For moving the villagers, I have nothing to add that isn't already said. The main reason I checked is because I'm going to try to do some iron golem farming in 1.8 (snapshot 14w02c now, official release when it comes), and villager breeding doesn't work the same in that (nor does village detection, but villagers are my main issue), and so I was seeing what options there were.
This mention of 1.8 snapshot and portals, though... I will have to look into that.
However, I figure I may as well weigh in on the "legit world" discussion. My take is this: as long as its single-player or a multi-player server that you run, it's all up to you. Personally, as much as I try to keep survival worlds legitimate, there are times that, for time's sake, I will "cheat". I don't personally call it cheating, just using the resources the game gave me, but I do it sometimes. Doing a superflat survival game, I used creative to spawn a donkey after going village to village for hours trading, running out of inventory space, and never once finding a herd of horses (despite finding several on previous superflat survival attempts). When it comes down to it, if you own the world or survival, it's all up to you. I don't hate people who resolutely refuse to "cheat" to solve a problem. I certainly get annoyed sometimes when they look for help solving these issues, mostly because they often whine about the time-consumption of a legitimate solution and about how they want to keep their world "legit". This thread isn't so annoying, but be careful with how you come across. And sometimes, the legitimacy isn't at all satisfying. For example, I needed a donkey and had spent several tedious hours searching to no avail, so it was a relief to simply use a spawn egg than to keep going. I understand that a lot of people find more enjoyment in laying legitimately, but don't assume that everyone finds the same satisfaction in the same way.
And above all, understand I don't intend to change your mind or how you play Minecraft. I cannot stress enough how important it is to realize that it's different for person, and each person is entitled to do whatever the hell they want in each world, whether that be play a completely legitimate and tediously time-consuming game or a build hugeass stuff in a carefree creative game. I just ask you have the same consideration.
This thread is from almost two years ago -- they were referring to the 1.4 snapshot, which allowed mobs to travel through portals.

Still, I'm always surprised at people seemingly constantly confusing "legit actions - as a player" and "need to use tools - as an admin".
Restoring a spawn area village clearly falls into the "repair" type of work. If a griefer ruined the players-and-admins-made spawn big city (welcome new players area, public farms, caste, church, lots of houses, etc.) with fire and TNT, I'm quite sure that this "must... be... legit !" guy wouldn't tell the community "well, the griefer did it legit with items he crafted himself, so let's not restore from yesterday's backup, instead let's just rebuild from scratch !".Duh.
Self-imposed challenges are one thing. Admin work is another.
