This is a video of the newest snapshot 12w26a and I did a test after my friend told me you can achieve the maximum level for enchanting (30) after smelting 13 full stacks of something. I used cobblestone and made it stone in this video but I'm sure it would work with anything.
Watch the video here and leave your comments on this thread to what you think.
Not lower the amount as a whole but make it relative to the item mined or smelted would be pretty good. Coal would but lowest and diamond would give a nice boost, while the elusive emerald could give a random amount.

Don't play vanilla? You don't know **** about minecraft.
Here we go again with the "Minecraft is too easy" thing...
We are actualy on a snapshot state, and for i saw (not sure) 1.3 is going to be released in a month or so... Theres a lot of time ahead to do some tweaking.
For smelting youll need fuel, which you need to mine and you need something to smelt or cook: iron, sand, cobble, wood... its not like Poof ! i have coal and poof! i have sht tons of stuff to smelt... Its a process...
Plus, now books are way harder to craft than it used to be before the addition of leather to the crafting recipe.
Again we are in snapshot states, so theres plenty of time to tweak it or change it.

Have you ever played minecraft? It is extremely easy, and this 1.3 update is making it easier... You start off and you are level 30 (the highest enchanting level) in about 5 minutes of playing a world... You say books are way harder to craft, you need one piece of leather per book, t's not hard to get leather, make a cow farm and boom you have leather for days...
i think levels are fine as is staying at 50 max with the current scaling system, i don't know why they'd change it in the first place.

I play and build in survival using the xp i get on my tools and armour..... and i am constantly srunning out of xp to use on my equipment. Maybe people should start to really play survival... and not just build xp farms and xp would never be to much.
i like it now, i would even take it back to the w24 state where you needed the same ammount for each level. now i actually use enchantments, although it is a big job getting all the bookshelves.
Define for me "Real Minecraft" As Minecraft is a Sandbox game and Will always be a Sandbox game. It is your Choice to play on that Version of minecraft or not. They are not Forcing you to play anything, As you are Choosing to play it yourself.
Yes things are getting too easy, but what do you think a Snapshot is for? Testing. That is why they are Releasing the snapshots to test what people's Reactions will be for the upcoming 1.3 update.
Minecraft is a sandbox game, so any argument on it being too easy is irrelevant. the next update will guaranteed to be much better than the current snapshot.
I've noticed we all have different opinions, and I'm just saying you need 15 bookshelfs to get a level 30 enchantment. You need 3 books per bookshelf so 45 books in total, that is only 45 pieces of leather. If you are still struggling to find 45 pieces of leather then go to an npc village and steal the librarians books.

I agree it will be better then the current snapshot because it is not coming out for another month, but to me that's good, it will give time for them to tweak everything perfect.
Is great that they have lowered the difficulty to get levels, before the snapshots it was nearly impossible enchant a tool to the maximum, and impossible to do that twice. Now the problem is that is too easy... is cool that they put the smelting-mined experience beacause it helps people that don't fight mobs that often, but i think is a mistake changing the max enchant level to 30, it should stay at 50 or be 40 or so...
Yea, I'm not saying I mind getting all this xp so easy, but it would be nice to see at least it change to 40 then I believe it would be a happy middle.
we need some balance......getting exp for smelting is too OP
a nice way to tweak this could be this
the furnace drop the exp orbs when something is smelted, no when you pick the smelted item from the furnace, so if you wanna collect all the exp from smelting a stack of cobblestone you must stay there until the whole stack is smelted...

I don't think forcing players to waste time to get a reward for smelting is the answer. The furnace takes stacks of ore so that you won't have to stand there. I know the point is that you should have to waste that time to get that XP, but I think it'd be far more simple to just lower the amount of XP you get from more common sources.
If the xp from coal is nerfed or removed that should help considerably to balance things. The other ores are fine, it's hitting coal veins that the vast majority of my xp comes from. Dunno about smelting, haven't paid much attention to the xp that comes from it.

Agreed, after I'm done one trip of mining I am level 30 and if not very close.

That's a good idea actually.

I've made a fairly large cow farm. It costs a lot of wheat, and cows only drop 2 leather at the most. I have 10 bookcases.
However, since I only need 15 bookcases, I guess it is a bit easier.
