With bonemeal and either twisting or weeping vines you can make ladders either up or down to areas you want to get to. These blocks just became one of the most useful blocks in the game because of this.
These changes are good. It made that nether is a bit less "hellish" and more looks like something from the Journey to the Center of the Earth. Why don't you replace the name of the soul sand and soul soil to the something diffrent? In my opinion It would be better for this new update. Tier better than diamonds will completly change the game, but Mojang does that every version and that works goodly (makes popularity). Try not to add magical-themed stuff
I’m hoping to make a really cool and useful nether base now. Epically with the spawn points and compass editions.
I think the 1.16 snapshots are great, the only problem is that I think they are adding too many updates at the same time, they should leave some for later.

It's getting hard to digest everything they are adding. I think they should stop a little and let everybody breathe and enjoy the new changes for a bit. After some time they should go back to adding heavy updates. Think of it, some of the greatest updates ever in less than one year: 1.13, 1.14, 1.15, and now, 1.16 which is, in my opinion, bigger than the previous ones.

I don't see much issue with this personally, but you do you.
To people reporting crying obsidian in ruined portals as a glitch: consider that maybe it is the 'decayed' version of obsidian and that's why it shows up in ruined portals despite not being sufficient for portals.
With this snapshot, I do believe that we have every feature promised at Minecon, along with a bunch extra! So I predict we'll move to pre-releases next week or the one after.
It'll be interesting to see what the next update will be. Now that we have the groundwork laid for biomes that vary with height, we might see some interesting stuff done with caves for the first time in eons!
Alternatively, perhaps the End will get some love comparable to the Nether. And of course we're owed a bunch of Overworld biome enhancements.

I think there may still be a biome or two in the works but yeah I am super satisfied with this update, even if as jtaman2005 points out, some of the stuff doesn't feel super in spirit with the game, the overdesign of piglins in particular - real pigs in the game don't have ears but they do?
I'm loving the Nether update so far. The Nether has become a place I'm excited to explore and interact with, rather than just a place I use for fast travel and blazes/wither skellys. The new music is one of my favourite parts; it does't really sound like anything done in the past for Minecraft, but that's okay. It gives the Nether and the biomes a lot of personality. I really, really like the idea of biome specific music and hope it sticks around for more.
I'm thinking they could do something to make the two new forests stand out more. I understand there are differences, like Enderman in the Warped and the Piglins in the Crimson, but for the most part they seem like a red and blue hell forest. I like them both a lot, though. Maybe add a unique structure to each?
Am I the only one thinking that ruined portals were built by piglin to escape the overworld because iron golems and villagers were afraid of their gold obsession and possessiveness?
I have explored a dozen of the Bastions to date in 20W16A, and none have a treasure room. Are these not generating yet?
If someone has a seed and a location or two, where they have seen them, I would greatly appreciate seeing them!
You've probably just been unlucky. They don't have proper 'treasure' rooms. Some larger rooms have single or double chests, a solitary block of gold, or some gilded blackstone on the walls. It's not easy to tell where they are.
I am in love with the nether update so far. Last 2-3 snapshots have just continually raised the bar and I keep thinking.. I can't wait to see what is next.. but how can they top it.. then new biome.... new blocks... bastions.. etc Mojang is nailing this update. I even like the idea of ruined portals in both worlds.

If they're native to the Overworld, why do they zombify when going there?
Though it's definitely odd that living piglins are vulnerable to fire but zombie ones aren't.

Though it's definitely odd that living piglins are vulnerable to fire but zombie ones aren't.
They're not native to the Overworld, explaining why there are more portals in the Overworld than the Nether - they closed off and dismantled ones on their end to keep people from going across and getting zombified, but the ones at the far end could not do so in time and thus became zombified. Zoglins also don't burn in fire while hoglins do so maybe it's part of being an undead creature from the Nether.
Alternatively, piglins and hoglins used to live in the Overworld but moved to the Nether for some reason, e.g. hostility with villagers who they were only trying to trade with, because piglins become violent if you steal their stuff or don't wear gold armor, and golems also attack piglins without provocation (perhaps because of the former reason). This would also explain why zoglins are unconditionally hostile - they feel villagers have betrayed them and that piglins did not do a good job keeping them safe in either dimension, seeing as they somehow got through a portal despite being scared of portals - and thus are hostile to both groups.
As a result of staying in the Nether for so long, they changed and became Nether-y so the Overworld is toxic to them, literally. Or, it's metaphorically toxic due to villages, which are otherwise mostly friendly and passive, being hostile to them because of their gold obsession and possessiveness.
Or, perhaps being in the Nether for so long and away from the Overworld made them effectively a dead race in the Overworld, and the game actualizes this by having them become dead if they try to return to the Overworld to symbolize they no longer exist as living species there, in a Silent-Hill-esque manner. Minecraft often gives hints and vibes that the world itself is alive and can pass judgment like that.
Hoglins too, I assume piglins used to have better relations with them as equals or near equals, or they used to be more peaceable cattle. It's kind of odd how they live together in red forests and bastions right now, almost like indecisive enemies with uncertain truces, kind of like humans living with chimpanzees.
I wonder how living piglins/hoglins would interact with illagers if they were to meet while both not zombified.
I'm really loving this update so far and I'll go over what I like and what I don't like(Which is only a little bit).
The New Biomes
The Warp Forest: I like the blue-ish atmosphere of this biome. Although this biome is a bit bloated with Enderman and I think the biome could use at least one more mob that is a food source. I also don't like how the warp wart block doesn't degrade and I think they should.
The Crimson Forest: Like the warped forest I really like the red-ish atmosphere of this biome. I don't really have much problem with biome, aside from the fact that the wart block doesn't degrade.
The Soul Sand Valley: Again, I like the atmosphere. However, the Ghast spawns way too frequently in this biome and made it a bit difficult to strive in this biome, the high spawn rate of the skeleton is IMO already enough.
The Basalt Delta: By far my favorite biome in the nether. I love the ash atmosphere that the biome gives. I also really like the general structure of this biome, gives me volcanic remnants vibes.
The New Mobs
Piglins: I really adore them and I think they have tons of personality base on sounds alone. The bartering system made gold a lot more useful.
Hoglins: I think this mob serves the purpose of being the food source of the nether quite well. I also quite like they're relationship with the piglins.
Strider: IMO, these guys are the MVP! They're ugly in a charming way and that's all I could ever ask for. I really like how they can be used as a nether boat, Mojang seems to take a popular suggestion and do their own twist on it. I have one problem with these guys and that is I wish there is a way to regain the saddle without killing them.
Zoglin: Clearly just here for continuity's sake with the piglins turning into zombified piglins. Not much to say about these guys.
Misc
The new soundtrack: I really love them and I think they fit in the game quite nicely. The soundtrack gives me the vibes of something had happened in this place and maybe someday the player might uncover(MatPat is going have a blast making theory about the nether). Pigstep is pretty good too and imo surpassed Stal.
Blocks: Not much for me to comment here aside from the fact that I can definitely see myself building with the new blocks. However I think the chain block shouldn't be a 100% solid block, it should be one of those blocks that the player can walk pass through.
Bastion Remnants: I like the structure although a bit hard for me to navigate through and that's probably the point because the structure is supposed to look ruined hence the name Bastion Remnants. I also like the loot that the structure offers.
Ruined Portals: I'm personally ok with the spawn rate of the structure. Not too rare but not too frequent, just about right. Gives the new players an idea that the nether exists and it's up to them to find out how to activate it, without watching a youtube video of course.
Netherrite Sets: Not much for me to comment about them.
Thanks, 'Bases'! I have seen the single chests, single/double pairs, gilded blocks, and the gold blocks, just no sign of a treasure room yet. Still looking, going on 20 locations without luck. I have even used spectator mode to browse around, once the blocks have generated.

Praise be to Spode.

I don't like the new music disc. It does not sound like anything from Minecraft at all, same for some of the new mobs/structures/textures/items. Gah!

Nether bastions are great. I feel like next snapshot might be a Nether fortress update given the new Nether brick types.

The game is definitely doing well at making tutorials for things, but I wish there were still better hints for how to tame/friend animals.
