I am having this issue. I am on a Mac. Perhaps that is where we are having the concern?
[edit] Located the issue. If you have a Mac, be sure to delete minecraft.zip (original install) from the main folder after replacing minecraft.jar in the bin. For whatever reason it will read the .zip before the .jar

Coal is inefficient. I only use Propane and Propane Accessories.
I hate when people hate on Macs. I have a Mac, it's not even a new model, and it works great. The only problems I've ever had are not being able to get mods (Which is mainly only my fault) and this glitch. Some of my friends with PCs have worse game quality than me. So you can't just hate on macs because they're not specifically for gaming. I can play high quality computer games with no lag and good graphics on my Mac laptop.
So yeah, this glitch is because we're on macs, but we still deserve help to fix this.

Even Apple admits that their products are geared for the non-computer people. Look at their latest advertisements:
Moronic Person: Oh no! I don't know how to make a document!
Guy in Blue Shirt: Wait! I'm an Apple Genius! I can help!
(some time passes)
Genius: Now change the font to Comic Sans and add some stock clip art.
Person: Wow! A professional document just like that! Thank you Apple Genius!
The biggest issue with Macs is that they may as well be epoxied shut. Can you upgrade? No. Can you run a program the Apple hasn't expressly approved? No. Let me tell you what my PC can do...
My PC was hand-built by me, with an overclocked AMD Phenom 965 Black Edition CPU stable at 4.2GHz.
It had 4GB or RAM when built, but I recently upped that to 16GB.
It is rolling a pair of older AMD Radeon HD 5770's in CrossfieX config overclocked to mach the benchmarks of the latest GPUs.
I recently added a 2TB secondary mechanical drive, alongside my 1.5TB boot drive.
I am triple-booting Windows 7, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux, and I sometimes run Mac OSX in a virtual machine for testing purposes. Note that my PC is able to smoothly run Windows AND Mac OSX at the same time. A Mac cannot do that.
Lastly, my computer runs dozens of open-source software packages that let me do just about anything.
Now what can your Mac do? Facetime? I got Skype. iTunes? I got that on Windows. Minecraft? Java is native to Windows, and is the most optimized for Windows. Also, OpenGL support is severely lacking under Mac OSX making for a severe performance hit.
I don't hate on Mac. I just know from experience of fixing people's Macs (I'm they guy you call when Apple's "Geniuses" say it can't be fixed and you need a new one) that the PC is just a far superior platform.
...for many people. Digital artists and people who do nothing but browse the web are perfectly suited for using Mac. That said, many of the best digital art suites don't even run on Macs...
Lastly, I once witnessed as a Mac running OSX was benchmarked for CPU, RAM, and graphic performance. That exact same Mac was then reformatted and given an install of Windows. Those same benchmarks were run again. Guess what? The benchmarks were higher, thanks to doing what Apple's "Geniuses" will say is impossible. I did, however, get an Apple Store employee to admit that iOS deliberately shrinks the storage capacity of your iDevice over time. I'm wondering if some of them know more than they are letting on, and only pretend not to know the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit.

This is what happens when you try gaming on a $2,000 Facebook machine. :/
