wat. I don't get why occasionally you'll see somebody refer to the mountains/mountain biome as "extreme hills". That's like referring to an ocean as an "extreme pond" or a ravine as an "extreme ditch"
I believe its because of this tool called amidst that shows you a generated world with all the biomes npc villages and stronghold locations. In there its called extreme hills.
Might not be just that one tool, could be others refer to it aswell. Its just that i noticed it from there
Biome type is shown in the F3 menu now. I'm pretty sure one of the biomes is named "extreme hills".
I noticed this too. The creepers seem to notice you less quickly. But what Tomi said makes sense. Maybe they really have to SEE you before they attack you.
But they definitely got scarier with the new AI. I've already been blown up by creepers a couple of times, because they actually seem to try to attack you from behind.
Last night I saw how the Creepers have improved. I was exploring a cave and happened to see two of them in a section of cave slightly below me, but with no direct path to me. Before, they would have just came running up to me and spent the next 30 years of life hoping up against the side of the cave that they couldn't climb to get to me. In this case though they did something different.
Instead of coming right for me, they turned around and headed for another section of cave that I knew wrapped around a wall and would have led to me. Instantly I knew that they knew how to get to me, and sure enough there they were making their way down a side corridor that led to me.
While they might not notice you as easily, if they do see you, they have a much improved path finding ability that looks for ways to find paths to get to the player better. A whole lot scarier now knowing that if they see you, they are essentially guided missiles looking for you.
i think its the new AI of them, i seen a video of one and it accually had a creeper well, Creeping on the guy (it was a snapshot preview not a funny video thing.)
although creepers are not very scary......unless if you are using MAtmos, and they pop out of a dark corner, that literally will make you jump out of your skin. But, creepers are certainly not stupider, the AI has been improved greatly, and is less derpy than "CHARGE, THEN STRAFE!" you actually will have creepers stalking you for a while and you won't notice. I think jeb tweaked the spawn code of creepers too, without mentioning it. I seriosuly have not found a single creeper, by itself, they always attack in packs. Another funny thing that j happened was that a couple of creepers got stuck in a hole, somehow, and then they all started spinning. I literally lol'd
That was what I forgot to post. The creepers I was checking out were spinning a lot. I've never seem that before, and that just struck me as glitched code and not intelligent code
I was heading down into a ravine via a staircase I made and saw a Creeper on the other side. I thought, "He'll just try to walk right towards me and fall down to his death." To my amazement he actually walked around the side of the ravine. Suddenly realizing my mistake I made my way back up the stairs just in time to see him drop to the spot where I had been standing only moments before and explode. He took out a good chunk of blocks near the ravine surface and part of the staircase.
"Welcome to 1.2", I thought. The nightmare of intelligent creepers has become our new reality.

Oh god, I just checked it and you're right. If you hit F3 it actually calls the Mountain biomes "extreme hills"
That is the most retarded crap I've ever seen in Minecraft.

Well technically each block is 1 meter cubed or 3 feet cubed, so the max generation height is only about 110 high, or around 50+ over sea level. So the height of those hills is only like 150 feet high.
While not stumbling into pits is generally a good thing, I think Creepers should be a bit more reckless. Recently, I was in a village, walked out in the morning, and noticed a Creeper up on a roof, which clearly saw me but refused to jump down because the fall was 3-4 blocks. Even when I started jumping up and hitting it, it didn't jump down at me, and I was able to easily kill it.
Since Creepers are going to explode anyway, they should jump down unsafe amounts if:
1) It will put them in close range of the player.
2) They have enough health to survive the fall.
Zombies likewise, although in their case I would change it to "They have enough health to survive the fall and still be at 50%+"
Also/alternately, for the smarter mobs (Creepers, Golems, Pigmen, maybe Spiders), if they're being attacked and have no path to the player, they should try to retreat instead. It wouldn't always help, but it's better than standing there and getting smacked to death with a loaf of bread.
You're just ****ing with semantics, there's no difference between an "extreme" hill and a mountain. By calling it "extreme" you're just saying it's an order of magnitude larger than a regular hill, and the game already has hills, but we already have a word for something that's an order of magnitude larger than a regular hill - A MOUNTAIN.
They're exactly the same thing. It's like calling an ocean an "extreme pond" or a desert next to water an "extreme beach".

Son, YOU are the one playing "semantics" by even making a big deal of this to begin with,.
YOU are the one with panties in a bunch over the term "extreme hills". No one else gives a ****.
But you are making a huge stink over it, based on your opinion of the misuse of the terms at hands. Hence, semantics.
Nope, they're smarter.
Now, they can actually creep up on me without me seeing them, and they're blowing up my music disc trap whenever they're hit by the skeleton arrow (they never did that before 1.2).
There's a noticeable (and welcome) change immediately in the AI. They seem to not just "see" you within the range for one thing. Plus, two creepers started after me in a cave. I killed the one and while there was nothing preventing the other one from advancing(only a few blocks away) - he stopped as if noting the danger of proceeding ahead. Watching me and I swear, he even glanced over when his buddy died. Eventually, he DID come after me when I provoked him, but not before...
I've noticed that creepers seem to be more careful about blowing up other creepers. I had 4 creepers after me and they spread out and two attacked from the front and the others attacked from the back, only one creeper was killed in the blast from another. Before 1.2, creepers would just kill each other without even trying not to. Another thing is that the range that they will light their fuse at is changed, before it was about 4-6 blocks horizontally away from you, and 3-4 blocks vertically, but now they will light their fuse about 2-3 blocks horizontally, and 1 block vertically. They will make sure to damage you no matter what. Either it's part of their AI or it's a bug but you can stand on a 2 block high pillar and the creepers won't light their fuses.
unfortunately, the new AI also makes it so you no longer need a roof, just tall walls. this significantly reduces the risk of the classic "****, mobs are going to fall on my head"
Were you playing on a friends server or a more far away server when this happened bacon? Its possible it was just latency.
EDIT: Lol epicness, they should make it so creepers act more like real tnt. one explodes near the others, the others are ignited. I can see the casual babies whining now. xD
Mobs being stupid sometimes and clever other times would be even better, hell why not give them varying intellegence levels!? One gung ho ninja creeper and his derpy, clumsy brother
That is actually a very good idea - different types of creepers, ranging from complete idiots who don't know how to jump to the Ninja-Einstein Creeper.

And pedantic. You are being quite pedantic.
