i play version 1.16.4 on pc and xbox 1. i would like to get version 1,17 to learn. i play survival hard mode but don't go into the ether yet. thanks, chas

Well, if society collapses next month, you're going to have a lot more to worry about than playing the newest version of Minecraft....😉
There is many 1.17 feature mods for 1.12.2, 1.15.2 & 1.16.3 already if you want to try some out (2 for Caves and Cliffs blocks, 1 for Axolotls, 1 for the Sculk Sensor and more will probably appear over time or those mods will be updated).
I've reviewed a few of them if you want to check them out here are the videos on them (the link to the mods are in the descriptions).
But no snapshots/pre-releases/release candiates until 1.16.4 is done (which only has a pre-release so far) and the update itself is coming out next year so we might see snapshots around December/January I think.

There is no pre-release/snapshot of 1.17 out yet - release is mid 2021 - maybe early 2021 there will be some snapshots
