Then again, maybe they'll just take a page from current server sleep mechanics. On a server, only a certain number of people have to sleep in order to change to daytime. This could be applied in reverse, sort of, where those who sleep also remove the insomnia affect from everyone else as well (even if they didn't sleep). It would be the first effect of its kind, as previously the only effects you could get from someone else triggering it were command-based or via a limited group mechanic (ie, splash potions).
This would be a really weird mechanic, so I doubt it'll work like this. It would probably be the same on servers; it would count you as sleeping even if you don't skip the night.
I like the changes.
And if the water physics apply on doors and trapdoors, there could be a Redstone setup that allows to turn water on or off and create a complex transport system for items and potentially mobs.
If they are going to add another hostile water mob it would either be some loch ness sea monster or sharks.
Love the Trident idea. But who built it? Mermaids?
Personally, I hope fish will be more common than squids. Having 1 fish mob every 30 squids would suck.
I also hope fish, corals, and kelp will not be something so rare I search for it for hours on end to no avail. This must feel like (but not actually necessarily be) everywhere in the ocean.
Something I would love to see is Villagers having more variation depending on the biome they spawn in. With some of them that can only happen through player made villages or spawn eggs.
In Plains and Forests as well as all other biomes with roughly middle European temperature, the current vanilla villagers stay.
In Desert, Mesa, Jungle and other hot biomes, the Villagers have a chocolate brown skin color and have less clothing.
In cold biomes, like snow, tundra, ice spikes, they would have hoods made out of fur and be a bit paler.
In Ocean Biomes, River Biomes, Lake Biomes and all the other biomes that are just water, they have blue skin, black eyes and a blue fish tail instead of legs. They would also breathe underwater and dive by default.
In the Nether, they would have red skin, yellow eyes and horns as well as be fireproof
In the End, they would have purple eyes black endermenskin and purple particles around them.
Wether or not this will be a thing, Villages, Villagers and Farming needs an Update too.
But that is really off topic. You can ignore that.
Glad the Ocean is taken care of, as it is one of my biggest complaints about Minecraft.

I really hope that they make Elder Guardians drop tridents, as they currently just drop a single sponge (which is nothing if the monument has a sponge room) and that isn't the most useful thing. Maybe they'd make it so that the Elder Guardians only have a 1/3 chance of dropping the trident so that you only get one per monument. Anyway, I think making the Ocean Monuments more crucial and important would be a good change. It would both give more reasons to conquer it and more reward for doing so.
I'm really surprised and excited for a new Ocean / Aquatic update. I, along with many others expected this a few years back in (what was it, 1.7?) But I'm definitely hopeful that this will turn out well.
Now I'm honestly feeling quite nostalgic; I love the old minecraft, really anything before 1.4 and especially 1.7. I do like simplicity, but I also think that if they added a lot more things to Minecraft, it might be more enjoyable to play. But that's just my opinion. I'm personally waiting longer to play a ny survival, maybe until a few more updates.
New info from the costume contest winner's questions to Jeb (seen from a recap video from Xisumavoid):
1)The offhand slot is being changed to only be used for shields, maps, compasses, and similar items that can have an offhand application. Placing blocks/torches, mining, attacking, eating, and the rest are being removed
2)blocking with a shield will require sneaking or backing up which I've heard is how they do it in Bedrock. The slot can still be used for storage, however.
3)Mojang knows about the fix for ghost blocks, so apparently they're being fixed. (all Jeb said in response to this question was that they knew about it and are always fixing bugs...)
4)shipwrecks will have loot chests. No word yet on what's on the menu for these in particular, or if loot chests will appear elsewhere in the 1.14 update
5)coral block textures are (technically, already were) redone. The ones shown at Minecon Earth were old textures.
There were also some general Q&A questions from Minecon Earth that are not necessarily related to 1.14:
1)q: will the new textures be released with 1.13/1.14? A: the recently-announced redone textures are being bundled into a standalone resource pack that will be distributed by Mojang when they're ready. Speculation: Currently they will not be released for 1.13 or 1.14 (not ready yet), I'm not sure if this means they'll come after or not.
2)q: will there be underground biomes/updates to the underground? A:the worldgen code has been getting modified for a long while to make it easier to add in more biomes and stuff (this is relevant to 1.14 specifically as already revealed, but in a larger sense covers a whole lot more). This was in response to a direct question pertaining to the underground and future updates related to that. Speculation: sounds like the next several updates will be themed similarly to 1.14, likely following the choice outlines from the Minecon Earth mob poll (not necessarily in any particular order). The user-choice poll could be a recurring theme for this, potentially offering second chances to the three "gone forever" mobs depending on the reception of Mob A when released.
3)q: where do endermites come from? A:regarding the "history" of The End in terms of development, the initial design called for a separate dimension that endermen used as a teleportation gateway (and Ender Hub?) to the other planes of existence. This dimension was where the endermites were coming from (apparently endermites are Minecraft's version of Star Trek tribbles). Fascinating bit of discarded lore, given that development has obviously gone in a different direction. dinnerbone did not flatly rule out it coming to Minecraft sometime in the future, but did say there was a very low likelihood of it happening.
4)no new boss anytime soon. Obviously a very open-ended answer, since there's no direct refusal to add them.
5)no controller support for Java, it would require extensive redesign of the UI and stuff. They COULD do it, they just feel that it would take too long and impact other things too much to spend the time getting it done.
6)new slabs are coming (no specifics on what materials or timeframe). Vertical slabs are now possible, but Mojang doesn't feel like they fit the Minecraft theme. They are not refusing to implement them so much as putting them off for a rainy day when they have nothing more interesting to work on.
7)bugfixing, specifically the detailed and organized work of mojira-based efforts that explain what the problem is and how to fix it, generally are more helpful to pointing Mojang in the right direction but generally don't actually focus on what the real bug is. This is typical of all programming, as bug results generally don't happen immediately where the problem actually is. Keep doing what you're doing, though, because shortcuts to the endzone are a good thing.
Looks great! Dare I say, it would fit well in the End. ...Actually, it does the more and more you think about it. Really makes me wonder if and how the obligatory mods featuring the trashed 3 other mobs will make extra use of them.

After I first joined back in 1.2.5's very first days, I held hope that I'd see the fish mob appear in the next update. Heh... Glad to see it's going to be in the game at all, even though I haven't actively played MC in probably over a year now.
You aren't the only one to feel nostalgic. Minecraft has definitely changed over the years; for better or worse. I've been playing this game for a long time, and sadly I can't really say that I think I'll ever get back into it anywhere even remotely as much as I was.
Here are my thoughts on each of the announced new features:
Water bubbles - Okay yeah sure, they look nice I guess. Don't really care one way or the other about them.
Tridents - Finally a new weapon! Everyone was getting tired of swords and bows anyways. Sounds like it's gonna be a good one. The Loyalty enchantment will make it come back after throwing, looks like it's going to be a must-have enchantment like Infinity and Fortune are. The Impaler enchantment looks like it'll pierce armor, or maybe it's like Sharpness? Slipstream Dash might make you go with the trident when you throw it, I don't know.
Kelp - It looks really cool with the animated texture. What else can I really say? It makes the ocean look livelier.
Coral - Coral? Neat. Like I said before, it makes the ocean look livelier. Could it be used for something? Maybe. What I do know is that it could make a cool aquarium!
Fish - Oh, actual fish swimming in water that isn't just a fishing thing! I can't really be trusted with opinions because I joined in 1.7.10, but fish mobs, the thing that Notch wasn't able to make in time for the update. You can scoop and drop it using a bucket, I can't wait to see the awesome aquariums people will make!
Water Physics - Oh boy is this one controversial. Millions of maps and mechanisms will break because of this. However, I have to say it makes it look better without the ugly gap with a fence and other things like signs I'm guessing? But this is gonna be a really good feature.
Shipwrecks - We don't know enough about them that I can't really comment on them. What is their use? I'm hoping it's gonna have a trident in it like elytras.
Dolphins - Dolphins, hooray! They look really cool with their jumping! Will they be hostile or passive? We have yet to know. But i'm getting a pet dolphin, that's what I know!
Icebergs - They're pretty cool I guess. Yeah.
Mob B - Mob B sounds cool, that's what I wanted to vote for! I guess Mob A could have been a better choice and would have won had we knew 1.14 was an ocean update, but it's still cool. You could say that it's gonna ruin a bunch of SMP servers however (because nobody sleeps)
Overall, glad to see that instead of just adding more blocks, they're putting life into old and overlooked features! I hope they're doing this with the underground (underground biomes) they did say they were modifying the world gen to get underground biomes to work.
The fact that we are getting lots of slabs in regards to coral really makes me think that we'll be seeing lots of new stairs and slabs coming soon. Here's for hoping for cement slabs/stairs!

Water physics is something they may want to question, so they don’t have to work so hard on the water, and focus on the content besides the water itself, like fish, coral, kelp, dolphins..
Besides, if they do pull off the water thing, then I wouldn’t be surprised at all. They did show it.
Personally, I don't care about that.
I don't use the offhand that much. I used it maybe once or twice. I won't miss it.
