Well for one thing, should those who didn't do that because they were happy with the then-default gravel now be expected to go back and update their old maps to say "blah blah blah 1.2.5 textures recommended" ?
If they actually care enough about their work, then yes, yes they should. If somebody takes the time to make these amazing maps, then taking the few seconds to say what texture pack is recommended shouldn't be an issue at all.
Why do people complain about texture changes? Get over it and use a ****ing texture pack to change it back. It's not that difficult.
You're completely ignoring the valid arguments taking place. Just another person who thinks they know everything by providing the most bland and unoriginal response that doesn't even come close to contradicting opposing arguments.
I'm going to be honest, the tone difference is barely noticeable. I'm not saying you can't see it, but as I said, it's barely noticeable of a difference. The texture itself is more of the difference.

I like the new gravel. the old one hurts my eyes each time a look at it. :| I actually like the 2nd picture with the 1.3 gravel, your town looks better in my opinion.
By the way everyone, if you use OptiFine and spliced the 1.2.5 and 1.3.1 texture files to fix this, remember to change the lava and water animations to Dynamic - using the default On only animates them when using the game's default texture. Look forward to needing to do that every time the game updates!
If [creators who used default] actually care enough about their work, then yes, yes they should [go back and recommend a 1.2.5 texture pack].
"Care"? Honestly that doesn't seem fair. Some creators will have left Minecraft, or be unable to do this for various reasons. Others will have made enough creations to make the process of updating them all a burden.
Even for those that manage to do it, it's a surprise - and very needless - new overhead on formerly completed works. And for those that don't, their maps suffer.

Well, then I don't know what to tell you. Minecraft is a game that will always be changing, so if you're unable to adapt to those changes, then....well, I already said I don't know what to say.
Why is there always haters on every single update?! Even the bugfix updates! The trick is to embrace the new and changed aspects of Minecraft, instead of a biased judgement on them based on what you were used to. That is why I never hate or complain on the updates, never.
Not a fan of this thinking. sometimes change is in fact bad
also not a fan of the new gravel, it reminds of me the of the "diamond plate" rednecks line their truck beds with.

I know, but it's not quite the same as that. Creators of texture packs and maps in particular should always know implicitly and accept that new blocks and game mechanics could render their contributions obsolete.
The thing is this change isn't an addition by any definition of the word.
Here's a vote to say I think it's a much-needed improvement. It actually has some visual quality to it rather than before. Will be useful in decoration/building more than the "always burn" factor it had going against it before.
Nothing holds within the old-factors of Minecraft before 1.8.1 anymore, Jeb has totally obliterated everything. It is so plain and lifeless now, everyone who plays isn't as friendly as pre-1.8.1. Some people say to use MCNostalgia, that is such a shallow statement as Minecraft is much more than just singleplayer. Mojang and the Bukkit team really have dug out everything fun about the game since I have joined.
I tend to ignore these kind of threads because of all the hate. But this one really got to me.
Ok explain to me your reason why minecraft sucks now?
Back then in beta sure the land look unearthly which is the only reason I think people liked it. So when they changed it to look earthly (Which people wanted at first!) Mojang caught hell about it. That was a good reason to complain but a minor texture change to a block a lot of people hate anyway is pointless since you can easily install mods to change the land generaition and a texture pack to change the texture

Stop Complaining and enjoy minecraft
Usually best to just ignore posts like that, honestly.
What always gets me about it: is the people saying that "OH ALL THIS COOLNESS WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE GAME AND NOW IT'S RUINED AND BLARGH DE BLAHGH DE BLOOOOOOOOORP!!!1111". When, in fact...... nothing's ever really BEEN removed. Patches generally only ADD to the game, and aside from the hunger bar, pretty much all of them are COMPLETELY OPTIONAL aspects to the game that you can totally ignore if you dont like it.
Yet still it "ruins" minecraft, so says people like the one you'd quoted. Utterly baffling.
On the note of the gravel,
I have to wonder just *why* they changed it at all? Was that ever explained?

Notch promised ages ago that some of the textures would be redone because he had made them himself and didn't like them. Junkboy is the paid artist. He is simply following orders. Same reason why cobble got changed a while back. And grass.
With all these rage posts, imagine what would have happened if there had been a single update with all the updated textures. I don't think we'd stop hearing about it for a year or two. These forums would be crippled!
As for the argument that the new gravel makes the crosshair semi-invisible, I just discovered something the other day!
Stone and Cobblestone do the EXACT SAME THING!!!
Obviously this is a total game-breaker. Those textures MUST be changed, ASAP!

OMG. That's exactly what I think. They think that just saying "you can use [mod | texture pack | a door a gtfo]", they have the total truth on their side, without argumentation or any point that gives a opinion to the thread.
Is not that we don't want people that is against the point, but if you are against to the OP, then post a reason, is you don't care or hate the OP's argument, then DON'T POST if you will not gonna to say something intelligent.
I'm going to be honest, the tone difference is barely noticeable. I'm not saying you can't see it, but as I said, it's barely noticeable of a difference. The texture itself is more of the difference.
I can see the different , sometime looks very similar to the Cobblestone.
Actually, textures has been changed in Minecraft since a lot of time, but, the changes aren't so large, in general. Even with the old Cobble and the new one.
Is ok if they want to change a texture, I mean: maps, pixel art, etc, have to be obsolete in some moment in Minecraft, because is a game that have new versions after some time. But that obsolece can't be from a day to another. Also, the new texture changes everything: from shape to color. When the gravel was changed on 1.0, the change wasn't so large like now. That's all.
While I agree gravel needed a retexture, I hoped it would at least stayed away from gray, as it's used in so many different blocks. For gray we got: smoothstone, cobblestone & stonebricks (+their variants) While it gave a good variety to play with, adding another grey texture to an object, it doesn't add alot due to the choices we already had. Keeping gravel with a rare/unique colorpalet would have served a better purpose. (It's original pinkish color made it easy recognizable form a distance, it also made a good way to mark things due to it's easy recognizability)
I mainly used the old gravel as walkways next to less fancy roads, or as less travelled roads. While this is still possible as it's only a retexture, it'll be less easely recognized from cobble/stone from a distance.
Will this retexture change teh way i play? doubt it, it's just a minor annoyance amongst alot of great goodies. Can't have perfection & can't please all so I accept it.
Kinda agree. I can't difference Cobble and new Gravel xD. And yes, gray like have another "soft" stone.
Of course they should look similar. xD
What I always wondered was why they had gravel looking like pinkish static instead of small, grey rocks.
Yep, is stone, but with different sizes.
Gravel is smaller, is the name to a group of small rocks. They are on beaches, roads, underground, sand, hills, etc.
The Cobblestone is processed stone (yes, is weird that is easily obtainable by simply mining stone), bigger rocks.
The gravel's rocks (specially on beaches, sand and hills) are more variated, with different colors: black, white, blue, orange, purple, greenish, etc. I think that they took the blue and purple ones
My opinion, but, when I look a gravel road in Minecraft with old texture, it looks like a real road, not like now :S
I see what you mean about it though too grey...
