In the new snapshot the wither explodes apon being formed, but the explosion is stopped by water. Can someone try putting a water block on the top of the trap to see if he will still blow it up or not?
Tried it. If you put the water block on top, it does keep him trapped. However, the water destroys the wither skulls as you place them, so it's a little hard to summon him. Basically, make the exact same trap. Put a bucket of water on top of the top block, and let it run down the sides. Then place the soul sand, and the middle wither skull (no water runs over the middle of the trap, so it will stay there). Then place the left and right as fast as you can, and if you're lucky, you can summon him.
Edit: Pictures!
Edit 2: I think when he has nothing to shoot, the wither just randomly shoots off a few heads for fun. This has a chance of destroying the trap. Either that, or just after a while he breaks out. Either way, I have been unable to hold him indefinitely...
Would it be possible to summon him first then quickly place the water block as he charges? And also, do dispensers work on him, and does he attack them? Because if not, you wouldn't technically even have to be there to kill him, and if he doesn't attack the dispenser, you can be completely safe.
yes. he still "eats" the ground under him now and then, but if its off rails he simply becomes a turret.. ...might actually work as a (highly unstable) drilling machine that way.
Does his spawn explosion break obsidian? If not, you could always just make the floor/ceiling bigger to put the fences outside his explosion radius.
Well, for one, you'd have to make it at least 13 by 13 or so. And also his little wither heads that he shoots destroy obsidian, so he can break out if he really wants to.
So I did some testing and came to some conclusions:
1. This still works if you place the water block after spawning him, while he is charging.
2. Wait until he takes drowning damage, as he then breaks the water block.
3. Build a rail system to the trap and 'fire' a minecart into the trap.
Once the Wither is in a minecart, it suddenly is much less threatening. It loses his ability to break blocks and essentially becomes neutral, only attacking things that attack it. I haven't tested if this works with the player but it has not attacked any mobs I've spawned.

to make it safe and automated you could attach some kind of redstone device that triggers the water on top of him as he gets summoned...i was thinking on a bud switch but where to put it? dont have time to test now but i might test it tomorrow,
EDIT maybe something less complicated than a bud will work, just that the destruction of a block triggers the water on top of him.
EDIT2: i tried to know something fancy and probably useless but i attached a vertical bud switch where the pistons is the obsidian block where he spawns. To do this i had to attach the dispenser on top of him so he doesnt mess everything exploding (that includes the piston that is intact in the end and to make the bud switch work i had to connect a swapper... Its hard to explain with words, specially if english is not my natural language but i might upload pics for those interested
EDIT3: Im doing more test and it seems that sometimes the Wither escapes and flys out of the thing... And if it doesnt flies out, he shoots and destroys everything.

Heres the thing i made, theres a ring of stone one block over and around the fence thingie. You can see that in between the fences theres a piston instead of obsidian which is the BUD switch. This bud switch needs an initial block above the redstone torch on the right so the swaper works to change that block for a fence, trapping the wither.
On this pic you can see the swapper a little bit better maybe... you can see the Wither exploding and not causing damage to blocks...
Oh ! another nothe for you.... he can shoot you through the gaps between the middle obby and the netherfences so it isnt 100% safe.
About the minecart and rail thing, it should be fixed, Mojang should find a way to avoid wither on minecarts that would make the things the wither controlable which isnt suposed to be.. right?
if we were to not give him a chance to randomly break free of this trap there could possibly be some kind of a mob grinder built infront of him, diverging his attention to the creatures this grinder ejects. Since the wither likes undead and dislikes the living the best could possibly be a testificate grinder.
Any better alternatives than a human meat grinder anyone?
Iron golems, they're rather durable and you can have your tesificates make them. In fact, if you let the golems get close enough to hit him you have yourself a Wither grinder.
i don't get it why are we talking about this now talk about it when the wither comes to minecraft not in those little update things
why can't you find out how to trap the wither when the wither comes to minecraft
gosh ....
but also did u try bedrock ???
Why not use the snapshots? And this is so you can trap a wither without cheating.

Alright, little issue with distracting him. When he sees something to attack, he starts to fly, which apparently teleports him a short distance above where he's sitting. This lets him get loose. Alternatively, if you don't distract him, he blows up stuff around him with the blue skulls, which would also let him loose. I suspect a solution to this would either involve a really thick ceiling to prevent the teleportation (if that can work, he might just eat through wherever he wants to teleport), or a massive cobble factory built around the enclosure that regenerates all the floors and ceilings faster than he can destroy them.
I have succeeded in making a garenteed way to get the Wither into a minecart with minimal chances of escape.Firstly it builds on the design shown in this thread to keep the wither in one spot without movement. You place one water block under the top stone block, and wait for the Wither to break it (from drowning damage). Then you pull the bottommost lever, which drops a sand block in the middle, wither falls and pushes minecart, thus mounting it, and your free to do what you want with the minecart'd Wither. (in the screen above I just threw it into a deep pool of water. It never dies but periodically breaks the water blocks lol.Notice how the minecart is not on it's rail but halfway over the edge. This is important, to make sure the Wither pushes the cart which will make it mount it. The sand block being held up by iron bars is important too; a normal block left enough footing to prevent the Wither from falling down. (these can be replaced with glass panes or fences; both work.) When the sand block falls down into the hole, it finished a redstone curcuit and the rail the minecart is on gets powered, pushing it (and the Wither) off to wherever you choose. As for killing him, I had an idea. The Wither cannot break bedrock, but it's not easily available. HOWEVER, there is one place where is it set up so it can be used to suffocate him: The Nether's ceiling. If you dump the cart there he can die of suffocation damage and not break the blocks suffocating him.EDIT: based on my tests, the above method not only works, you can freely go up and hit him with a sword and he can't fight back!
Its highly improbable that Mojang allows us to put the wither on minecarts and if they do, its going to be ridiculous... i mean trap a boss in a minecart to make its killing easier.... doesnt sounds likely man, they are going to fix that if they didnt fixed it already... or at least as soon as any mojang memmber sees that is possible.
Another way to avoid this is making the wither only spawnable in a certain area but who knows how is going to be.

This would be correct if not for the fact that Ender Dragons can be put in minecarts. This is because ANY entity can be put into a minecart (even particles count as 'entities' that the minecart can hold, it just doesn't normally do it. You can set a particle to it tho, it's really funny) It's *REALLY* hard to do it legit, but by manually spawning it you can get it into a minecart.

Interesting. How do you keep his explosion from destroying your contraption, namely the rails? And on a related note, water in the Nether is a problem, so you'd have to send him through a portal...

Oh, will you just run off to some pvp server and let us have some fun? Just because we're trying to outsmart Mojang's latest attempt to turn the game into a hack and slash RPG doesn't mean you have to be a wet blanket.
Okay, a few more tests, and it would appear that the teleportation is instead due to the area he tries to spawn in (once his health is charged) being filled by something else. Seems he needs a minimal area around him, unobstructed by blocks or other entities. Iron golems try to hit him before he's fully charged up, which is why I had issues with him escaping.
Another, decidedly hilarious but possibly impractical way to kill him would be using his initial explosion to set off a chain reaction that rains a metric ton of TNT down on his nasty little face. Gathering that much gunpowder in survival may prove problematic, however, and I'd rather not crash the server I play on.

Wha dah ?
Man you have problems with your attitude. Mojang should decide whats best for the game not best for PVPers on servers, letting us put the withers on minecarts would be ridiculous, probably no danger, no effort and its very probable its going to be fixed.
People start spreading stuff that works on a WIP mob and when it stops working they will all start filling the forum with complaints.

Tried to quote you on my last post and the forum failed... double post FTL
I don't have the snapshot, but does the Wither die by lava? You could probably kill him pretty quickly that way, but you might lose the star if you aren't careful. Maybe if you only use it to get his health down pretty close to death, and then quickly use water on the lava, and then kill him by hand. Just a thought.

Of course it shouldn't be decided based on pvpers. That would be nonsense, as Minecraft was not made for pvp. What I was getting at is there seems to be an attitude among the pvp/hardcore survival type players that any attempt to overcome challenges in the game using brains as opposed to brawn (i.e. mob grinders, iron golem farms, etc.) is an "exploit" and not a legitimate way to approach the game. I took your comment as stating that there shouldn't be some clever way of beating the thing, which is why I (jokingly) suggested that you would perhaps have more fun playing pvp then reading a thread on how to cleverly get around the Wither and complaining that we shouldn't bother trying. Sorry for the misunderstanding there.

IMHO exploits like this should be fixed is way too OP to be able to put a boss into a minecart... its like.. trying to make an elephant fit into a Mini Morris or a VW Bug...
