I have no problem with it. Before enchantments were pretty much impossible to get (good ones, at least) through normal play. On my Survival world I had no mob grinders and through many months only got to like level 16 through just killing mobs with how I normally played Survival. Now at least you can get experience easily enough and actually be able to have fun with enchantments.
And I think 1.4 will balance it a bit more, now that mobs will be spawning with armor and enchanted weapons to make them stronger. Now it's an arms race. You need better enchantments and gear than them, or else you'll have a heck of a time when you come across a Skeleton with knockback.
I'm a little on and off about this new update. I was kind of mad, after spending all of my time, and resources, that my endermen farm was of no use on an SMP server I play. It's a lot easier to get exp, and a lot more fun I suppose. I think that the change of this is to get us to do other stuff for the game, make it more fun to play, more interesting. I've always wanted to make a really nice strip-mine down at around level 10-13, 3 or 4 blocks high, then go back, make it all looks neat and nice, and this is a great excuse for it. I think that the reason they changed it is because they wanted more players to actually get involved in the game, not just AFK, kill for 30 minutes, then AFK another 3 hours. This is just my personal opinion.
I have not played MC in a few month's but came back today and it updated. Me and a friend played on my LAN, the first thing we noticed was how stupidly easy it was to level now. For some reason Coal gives a ton of xp, but iron and other resources don't seem to give any exp when you mine them? By the end of the time we played in the course of 3 hours we were both above level 20, and died at least 2 times each throughout.. I agree it was to hard the last we played but this to far in the opposite direction. Also it seems every time I play the game just gets easier and easier, we don't tend to die at all after getting iron armor. Alpha was much better on the difficulty scale, the game has progressively gotten boring.
Seeing how mining ores gives you xp (except iron, for some reason.) enchanting has become much easier. too easy in fact. I feel that it gives you a little too much xp. Maybe 1 xp orb is fine. I wanna earn my enchants.
iron and gold doesnt give exp because you could just keep placing and breaking it and farm exp so thats why if you smelt it you get exp
Either way, it's all too easy. I got to level 22 after an hour of playing. What? That's way too easy. It needs to be progressive (slows as you go higher) as it was before, and cap at 50.

The diminishing returns is a bad idea, but I do think it should require much more EXP to level up. having 30 as the cap is fine if they would actually require more than 2 or 3 mob kills to level up.
That was the point, to make it easy. Now enchantments are actually accessible by all kinds of players, not just those who built mob grinders to the exact specifications of a tutorial. Experience was simply to encourage users not to die, and to provide a small reward after a certain amount of playing. By how experience and enchanting worked before, that small reward turned into a massive crusade for experience just to play roulette and hope hours of grinding didn't screw you royally.
Now enchanting is on a level with brewing. It is accessible, but not immediately so, provides rewards for casual players and allows for temporary bonuses that, if you lose them, it isn't something to cry over. Spending hours grinding for a high level sword and then losing it in a cheap way was not exactly fun.

Its known that your concept of difficult or hard is something that involves annoyance or massive grinding which for some players is not fair. The ammount of time spent playing minecraft varies because of many factors such as age (work/study, if they have familly with kids, other hobbies etc), making everything in the game too much long term turns the game something impossible if you dont dedicate a lot of time on it each day.
22 hours of gameplay its almost 1 complete day playing minecraft nonstop were some people can barely play 1 hour, that would mean 22 days playing 1 hour each day or 11 days playing 2 hours!. Grinding was not the only problem with enchanting, there were other issues such as the randomness was far too much when you could expend hours and hours grinding for some stupid and useless enchantment.
The amount of XP given by ores is fine, the amount of xp you could get from a complete coal vain is not "much", you have to get several vains in order to get a "decent" amount of lvl. Also remember that not all the playes focus on one thing when they are playing, they do this and that depending on their needs, or they focus more on what they like to do and maybe thats not mining.
Yes, but smelting iron/gold gives you exp. So, you still get exp from iron/gold.
Yes, it gives you exp but seems to be balanced, as the exp you get from cooking. Think how many stacks of iron and coal you need the exp given for it and think about evrything that mining involves to get that experience.
Level 22 after an hour doesn't seem that bad considering you will probably spend that on your pick to try and get a good enchanted pick. Also it makes it less painful when you don't get the enchantment you want or when your best item finally breaks and you need to replace it.
The diminishing returns is a bad idea, but I do think it should require much more EXP to level up. having 30 as the cap is fine if they would actually require more than 2 or 3 mob kills to level up.
It takes roughly 200 zombies (not tested with other mobs) to get to level 30 from 1 on 1.3.1. I don't have a problem with the enchanting system personally, they nerfed it from 12w26a.
there was nothing fun about "earning" a decent enchant by sitting at a mob grinder for days. DAYS!!!
I frankly found it ridiculous that you could enchant a piece of armor that would last a few hours of actual combat that takes 10x as long sitting around at a mob grinder to enchant! I never used any enchants above level 1 because they simply weren't worth the time required.
I say it's balanced. I am a huge enchanter, and having to wait almost 3 hours for 50 levels is ridiculous (I use a single cave spider spawner XP farm btw). At first when I heard about the max level reduction, I was mad. I thought at first that you wouldn't be able to get what you could normally get with a 30+ enchantment. When I heard that the probabilities were changed, my whole view on the 1.3 update changed. I'm sorta annoyed that you get XP from smelting though. It seems kinda ridiculous. I'm still going to use an XP grinder though, even though I'm a huge miner aswell.
"and having to wait almost 3 hours for 50 levels is ridiculous"
You must be joking. What do you want? A game you can master in a day?

A game that has gameplay rather than standing around at a mob farm is nice, too.
If you want to whine because you are choosing to stand around. That is your problem. I play the game, I go out at night to kill and to gain a few levels here and there. But I never sat around for hours complaining it took to long. Pathetic.
It needs to cap at level 50. And it should be something like...say 1.3X each level for example. As in.
ALSO. Since it does take forever to get to high levels. A added benifit would be, if you die. You drop to the last increment of 10. So...
Die at 19. Drop to 10. Die at 34. Drop to 30. The punishment of dieing is still high, but doesn't kill your hopes.
This would be a pretty good balalnce. Leveling to 50 would take a long ass time, as it should.
Each increment of 10 should determine the power.
For example.
Level 1 through 10 provide the same Enchantments. BUT...at level 10, you have a MUCH higher chance of getting the best you can get for 1 through 10.
Make since?
Player G at level 10 can only get the same types of enchantments as player D at level 1...but player G has a MUCH higher chance of getting a more powerful version of that enchantment.
Let's pretend that Level 1 through 10 can only get the enchantments, Derp, Herp, and Terp. Each of these can have a power level of 1 through 4 (5?) I II III IV V.
Player G is at level 10. He/she tries for a enchantment and gets Derp IV
Player D is at level 3, He/she tried and gets Terp I
Player D is upset, and decides to try a bunch, after trying 4 times at level 3. He/She got Herp III
So...yes at a low level you can get a higher Power Number...but it is a very big gamble. Do you try? And possibly waste your EXP. Or do you wait to get closer to the increment of 10 to get the best chance.
From 40 to 50, the best enchantments are found here. With their respectable power levels. SO...You can take a gamble at level 44, or...you can try to get closer to 50 giving you the highest chance.
Killing mobs non-stop and mining like a crazy b**ch a good idea? I like current way of getting exp and amount of exp orbs. Goto MMORPG and grind there!
It has already been nerfed. I used to be able to get to level 200 in an hour. Coal barely gives any exp, you can't use furnaces to get to level 30 anymore either. I would like it to not take forever to get to level 30.
If grinding was impossible, it would be very balanced. However, there are farms which can get to level 30 in close to one minute. These farms are very difficult to build, but also very possible with the new leveling system, which makes levels 1-16 linear (they all take the same ammount of experience to go from one level to the next) And the rest of them are slightly less exponential (Levels are more difficult to progress to with each level obtained) than before. If you want to put the time and resources into making these farms, you can practically GIVE yourself the levels.
I do think that it is fantastic that the actually did something, though, because in 1.2, enchanting was far from acceptable.
50 or 30 levels it doesn't matter. You're just spreading the same possibilities across 20 more levels with 50. People were always complaining about how little difference there was between levels. If you want lvl 50 again for the time sink then you could just as well increase the same amount of xp across 30 levels as you can 50. So people that are hung up on the lvl 50 versus 30 just aren't making sense. Absolutely no reason why 50 makes more sense than 30 with this system.
And I think 1.4 will balance it a bit more, now that mobs will be spawning with armor and enchanted weapons to make them stronger. Now it's an arms race. You need better enchantments and gear than them, or else you'll have a heck of a time when you come across a Skeleton with knockback.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
