drop sugar, hence silverfish eat starch which is white aswell.
The silverfish can't cause an apocalypse as silverfish don't multiply. I had a mod that did something like this new feature a few months ago and there was no silverfish apocalypse.
Put three bundles of wheat in a line on a table. Receive bread.
I was just thinking how scale armor was pretty close in appearance to chainmail.
I don't know what type of chainmail you've been looking at but it looks nothing like scale armor. Anyways, bread is made from wheat though there are other ingredients. Chainmail is made with tiny chain links, not scales. It is not a good nor very valid comparison.

Maybe you should remove the part about blazes too, since they now spawn more often in Nether fortresses.
For me (and many others) they only spawn during the time when you first find the fortress. As soon as you click the Save & Quit button, they no longer spawn and you must find a new fortress or use McEdit to delete the chunks.

This seriously does seem like a bug of some sort. When I'd posted in that topic, I was seeing the things all over the place, and now..... I'm still seeing them all over the place.
Even my ORIGINAL fort, generated well before the recent snapshots, which hadnt been getting Wither Skeletons or Blazes, is now just filled with them.
And the Magma Cubes are EVERYWHERE. They seem to have a similar rarity level to Endermen. But it's not uncommon for me to fight 3 or 4 of the BIG ones on one trip through the Nether, wether I stop at a fort or just head towards distant portals.
Really dont know what's up with that spawning issue otherwise..... I cant imagine WHY it's not working for some people! And it's really too bad, because the Nether stuffs are SO much more interesting when these guys are spawning correctly.
Now as for the topic here.....
.......FINALLY Silverfish show up! That's just grand.
That makes this one of the better updates I can remember. This and witches, yes, I'm liking this one.

Hmm, perhaps I'll do some more tests. If I can confirm the glitch being fixed, then I will remove the blaze and magma cube parts of my signature. The "cave spider" part will probably stay for a while (forever) though... Unless they decide to make caves even more scary.
Wasn't sure if I should restart a world or just recreate my current one... and then I saw this. Well worth the small setback of having Silverfish in my current caves(which I suppose I had yet to explore anyways lol)
Here's a question though: How common/rare are these?
When I think about this further.... it doesnt really mean much if the Silverfish blocks are really rare. By themselves, a Silverfish is probably the single least-threatening mob in the entire game. They pretty much HAVE to spawn in hordes, or they're still a bit on the pointless side.
And do they spawn in already-generated caves? I'm guessing not?

A single silverfish is as bad as a single zombie. A swarm of these things is horrible. They do a lot of damage.
A feesh apocalype in regular Minecraft while exploring caves. Sign me up any day.
Though I doubt anyone here gets the reference.
Kidding.
