I'm not updating to 1.3 because of the lag. I already have enough that I am lucky enough for optifine to increase my FPS from tiny with 7 FPS to short + 16 with 20 FPS. So if I were to play offline, no login, no Internet connection, or anything of that sort, could I play without the lag that was caused by merging SMP with SSP?
I have never tried this, but i doubt it would work. It is usually not server merged lag, but computer lag. You can still try this and I want to know your results. :)If you really want to reduce lag then i suggest you use CCleaner. Run the cleaner every week or so and your lag should be reduced by a lot!

I don't think that will work on my computer, I am almost forced to run Linux because Windows doesn't want to be friendly. Besides, I use a Acer Aspire One Netbook. So I my specs are cruddy anyways. I was hearing things about how computers with single core processors would lose a lot of FPS.
I would just search on youtube for stuff that reduces lag. But, be sure to make your render distance to tiny smooth lighting off, no bobbing, no clouds, etc.
Performance effects will be different for all users, for me it's been much better but my fps is random everyday ;-;. Opti fine is already out for 1.3.1. I recommend enabling Vsync in the options properties file in the .minecraft folder, that will make your display going less jagged and more smooth.

Oh... i have an acer (I think the same one) and I know what you mean. It's very hard to improve lag then because it is now processing lag. If you have another computer, i suggest you use that one.
If you have a single core processor, then you will unfortunately suffer from more lag, due to the fact that your computer needs to run both a server AND a client. However, I have an (untested) theory. If you were to play on a multiplayer server rather than in a singleplayer world, then you MIGHT receive higher fps, at the expense of possibly increased mob lag.

Falcon, your single core processor post is true, howerver I doubt that will work. It's processing lag. Not minecraft. Even if he did play multiplayer the FPS should be the same or lower due to how many structures there are and the speed of server. I have no suggestions to fix this except play on a small server if any.
also lower options to more lag
friendly things like max fps, tiny view, no smooth lighting, no weather, no clouds or anything o that sort
