Except they only drop some puny seagrass when you kill them.
You have to keep them alive and let them grow into adults in order for them to give you the materials needed for that helmet.
A missed chance to give shears a new use...

Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move
I have a hunch this might be that one ocean mob from the Minecon Earth voting. I certainly hope it is.
You might be right. They might have been so confident that people would have voted for the ocean mob that they didn't worry about the fact that they said they would never add the other 3 mobs.
Oh my goodness that logic for not adding sharks... It makes me want to die inside. For reasons already stated in this thread it's really dumb. I honestly think sharks might be a pretty good option for a hostile underwater mob, as there's quite a few things you could do with them, (for example, maybe large packs of sharks might be attracted to battles in the ocean?). But so long as some decent ocean-wide hostile mob is added (or multiple mobs), I'm happy. As it is right now though, oceans might be pretty, but they're slightly boring gameplay-wise. I guess we'll just have to see what future snapshots bring...
Yeah, how are shears going to cut through a hard shell?
Weren't those Scutes?

It dawned on me today how stupid this whole thing is. Mojang appears to be hiding under "animal cruelty" instead of just saying something won't be added because they don't want to add it. This is Mojang's game, and they are allowed to create whatever they want. They decided to create a new mob instead of sharks, and that's fine by me. But they told us the reason was "animal cruelty" and we thought we wouldn't be getting a hostile ocean mob because of it. They could have outright said "there won't be sharks, but we have something similar in mind" and 8 pages of confusion would be gone.

Agreed.
The only possible reason that I can think of for this whole stupid fiasco is if Mojang wanted to get the press to say something like "Oh lookey! Mojang is fighting for animal rights by not adding sharks in their game!" Which is dumb, because the press hates anything to do with video games (or Youtubers).
There is no way that after playing a game where I kill animals that I will be convicted to kill animals, unless I have some kind of mental issue, in which case I shouldn't be playing any video games or watching television at all. And that's not Mojang's problem. There is no way that after playing a game where I go up to animals and ride them that I will be convicted to ride animals either. Do you know how scary-tall a horse is in real life? There's no way I'd stay on that thing for more than a few seconds, much less stay on it while it's moving at several miles per hour! (I'm a kid who sits in his bed with his laptop during his free time so... take that as you will?)
There is a possibility that if I have a cookie and my friend has a parrot, I might be convicted to feed the parrot. I don't know any better, the parrot in the game liked it when I fed it cookies. Okay, this change is reasonable. But in the game I treated the parrot like a friendly creature and upon doing a friendly thing it acted like it was happy. Upon killing a mean shark in the game, the shark acted sad. I was trying to do this because it was hurting me in the first place.
I also approached the shark because this is a game and I have no reason to fear. My life is not at stake here, I'll just respawn. In real life that doesn't happen, and I'm not likely to approach something that I think will try to kill me, unless I'm that kind of person. In which case I'm likely to be equipped and ready for events like interacting with sharks. I'm not just going to find one on a beach and wonder what to do with it.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
Or, again, this entire thread is the result of too many people taking an obvious joke seriously.
You hit the point really hard,we are taking this a bit too seriously when this was meant to be a joke on first place.

Is it though? Do you have sources?
It's not really phrased like a joke in any case...
"Can I brutally murder them instead?"
"Yeah but be prepared for the dolphins pack coming to get you"
This almost sounds more like the kind of response I'd be giving as an 8-year old child obsessed with dolphins that couldn't stand the idea of killing them... At the very least a response like "It's a joke, we're doing it for balance reasons" would be preferable. So just for the record, no, we're not taking an obvious joke seriously, we've possibly wasted our time on a potentially sarcastic response that was badly phrased and never cleared up.
Taking sick ppl into a pool with dolphins sounds like the most stupid idea ever those pools are so full of germs that healthy ppl can get seriously sick.
Another response that is insulting someone's career and doesn't seem sarcastic in the slightest.

UPDATE: I was able to contact Helen Angel on Reddit. She said that she’s not the person who makes these decisions, she just announces them. While this may seem all fine and dandy, just think about it. That means that the decision to not add sharks wasn’t the fault of one person, but probably a group of people, in a conference room, who all agreed to not add sharks because they’re “endangered”, without one person standing up saying anything about this being a bad idea.
I didn't read the whole thread, but the first post is right, that logic is awfully flawed...
It sound like the dumb kind of logic that anti-games use all the time
"Ur ur if player see thing in game, player dumb so they do it in real life too!"
Which is the stupidest logic ever. I think gamers are actually more aware than non-gamers of what is "real" and what isn't...
Also: a game where you get an achiev" for throwing a pig off a cliff and yet is scared to add sharks? Er, yeah, just... stupid move.
I dunno but it sound like Helen is either the unlucky messenger, or the most flawed-logic person at Microsoft-Minecraft, because if I recall right, they were the ones to say that we couldn't ride dolphin because it was animal cruelty...
So sound like they're on a race for the prize of the stupid...
This is a PSA for everyone complaining in this thread.
GO OUTSIDE. FIND A SENSE OF HUMOR. DON'T RETURN UNTIL SUCCESSFUL.
The inability to to recognize the humor in Mojangs response is frightening to say the least, just wow.. Talk about taking things literally overboard.
I'm sorry, but companies aren't allowed to have a sense of humor, or at the very least not an edgy one.
This is a huge, professional company that people look up to. Making this kind of humor and not apologizing or trying to make amends is the kind of thing that gets employees fired in real businesses.
I'm sorry to the people that work in businesses, but I as much as I expect courtesy and respect as a customer of their services, some people nowadays think that literally any kind of humor with the slightest bit of racism, sexism or any other offense will complain. (Remember the "Do you know de wae" meme that you either found hilarious or really annoying? I'm talking about the kind of people that thought this was racist because it "made fun of someone's accent." I agree, these people need a sense of humor.)
Is this a bit over-protective of customers feelings? Maybe, and I would probably agree with you if you also think it's over-protective! But when you step over the line like this, even the non-offended need to ask if this person is taking their job and their responsibility seriously.
Even when you're not an easily-offended person, it hurts to think that someone as important as an employee of the second-most famous video game of all time has said something less-than-pleasant about your job. And the fact that they did it when a customer asked a question about a product and not when dealing with personal business just makes it worse.
TL;DR: Employees have an obligation to be polite to their customers, and be careful with what they say, especially when dealing with business.

Hopefully it's an actual, somewhat threatening free-swimming mob that spawns everywhere in the ocean instead of something dumb like undead pirates...
The Phantoms and turtles are of quality, and I assume the dolphins and fish will also be, so I have high hopes for this thing.
Sea Turtles are endangered and you can kill them in Minecraft now and wear their carcase on your head.

Figured it was time for a change.
Yeah, as long as it's able to swim freely and it isn't humanoid, I'm hyped for it

Not to mention the fact that after someone on her twitter mentioned that he worked for a place that let kids with mental handicaps ride dolphins for therapeutic reasons, she replied:

It's appalling that this person has any sort of say in what gets added and what doesn't.
