Do we have any idea at all what conditions must be met in order to trigger a zombie siege? There was also some question about spawning behavior when a siege occurs. It seems as though zombies will spawn even in lit areas where they normally would not. We had a couple of threads going about this topic but they were locked with the 1.1 forum.
Does anyone have any insight? I highly doubt that it's simply random, and even if it is there must be some sort of criteria (random, but only if X days have passed since the last siege; only occurs if the player is in a chunk with a villager; only occurs during the full moon, etc).
I've had zombie sieges occur on consecutive nights, which also means they're not lunar events.
I think it's related to the number of villagers. I cut down my number of villagers significantly,
and the zombie sieges stopped happening.
Sounds like it might be some sort of population threshold to keep villages from getting too many villagers, then? What really concerns me is zombies spawning in areas they otherwise would not (fully lit up areas). My house/base/castle is right smack dab in the middle of a village and I don't want zombies spawning in there every other day!
I managed to spawn within sight of a village on my new 1.2 save, and went straight to it. I've had zombie sieges on the first three nights, and now there are only four villagers left, trapped inside a small sand cube I built "for their safety".
Not too far outside the village while cutting down a tree in broad daylight, a zombie attacked me, and wasn't on fire from sunlight.
They spawned for me in places with 100% light, so it sucks.
That really sucks. I was looking forward to zombie sieges before the update so I'd have a reason to protect villages. But if zombies will spawn even in lit areas then there's no point in bothering to try fortify villages since the zombies will just spawn inside the walls anyway.
It's going to really suck having mobs spawn right outside my house at any old time, simply because I'm in a village. And it's going to suck worse having to rebuild doors all the time when I spent hours and hours building a wall specifically to prevent having to do that!

Seriously, though, any updates on this issue? I've never had any sort of "zombie siege".
I have to say I was skeptical that sieges really happened until I had a pack of zombies spawn in a flatworld village that I had carefully modified so that there were no spawnable blocks inside the walls and was carefully lit up to boot. Even slimes didn't spawn in this village. The village had enough population that there were at least 3 golems patroling around.
Without someone looking at the actual code I'm not sure the parameters for sieges can easily be deduced. I think some people attribute zombies spawning naturally to being a siege which clouds the real facts.
Can a Zombie siege happen if the village is underwater? As in you moved a village to below the ocean?
That depends, is it submerged or is there air? Did you make the village yourself or did you cover a village in water?
If its submerged or you made it yourself I'm not entirely sure if they'll spawn when its not at its original location, especially because of the water. I mean...its possible if you made it yourself but zombies wont spawn underwater. They'd just float to the top even if they did.
I put a bunch of villagers in minecarts and sent them to a town I build. They bred because of the wooden doors I had in town so I ended up with a ton of villagers. I had a zombie seige one night, and they all spawned inside a building that was fully lit. Luckily a few days before, an Iron Golem also spawned in here, so he took them out pretty fast.

that's rough.. considering they knock down doors now too.
Is that with the full release of 1.2? Or one of the snapshots?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Ok, that's what I thought.
